As mentioned earlier, the high concentrations may prove toxic, as also, depletion in the concentration of the essential trace elements may cause various metabolic instabilities due to enzyme dysfunction. In the era of rapid industrialization and technological advances, it is imperative to watch keenly for contamination of the environment and its vital composition from heavy metal wastes emanating out of industries. Many metabolic disorders in man are accompanied by alterations in the concentration of one or more trace elements in some body fluid, especially blood serum or plasma It is thus important to update ourselves with various techniques available for such determinations, their operational aspects, advantages / disadvantages etc. More recently, element analysis from hair and nail has been stated as the best indices of such contamination and has also been discussed in this article

    Trace element nutrition in the tropical zebu cattle type : lessons from the Gilgel Gibe catchment, Ethiopia

    In the tropics, cattle are majorly dependent on natural pastures growing on poor soils and as a result prone to trace element deficiencies. This work investigated several aspects of trace element nutrition in zebu (Bos indicus) cattle, the most widely used cattle type in the tropics. Through several trials conducted at the Gilgel Gibe catchment, Ethiopia, we aimed to study factors influencing the flow of trace elements from soil to plant and grazing zebu cattle, and to investigate the impact of trace element status on health, production and trace elements in animal products. Overall, trace element, e.g., Cu, deficiencies were widely prevalent. Environment and certain grazing strategies were intimately related and affected trace element supply whereas cattle type affected trace element status. The effect of trace element status on trace elements in animal products was obvious, whereas the impact on health and production was less clear-cut.     Movement of Trace Elements During Residence in the Antarctic Ice: a Laboratory Simulation

    Recent work has determined that differences in the trace element distribution between Antarctic eucrites and non-Antarctic eucrites may be due to weathering during residence in the ice, and samples that demonstrate trace element disturbances do not necessarily correspond to eucrites that appear badly weathered to the naked eye. This study constitutes a preliminary test of the idea that long-term residence in the ice is the cause of the trace element disturbances observed in the eucrites. Samples of a non-Antarctic eucrite were leached in water at room temperature conditions. Liquid samples were analyzed for rare earth element abundances using ion chromatography. The results for the short-term study showed little or no evidence that leaching had occurred. However, there were tantalizing hints that something may be happening. The residual solid samples are currently being analyzed for the unleached trace metals using instrumental neutron activation analysis and should show evidence of disturbance if the chromatography clues were real. In addition, another set of samples continues to be intermittently sampled for later analysis. The results should give us information about the movement of trace elements under our conditions and allow us to make some tentative extrapolations to what we observe in actual Antarctic eucrite samples

    Analysis of a high order Trace Finite Element Method for PDEs on level set surfaces

    We present a new high order finite element method for the discretization of partial differential equations on stationary smooth surfaces which are implicitly described as the zero level of a level set function. The discretization is based on a trace finite element technique. The higher discretization accuracy is obtained by using an isoparametric mapping of the volume mesh, based on the level set function, as introduced in [C. Lehrenfeld, \emph{High order unfitted finite element methods on level set domains using isoparametric mappings}, Comp. Meth. Appl. Mech. Engrg. 2016]. The resulting trace finite element method is easy to implement. We present an error analysis of this method and derive optimal order H1(Γ)H^1(\Gamma)-norm error bounds. A second topic of this paper is a unified analysis of several stabilization methods for trace finite element methods. Only a stabilization method which is based on adding an anisotropic diffusion in the volume mesh is able to control the condition number of the stiffness matrix also for the case of higher order discretizations. Results of numerical experiments are included which confirm the theoretical findings on optimal order discretization errors and uniformly bounded condition numbers.Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl

    Stein's Method and Characters of Compact Lie Groups

    Stein's method is used to study the trace of a random element from a compact Lie group or symmetric space. Central limit theorems are proved using very little information: character values on a single element and the decomposition of the square of the trace into irreducible components. This is illustrated for Lie groups of classical type and Dyson's circular ensembles. The approach in this paper will be useful for the study of higher dimensional characters, where normal approximations need not hold.Comment: 22 pages; same results, but more efficient exposition in Section 3.

    Trace Finite Element Methods for PDEs on Surfaces

    In this paper we consider a class of unfitted finite element methods for discretization of partial differential equations on surfaces. In this class of methods known as the Trace Finite Element Method (TraceFEM), restrictions or traces of background surface-independent finite element functions are used to approximate the solution of a PDE on a surface. We treat equations on steady and time-dependent (evolving) surfaces. Higher order TraceFEM is explained in detail. We review the error analysis and algebraic properties of the method.     One Spin Trace Formalism for BK B_K

    It has been known for some time that there are two methods to calculate BK B_K with staggered fermions: one is the two spin trace formalism and the other is the one spin trace formalism. Until now, the two spin trace formalism has been exclusively used for weak matrix element calculations with staggered fermions. Here, the one spin trace formalism to calculate BK B_K with staggered fermions is explained. It is shown that the one spin trace operators require additional chiral partner operators in order to keep the continuum chiral behavior.     Bunburra Rockhole: Exploring the geology of a new differentiated asteroid

    Bunburra Rockhole is the first recovered meteorite of the Desert Fireball Network. We expanded a bulk chemical study of the Bunburra Rockhole meteorite to include major, minor and trace element analyses, as well as oxygen and chromium isotopes, in several different pieces of the meteorite. This was to determine the extent of chemical heterogeneity and constrain the origin of the meteorite. Minor and trace element analyses in all pieces are exactly on the basaltic eucrite trend. Major element analyses show a slight deviation from basaltic eucrite compositions, but not in any systematic pattern. New oxygen isotope analyses on 23 pieces of Bunburra Rockhole shows large variation in both δ17O and δ18O, and both are well outside the HED parent body fractionation line. We present the first Cr isotope results of this rock, which are also distinct from HEDs. Detailed computed tomographic scanning and back-scattered electron mapping do not indicate the presence of any other meteoritic contaminant (contamination is also unlikely based on trace element chemistry). We therefore conclude that Bunburra Rockhole represents a sample of a new differentiated asteroid, one that may have more variable oxygen isotopic compositions than 4 Vesta. The fact that Bunburra Rockhole chemistry falls on the eucrite trend perhaps suggests that multiple objects with basaltic crusts accreted in a similar region of the Solar System

    Development of a new plant-based biotest to assess trace element phytoavailability in contamined soils : selection of target-plant species for standardisation

    Concerning the threat of soil contamination, the assessment of trace element phytoavailability at an operational level still requires the identification, the development and the standardisation of a set of biological methods (i.e. biotest). The present abstract introduces the first step in the development of a new plant-based biotest, the RHIZOtest, focused on the selection of the target-plant species suggested for the standardisation of the RHIZOtest. The RHIZOtest is notably based on a complete physical separation between plant and soil compartments enabling an easy, fast and clean recovery of the roots. The RHIZOtest was deployed for ten plant species commonly used in agriculture and on three soils exhibiting a broad range of pH and a high concentration in several trace elements. The measurement of trace element phytoavailability was finally achieved as the mean flux of trace element to the plants during the exposure of the plants to the soil. Seven out of ten plant species exhibited homogenous growth of roots and shoots and consequently can be used adequately in the RHIZOtest experimental procedure. As expected, plant uptake flux of trace elements varied significantly and many-fold among the ten plant species tested. However, trace element phytoavailability also broadly varied among trace elements and soils. Finally, a procedure of ordination and scoring enabled us to select three plant species that maximised trace element phytoavailability according to a precautionary-like principle. This three plant species will be suggested for further standardisation of the RHIZOtest. This study supports the requirement of biological methods that enable to encompass the biological diversity in the assessment of trace element phytovailability whereas chemical methods are not able to take it into account. Such kind of validation procedure for a biotest is the unique opportunity for achieving operational methods based on a hard scientific background that could be standardised for the assessment of trace element phytoavailability.     A black shale protolith for gold-tellurium mineralisation in the Dalradian Supergroup (Neoproterozoic) of Britain and Ireland

    The Dalradian Supergroup of Britain and Ireland is mineralised by gold-tellurium vein deposits. The host succession includes carbonaceous, pyritic shales (pelites) which were a source of trace elements, including gold and tellurium. LA-ICP-MS mapping of pyrite crystals shows that late stages are enriched in gold, tellurium and lead, representing concentration of these elements during metamorphism and related hydrothermal activity. The sulphur isotope composition of the pyrite varies with stratigraphic position, reflecting an origin for the pyrite in the depositional environment through microbial sulphate reduction. Where pyrite was converted to pyrrhotite, trace element contents are much lower, indicating element liberation during metamorphism. These observations are consistent with a model of black shale protoliths for orogenic gold deposits
