Mündü language and culture: the current state of research

    Get PDF
The article outlines the ethnography and the socio-linguistic situation of the Mündü with focus on the sociolinguistic situation and on the endangerment of their language. The Mündü are a little known ethnic group living in several non-contiguous areas in the border triangle of Sudan, DR Congo and Uganda. Data on the history and the culture of the Mündü are scant and scattered in small pieces in the reports of the early European travellers in the region, in ethnographic descriptions of the neighbouring peoples, in particular on the Zande, in ethnographic surveys of Africa and ethnographic handbooks. All pieces of information on the cultural, economic and political situation of the Mündü from the latter second half the 20th century until now are published online on the websites of various organisations. Data on the current situation of the Mündü result partly from my own observations in Arua/Uganda

    Information behaviour in pre-literate societies.

This chapter arose from an exchange of ideas between a former life scientist, a former archaeologist, and a member of the Kope tribe, a remote tribe in Papua New Guinea. All three now work in fields related to information sciences. It discusses how notions of information have been dominated by text-based information sources, and considers how one group of people (the Kope) managed information in the absence of any awareness of text. The study explores how the Kopi relate to information, how they use it, and where they get it from. It summarises the findings as six information roles. These are related to contemporary situations

Social and historical aspects of the assimilation of Christianity in Southeast Asia from 1500-1900 with reference to Thailand and the Philippines

    Get PDF
Though many have attempted to address the complexities of the encounter between Christianity and non-western societies, the literature has not dealt much with Southeast Asia. This article attempts to help fill that gap by examining some of the factors affecting the assimilation of Christianity in Southeast Asia by looking at two countries in detail: Thailand and the Philippines. These two countries offer strikingly different assimilation results. Thailand was not colonized when Christianity was introduced while in the Philippines colonization and Christianity were intimately linked. As a result, both Thailand and the Philippines are a study in contrasts

My manga story proposes a look at Christianity through a critical lens. Christian stories usually pertain to teaching lessons from the Bible. However, the same stories and teachings have also instilled fear and justified harmful ideas against minority groups. I want to take these issues and talk about them through a visual narrative in my thesis project. Ideally, the target audience will be young adults who collect and read dark fantasy manga. My initial chapter of the story, summary of the plot, and character designs with color samples are part of my manga proposal

The research is aimed at having a deep understanding about the dynamic equivalence of Japanese comics (manga) “Garasu no Kamen” translated into the Indonesian language “Topeng Kaca” (The Glass Mask).  This is a qualitative-content analysis research about the dynamic equivalence of translation assessment by using a method of translation assessment that we called “Combined Model” at each unit of translations such as (1) in the unit of semantic and lexical micro-level, which includes mainly  morphemes, words; (2) in the unit of phrases, and different kinds of multi-word expressions; (3) in the unit of syntactic and textual macro-level are being assessed; The text samples from the Manga “Garasu no Kamen” and its translation in Indonesian language “Topeng Kaca” (The Glass Mask) comics series volume no.1,3,6 are quoted in the analysis for each level of dynamic equivalence. The result of the study showed that there is three level of Dynamic Equivalence (D-E), those are D-E Adequate, D-E Less adequate, and D-E misleading. The findings are applicable and will be a valuable reference for translation studies in the country particularly in the level of a university student in order to be able to make a good quality of comics translation from Japanese into the Indonesian language

I Forgot To Remember To Forget

Memory is a nonlinear narrative: pieces of a story that are parceled away in various places in your mind, that come together to tell another larger story. These parcels are made up of moments and events that when combined create a new story and offer new direction. Our original memory can become distorted by perspective. What influences your recollec- tions? Maybe a photograph has influenced how you remember something; maybe you have intentionally or unintentionally altered a story so many times that you now believe the altered version to be a factual account. When we remember a moment or event we remember it in an instant; we do not relive this experience as it happened in real time, it is relived in a fleeting moment. It is the stories told and the memories captured in these fleeting moments that I explore in my work
