Enabling Work-conserving Bandwidth Guarantees for Multi-tenant Datacenters via Dynamic Tenant-Queue Binding
Today's cloud networks are shared among many tenants. Bandwidth guarantees
and work conservation are two key properties to ensure predictable performance
for tenant applications and high network utilization for providers. Despite
significant efforts, very little prior work can really achieve both properties
simultaneously even some of them claimed so.
In this paper, we present QShare, an in-network based solution to achieve
bandwidth guarantees and work conservation simultaneously. QShare leverages
weighted fair queuing on commodity switches to slice network bandwidth for
tenants, and solves the challenge of queue scarcity through balanced tenant
placement and dynamic tenant-queue binding. QShare is readily implementable
with existing switching chips. We have implemented a QShare prototype and
evaluated it via both testbed experiments and simulations. Our results show
that QShare ensures bandwidth guarantees while driving network utilization to
over 91% even under unpredictable traffic demands.Comment: The initial work is published in IEEE INFOCOM 201
Multi-tenant Pub/Sub processing for real-time data streams
Devices and sensors generate streams of data across a diversity of locations and protocols. That data usually reaches a central platform that is used to store and process the streams. Processing can be done in real time, with transformations and enrichment happening on-the-fly, but it can also happen after data is stored and organized in repositories. In the former case, stream processing technologies are required to operate on the data; in the latter batch analytics and queries are of common use.
This paper introduces a runtime to dynamically construct data stream processing topologies based on user-supplied code. These dynamic topologies are built on-the-fly using a data subscription model defined by the applications that consume data. Each user-defined processing unit is called a Service Object. Every Service Object consumes input data streams and may produce output streams that others can consume. The subscription-based programing model enables multiple users to deploy their own data-processing services. The runtime does the dynamic forwarding of data and execution of Service Objects from different users. Data streams can originate in real-world devices or they can be the outputs of Service Objects.
The runtime leverages Apache STORM for parallel data processing, that combined with dynamic user-code injection provides multi-tenant stream processing topologies. Tenant Mix Variety in Regional Shopping Centres: Some UK Empirical Analyses
The variety and quality of the tenant mix within a shopping centre is a key concern in shopping centre management. Tenant mix determines the extent of externalities between outlets in the centre, helps establish the image of the centre and, as a result, determines the attractiveness of the centre for consumers. This then translates into sales and rents. However, the management of tenant mix has largely been based on perceived “optimum” arrangements and industry rules of thumb. This paper attempts to model the impact of tenant mix on the rent paid by retailers in larger UK shopping centres and, hence, the returns made by shopping centre landlords. It extends work on shopping centre rent determination (see Working Paper 10/03) utilising a database of 148 regional shopping centres in the UK, with detailed data for over 1900 tenants. Econometric models test the relationship between rental levels and the levels of retail concentration and diversity, while controlling for a range of continuous and qualitative characteristics of each tenant, each retail product, and each shopping centre. Factor analysis is then used to extract the core retail and service categories from the tenant lists of the 148 shopping centres. The factor scores from these core retailer factors are then tested against rent payable. The 'responsible' tenant and the problem of apathy
In the last decade, the UK New Labour government has emphasised tenant participation in housing policy. Consequently, those individuals who decide to opt out of participation processes have been problematised as ‘apathetic’, and identified as needing to be ‘empowered’ through professional interventions. Drawing on research about community ownership in Glasgow, this paper argues that tenants' reasons for not getting involved are more than simply lack of interest. Tenants articulated an instrumental approach to participation, and rejected the conflation of tenant participation with tenant management. Practical barriers also obstructed their latent motivation
Greening Multi-Tenant Data Center Demand Response
Data centers have emerged as promising resources for demand response,
particularly for emergency demand response (EDR), which saves the power grid
from incurring blackouts during emergency situations. However, currently, data
centers typically participate in EDR by turning on backup (diesel) generators,
which is both expensive and environmentally unfriendly. In this paper, we focus
on "greening" demand response in multi-tenant data centers, i.e., colocation
data centers, by designing a pricing mechanism through which the data center
operator can efficiently extract load reductions from tenants during emergency
periods to fulfill energy reduction requirement for EDR. In particular, we
propose a pricing mechanism for both mandatory and voluntary EDR programs,
ColoEDR, that is based on parameterized supply function bidding and provides
provably near-optimal efficiency guarantees, both when tenants are price-taking
and when they are price-anticipating. In addition to analytic results, we
extend the literature on supply function mechanism design, and evaluate ColoEDR
using trace-based simulation studies. These validate the efficiency analysis
and conclude that the pricing mechanism is both beneficial to the environment
and to the data center operator (by decreasing the need for backup diesel
generation), while also aiding tenants (by providing payments for load
