Certification Can Count: The Case of Aircraft Mechanics
[Excerpt]
In 2000, aircraft mechanics and service technicians certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) earned on average 15.78 per hour, over $4.00 less than their FAA certified counterparts. Total employment for aircraft mechanics and service technicians in all industries in 2000 was 135,730. Because the Federal Government may use Federal certification types other than FAA for its aircraft mechanics, only private industry data are presented in this summary. Private industry employed 118,770 aircraft mechanics and service technicians in 2000. Of this total, almost 83 percent were FAA certified.
Over 95 percent of the private industry employment for aircraft mechanics and service technicians could be found in seven industries: Aircraft and parts manufacturing; air transportation, scheduled; air transportation, nonscheduled; airports, flying fields, and services; machinery, equipment, and supplies, wholesale trade; personnel supply services; and management and public relations. (Two of these industries, personnel supply services and management and public relations, have been combined for this summary.

Strain gage installation manual
Detailed specifications for installing laboratory strain gages are compiled into handy reference manual that provides laboratory technicians with ready source of instructions on techniques and procedures for cementing a wide variety of strain gages onto most of the commonly encountered engineering materials
Resistance to teamworking in a UK research and development laboratory
This article presents an ethnographic exploration of resistance to teamworking in a UK research and development laboratory named RDL. It focuses on the nature of autonomy and responsibility and the implications for resistance. It finds that resistance is shaped by the laboratory technicians’ individualistic interactions with technology, the laboratory layout and the technicians’ desire for personal task-related autonomy and individual responsibility rather than team-based accountability. However, although resistance is linked to an individualistic interpretation of work it is supported by collective collusion. The article also finds that resistance is not necessarily anti-work. It is simultaneously oriented towards the interests of the company and individual technicians through the technicians’ desire to perform their job well. Finally, the article demonstrates the local and constructed nature of resistance

Women IT Technicians: moving through the glass partition
A study of the lives and careers of women ICT technicians offers a different perspective to other research which focuses on traditional educational routes into computing professions. As part of the JIVE Partners project funded by the European Equal programme, we have recently completed a research study using a qualitative longitudinal approach that followed 20 women ICT technicians who were training to become Microsoft Certified Systems Engineers. We found that their routes into ICT were complex and varied and had often involved crossing boundaries between jobs which are usually gender segregated. Rather than reaching a glass ceiling that blocked their upward progression, these women found ways to make a lateral transition through a ‘glass partition’ into areas of work that have traditionally been dominated by men.
Whilst women form significant numbers of those studying and working with ICTs, they are usually concentrated in administrative contexts rather than in technical occupations. Although precise figures are difficult to ascertain, there are few women working as ICT technicians or support staff and those that do work in these fields find that their career prospects are limited due to the attitudes and practices within this sector.
Women in the study had a range of technical job roles some of which spanned traditional gender boundaries. The majority of the women did not choose ICT as their first profession, and for many of them there was an element of luck or chance in their entry into their current job roles. While formal careers advice had been minimal, family members (male and female) were important influencers, either as role models or as a source of information and encouragement. Prior to entering work in technical areas of ICT, these women had a range of educational backgrounds; they were often quite highly qualified but not in ICT subjects. Career decisions and future plans were strongly influenced by work life balance consideration
Elaboration of capacity building in Agroecology
In Madagascar as in many other countries, Agriculture has to face big challenges regarding soil degradation, climate change, food security, coupled with high rate of population growth. There is a real need to better produce and to change the paradigm of agricultural practices and training. Conservation agriculture, based on ecosystem services provided by biodiversity, could be considered as an ecological modernization of agricultural systems. It corresponds to a paradigm shift due to the complexity in designing and implementing it. For these reasons, top level staff, technicians and farmers need to be trained in the innovative techniques to comply with this change of paradigm. In the early 2000 many projects were starting the dissemination of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and Conservation Agriculture (CA) in many parts of Madagascar. Monitoring and evaluation of these projects revealed the lack of skillful technicians and general knowledge on CA and CSA. The symposium on CA held in 2010 on behalf of GSDM confirmed this lack of CA based training courses. From 2011, GSDM started to elaborate a reference manual for the training on CSA and CA intended for trainees with a good background in agronomy and extension. The main objective is to have a bulk of technicians holding a specialized diploma in CSA and CA. The elaboration of this reference training manual was a participative approach involving government institutions and private sectors involved in agricultural training. The method implemented by GSDM took in account the agricultural practices, the different jobs opportunities and the needed skills by the stakeholders of rural development. The referential document was approved by the rural development actors and governmental agencies involved in agricultural training. This diploma will be presented for accreditation at the appropriate Ministries. In terms of schedule, the training of trainers will be completed early 2015 and the training itself will start in 2015. How does the Moby-Go resources impact teaching and learning in the sample room?
The purpose of this research is to consider to what extent the moby-go could be used to enhance teaching and learning in the sample room studio. A qualitative study was carried out in which I focused on using the visualiser, the cam-corder and the laptop to ascertain to what extent these various pieces of equipment could be imbedded in teaching and their effects on the students, the technicians and the tutor.
I have constantly sought to make the delivery of my lessons more creative, engaging and fresh. I have also considered how computers could play a useful or central part of the sample room. I will now endeavour to investigate if this could also lift my performance to another level in delivering more captivating and lively teaching sessions.
This research seeks to discover how user-friendly computer equipments are for tutors, technicians and above all the students. It seeks to discover its benefits, to whom and in what capacity. It also seeks to discover if the moby-go is fully developed to suit the requirements for use in the sample room
Chapter 5. The Tamarkan Players Present : Tamarkan Convalescent Camp
Tamarkan, Thailand, became a convalescent camp for the POWs who had worked on the Burma side of the railway. It was here that Aussie showman Norman Carter inspired a team of designers and stage technicians to mount a series of popular musical revues that were noteworthy for their elaborate sets, props, and costumes.https://digitalcommons.macalester.edu/thdabooks/1007/thumbnail.jp
