Conflicting Tendencies in the Development of Scientific and Technical Language Varieties: Metaphorization vs. Standardization
The present paper discusses relations between meaning and context as an interactive process that promotes cognition and communication, both intralingual and interlingual. The article also studies two evident conflicting tendencies in the development of technical language: metaphorization and standardization. Metaphorical meaning extension is characteristic of technical vocabulary in all discourse domains. At the same time, contemporary development of corpus linguistics facilitates standardization of terms. Taking into account pragmatic aspects of the text environment, i.e. referential, situational, cultural and social contexts, language users can interpret the meaning of new terms, establish relations and interconnections between terms and concepts within a text, domain and entire scientific and technical discourse. In the present article, observations on the nature and application of contemporary technical terminology are made on the basis of extensive empirical research
Conceptual search – ESI, litigation and the issue of language
Across the globe, legal, business and technical practitioners charged with managing
information are continually challenged by rapid-fire evolution and growth in the legal
and technology fields. In the United States, new compliance requirements,
amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) and corresponding case
law, along with technical advances, have made litigation support one of the most
exciting professions in the legal arena. In the UK, revisions to the Practice Direction
to CPR Rule 31 require parties in civil litigation to consider the impacts associated
with electronic documents.
One emerging technology trends—both aiding and complicating the management of
electronically stored information (ESI) in litigation in the US, EU and UK alike—is
the notion of “conceptual search.” This paper focuses on the evolution of conceptual
search technology, and predictions of where this science will take legal professionals
and technical information managers in coming years and a look at the advantages
conceptual search can provide in dealing with the issue of language.
This paper will focus primarily and the latent semantic analysis approach to
conceptual search and why this approach is advantageous when searching ESI
regardless of the language used in the documents, even to the extent of allowing for
cross language searching and accurate searching of documents that contain co-mingle
foreign terms with the native language
A Survey on IT-Techniques for a Dynamic Emergency Management in Large Infrastructures
This deliverable is a survey on the IT techniques that are relevant to the three use cases of the project EMILI. It describes the state-of-the-art in four complementary IT areas: Data cleansing, supervisory control and data acquisition, wireless sensor networks and complex event processing. Even though the deliverable’s authors have tried to avoid a too technical language and have tried to explain every concept referred to, the deliverable might seem rather technical to readers so far little familiar with the techniques it describes
Legal Terminology and Lesser Used Languages: The Case of Mòcheno
Since 2003 the Institute for Specialised Communication and Multilingualism of the European Academy of Bolzano (EURAC) offers education courses in legal terminology work, coupled with introductions in related/complementary disciplines, e.g. documentation, specialised translation and technical writing. Next to professional trainings, the Institute held also ad-hoc courses, such as a two-day course organised in 2008 for the Mòcheni, a Germanic minority living in the Italian Province of Trento. Since the passing of provincial law no. 6/2008, which foresees specific measures for the protection and promotion of local language minorities, the Mòcheno-speaking community has the right to use their language in all situations of social, economic and administrative life in both oral and written communications. Notwithstanding the recent compilation of a standard grammar, the Mòcheno language is not yet developed for the use in technical and specialised contexts. Indeed, the most urgent needs seem to exist in the translation of administrative terminology
Functional programming languages for verification tools: experiences with ML and Haskell
We compare Haskell with ML as programming languages for verification tools, based on our experience developing TRUTH in Haskell and the Edinburgh Concurrency Workbench (CWB) in ML. We discuss not only technical language features but also the "worlds" of the languages, for example, the availability of tools and libraries
Cloud Process Execution Engine - Evaluation of the Core Concepts
In this technical report we describe describe the Domain Specific Language
(DSL) of the Workflow Execution Execution (WEE). Instead of interpreting an XML
based workflow description language like BPEL, the WEE uses a minimized but
expressive set of statements that runs directly on to of a virtual machine that
supports the Ruby language.Frameworks/Virtual Machines supporting supporting
this language include Java, .NET and there exists also a standalone Virtual
Machine. Using a DSL gives us the advantage of maintaining a very compact code
base of under 400 lines of code, as the host programming language implements
all the concepts like parallelism, threads, checking for syntactic correctness.
The implementation just hooks into existing statements to keep track of the
workflow and deliver information about current existing context variables and
state to the environment that embeds WEE
