    Do Community-Based Corrections Have an Effect on Recidivism Rates? A Review of Community Supervision, Supportive Reintegration, Electronic Monitoring Programs and Their Impacts on Reducing Reoffending

    This paper will examine the impact and effect community-based corrections have on the reduction of recidivism for adult offenders. More specifically, I will focus on three commonly used types of such corrections in the United States: community supervision, supportive reintegration, and electronic monitoring. I propose that these community-based correctional programs will reduce reoffending rates. I will first provide a theoretical perspective to provide a foundational support, followed by a background of community-based corrections and their usage in contemporary American courts. I will then review the research regarding community supervision, supportive reintegration, and electronic monitoring, and discuss how these programs affect recidivism, how they may be improved, and implications for future research. Offender-community integration is more relevant than ever as prison populations continue to increase and more inmates are being released back into society (U.S. Department of Justice 2009). Community-based corrections, if utilized appropriately and efficiently, have the potential to decrease overcrowded prisons, be more cost-effective than incarceration, and reduce reoffending rates (Bouffard and Muftic 2006)

    The spillover effects of monitoring:A field experiment

    Published Online: March 13, 2015We provide field experimental evidence of the effects of monitoring in a context where productivity is multidimensional and only one dimension is monitored and incentivized. We hire students to do a job for us. The job consists of identifying euro coins. We study the direct effects of monitoring and penalizing mistakes on work quality and evaluate spillovers on unmonitored dimensions of productivity (punctuality and theft). We find that monitoring improves work quality only if incentives are harsh, but substantially reduces punctuality irrespectively of the associated incentives. Monitoring does not affect theft, with 10% of participants stealing overall. Our findings are supportive of a reciprocity mechanism, whereby workers retaliate for being distrusted

    The Spectral Invariant Approximation within Canopy Radiative Transfer to Support the Use of the EPIC/DSCOVR Oxygen B-band for Monitoring Vegetation

    EPIC (Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera) is a 10-channel spectroradiometer onboard DSCOVR (Deep Space Climate Observatory) spacecraft. In addition to the NIR (780 nm) and the ‘red’ (680 nm) channels, EPIC also has the O2 A-band (764±0.2 nm) and B-band (687.75±0.2 nm). The EPIC at-sensor Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is defined as the difference between NIR and ‘red’ channels normalized to their sum. However, the use of the O2 B-band instead of the ‘red’ channel mitigates the effect ofatmosphere on surface reflectance because it reduces contribution from the radiation scattered by theatmosphere. Applying the radiative transfer theory and the spectral invariant approximation to EPIC observations, we provide supportive arguments for using the O2 band instead of the red channel for monitoring the vegetation dynamics

    The overall objective of the DMP is to arrest land degradation in Africa's desert margins through demonstration and capacity building activities. The GEF increment to this project will enable the programme to address issues of global environmental importance, in addition to the issues of national economic and environmental importance, and in particular the loss of biological diversity, reduced sequestration of carbon, and increased soil erosion and sedimentation. Key sites harbouring globally significant ecosystems and threatened biodiversity have been selected in each of the nine countries to serve as field laboratories for demonstrations activities related to monitoring and assessment of biodiversity status, testing of most promising natural resource management options, developing sustainable alternative livelihoods and policy guidelines and replicating successful models. The project will make a significant contribution in reducing land degradation in the marginal areas and help conserve biodiversity. Guidelines, recommendations and supportive national policies that address biodiversity concerns are envisaged to be in place in the implementing countries. (Résumé d'auteur

    Employee acceptability of wearable mental workload monitoring in industry 4.0 : a pilot study on motivational and contextual framing

    As Industry 4.0 will greatly challenge employee mental workload (MWL), research on objective wearable MWL-monitoring is in high demand. However, numerous research lines validating such technology might become redundant when employees eventually object to its implementation. In a pilot study, we manipulated two ways in which employees might perceive MWL-monitoring initiatives. We found that framing the technology in terms of serving intrinsic goals (e.g., improving health) together with an autonomy-supportive context (e.g., allowing discussion) yields higher user acceptability when compared to framing in terms of extrinsic goals (e.g., increasing productivity) together with a controlling context (e.g., mandating use). User acceptability still panned out neutral in case of the former, however - feeding into our own and suggested future work
