SN 2005cs in M51 I. The first month of evolution of a subluminous SN II plateau
Early time optical observations of supernova (SN) 2005cs in the Whirlpool
Galaxy (M51), are reported. Photometric data suggest that SN 2005cs is a
moderately under-luminous Type II plateau supernova (SN IIP). The SN was
unusually blue at early epochs (U-B ~ -0.9 about three days after explosion)
which indicates very high continuum temperatures. The spectra show relatively
narrow P-Cygni features, suggesting ejecta velocities lower than observed in
more typical SNe IIP. The earliest spectra show weak absorption features in the
blue wing of the He I 5876A absorption component and, less clearly, of H
and H. Based on spectral modelling, two different interpretations can
be proposed: these features may either be due to high-velocity H and He I
components, or (more likely) be produced by different ions (N II, Si II).
Analogies with the low-luminosity, Ni-poor, low-velocity SNe IIP are
also discussed.
While a more extended spectral coverage is necessary in order to determine
accurately the properties of the progenitor star, published estimates of the
progenitor mass seem not to be consistent with stellar evolution models.Comment: 12 pages, 11 Figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Temporal and habitat distribution of macrophytes in lowland eutrophic reservoir Gruža in Serbia
Background and Purpose: The research in this paper are based on the study of the distribution in time and space of macrophytes along the different parts of shoreline of Gruža Reservoir and emphasize the importance of establishing relations between distribution, diversity and mass of macrophytes and the ecological conditions of the environment. Development diversity of macrophytes needs to be constantly monitored and their regulation is necessary for Reservoir conservation, especially because the Reservoir is used as a water supply for a nearby city.
Materials and Methods: During the period 2004-2005 aquatic macrophytes were investigated (by the method of transects) bimonthly from May to October and results was compared with the results obtained during the research in 1986. Relative abundance was evaluated using a five degree scale. These data form the basis for the mathematical model with the following data: Relative Plant Mass for each species, cumulative Relative Plant Mass for growth forms and Mean Mass Indexes.
Results: Quantitative analysis of macrophytes indicates that the morphometrical characteristics of shoreline, water depth, vegetation characteristics and nutrient pollutants play an important role in the appearance, diversity and abundance of macrophytes.
Conclusions: The distribution of most aquatic macrophytes in Gruža Reservoir is heterogenous with mean mass indexes MMT (for all macrophytes in total stretches) and MMO (for stretches with their occurrence) values of different size and with low value of distribution ratio. Our results have confirmed previously set hypothesis that poor physical conditions, rather than water quality, might be responsible for restricting diversity of macrophytes
Ensemble Classification of Alzheimer's Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment Based on Complex Graph Measures from Diffusion Tensor Images
The human brain is a complex network of interacting regions. The gray matter regions of brain are interconnected by white matter tracts, together forming one integrative complex network. In this article, we report our investigation about the potential of applying brain connectivity patterns as an aid in diagnosing Alzheimer's disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). We performed pattern analysis of graph theoretical measures derived from Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) data representing structural brain networks of 45 subjects, consisting of 15 patients of Alzheimer's disease (AD), 15 patients of MCI, and 15 healthy subjects (CT). We considered pair-wise class combinations of subjects, defining three separate classification tasks, i.e., AD-CT, AD-MCI, and CT-MCI, and used an ensemble classification module to perform the classification tasks. Our ensemble framework with feature selection shows a promising performance with classification accuracy of 83.3% for AD vs. MCI, 80% for AD vs. CT, and 70% for MCI vs. CT. Moreover, our findings suggest that AD can be related to graph measures abnormalities at Brodmann areas in the sensorimotor cortex and piriform cortex. In this way, node redundancy coefficient and load centrality in the primary motor cortex were recognized as good indicators of AD in contrast to MCI. In general, load centrality, betweenness centrality, and closeness centrality were found to be the most relevant network measures, as they were the top identified features at different nodes. The present study can be regarded as a “proof of concept” about a procedure for the classification of MRI markers between AD dementia, MCI, and normal old individuals, due to the small and not well-defined groups of AD and MCI patients. Future studies with larger samples of subjects and more sophisticated patient exclusion criteria are necessary toward the development of a more precise technique for clinical diagnosis
Combining configuration and recommendation to enable an interactive guidance of product line configuration
This paper is interested in e-commerce for complex configurable products/systems. E-commerce makes a wide use of recommendation techniques to help customers identify relevant products or services in large collections of offers. One particular way to achieve this is to offer customers a panel of options among which they can select their preferred ones. A trend in the industry is to go a step further, beyond the selection of pre-defined products from a catalogue by handling products customization. The systems engineering community has shown that, based on product line engineering methods, techniques and tools, it is possible to produce customized products efficiently and at low cost. The problem is that there are usually so many products in a PL that it is impossible to specify all of them explicitly, and therefore traditional recommendation techniques cannot be simply applied. This paper proposes an approach that combines two complementary forms of guidance: configuration and recommendation, to help customers define their own products out of a product line specification. The proposed approach, called interactive configuration supports the combination by organizing the configuration process in a series of partial configurations where decisions are made by the recommendation. This paper illustrates this process by applying it to an example with the content based method for recommendation and the a priori configuration approach
