Social Dumping in the Transformation Process
Business representatives and union leaders in highly industrialised countries often accuse the governments of less-developed countries of practising social dumping in the sense of deliberately neglecting work-place safety legislation, co-determination rights and other fringe benefits which define the quality of workplaces. This paper refutes this view by modelling the transition path of a less-developed small open economy that faces transactions costs when trading capital and labour with the rest of the world. It shows that competitive markets and competitive governments choose Pareto efficient transition strategies which are characterised by a sluggish development of market wages and government-imposed social standards.
Involvement of Social Media Profiles in the Hiring Process
In recent years, social media has become a popular tool in the recruitment and selection process for employers. Many companies see it as a more cost efficient screening process than traditional background checks and interviews. However, its’ use comes with a greater risk for the company and potential applicants in terms of privacy violation and discrimination. This article will examine the rising popularity of the use of social media in the recruitment and selection process. In addition, it will explore the role social media plays in the hiring process from the viewpoint of employees in their respective companies versus undergraduate students who are among the applicant pool
Citizenship Education within the process of portuguese social democratization
Including Social Service Clients in the Organizational Decision Making Process
Empowerment of clients is a goal of many social service organizations and yet a concept that is hard to define and often complicated to implement. This professional project looks at the importance and practice of empowering parents in a teenage pregnancy prevention program through a case study. A survey of parents supported the idea of empowering practices leading to parents becoming partners with the organization in the education of the community. In a qualitative study, this researcher offers the practice of taking empowerment a step further in asking participants of the program to take part in the decision of what should be next for the program
Innovations in spatial planning as a social process – phases, actors, conflicts
The aim of this paper is to understand the social process of the emergence and institutionalization of innovations in spatial planning (which we describe as ‘social innovations’). The paper is based on a recently finished empirical and comparative study conducted in four distinct areas of spatial planning in Germany: urban design, neighbourhood development, urban regeneration and regional planning. The empirical cases selected in these areas encompass different topics, historical periods, degrees of maturity and spatial scales of innovation. As a temporal structure of the innovation processes in the different cases we identified five phases: ‘incubating, generating, formatting, stabilizing, adjusting’. In a cross-comparison of the case studies and along these phases, we furthermore found typical (groups of) actors, tensions and conflicts. In the focus of our case analyses are the following dimensions: (1) the content of the innovations, (2) actors, networks and communities involved as well as (3) institutions and institutionalization
Electronic Social Networks as Supporting Means of Educational Process in Higher Education Institutions
Given research describes experience of electronic social networks use in educational practices. It was determined that electronic social networks can be a powerful tool for support of educational process in higher education institutions, namely to support study of different disciplines. There are main advantages of electronic social networks use for education: universal accessibility and free of charge; possibility of instant messaging and multimedia data; user-friendly intuitive interface; ability to search data and information; availability of event scheduling, invitations, reminder settings; support for synchronous and asynchronous communication between network members; access from different devices. It is emphasized that one of the main advantages of electronic social networks is receipt of quick feedback and convenience of their tools and services. Nowadays, it is important to include network educational interaction in existing models of study organization. It is advisable to use electronic social networks to manage educational process in higher education institution. Efficiency of electronic social networks use depends on intensity and need for their use in educational system management for implementation of organizational, educational, psychological and pedagogical
functions and ensuring universal communication with subjects of educational process. Expediency of electronic social networks use to carry out research work at university is described. Electronic social networks are convenient tool to conduct surveys and questionnaires, to create thematic groups for specific issue discussion. Also it is possible to interact with researchers from different countries, share experiences and disseminate research findings, invite those who wish to participate in various scientific activities using these networks
Social Mobility in the United States as a Markov Process
Previous research on intergenerational mobility in income, occupation, or social class as a Markov process typically uses regression models to analyze cross-sectional data. In this paper we draw data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) to build Markov transition states, producing a set of stylized facts from these longitudinal data. We derive the probabilities that children will repeat the occupational, educational, or child-raising choices of their parents. This gives us insight into how such lifestyle choices are vertically transmitted from parents to children, and the degree of persistence of these choices over the generations.
Evolution of Human-like Social Grooming Strategies regarding Richness and Group Size
Human beings tend to cooperate with close friends, therefore they have to
construct strong social relationships to recieve cooperation from others.
Therefore they should have acquired their strategies of social relationship
construction through an evolutionary process. The behavior of social
relationship construction is know as "social grooming." In this paper, we show
that there are four classes including a human-like strategy in evolutionary
dynamics of social grooming strategies based on an evolutionary game
simulation. Social relationship strengths (as measured by frequency of social
grooming) often show a much skewed distribution (a power law distribution). It
may be due to time costs constraints on social grooming, because the costs are
too large to ignore for having many strong social relationships. Evolution of
humans' strategies of construction of social relationships may explain the
origin of human intelligence based on a social brain hypothesis. We constructed
an individual-based model to explore the evolutionary dynamics of social
grooming strategies. The model is based on behavior to win over others by
strengthening social relationships with cooperators. The results of
evolutionary simulations show the four classes of evolutionary dynamics. The
results depend on total resources and the ratio of each cooperator's resource
to the number of cooperators. One of the four classes is similar to a human
strategy, i.e. the strategies based on the Yule--Simon process of power law.Comment: 21 pages, 10 figure
