Avid Fan’s Impact on Casual Fans
In lieu of an abstract, here is the paper\u27s first paragraph: The lifeline of the sporting industry is the fans that attend the games, purchase merchandise, consume media, and passionately follow their favorite team or sport. Sport organizations do whatever they can to attract fans to their games and entice them to buy more tickets, merchandise, concessions and consume more of their team through social media, visits to the team website, and following the team. A critical area for these sport franchises to examine is why fans attend sporting events and what makes them a loyal fan of a certain team. Does the arena or stadium influence whether a fan attends a game? Does the team’s performance impact the fan’s decision? Do fans attend the game for pure entertainment because they have no attachment to the team? There are many reasons why a fan attends a game but another aspect to look at that has not been investigated thoroughly is what makes fans return to games. Sporting events have a high cost for the consumer because the fan needs to spend money on gas, parking, tickets, food, merchandise and the sporting event costs time in the fan’s day. When a fan attends a game, why would they make the monetary and time commitment that is necessary for a sporting event? There are many possible answers to this question but one valid answer is differentiated because of the lack of knowledge on the subject. For this reason, my research question is: how does fan avidity impact the return of another fan
The Sensoryscape of Theaters: A Case of Two University Associated Theaters
Live theater productions, must compete with other forms of entertainment offered in the experience economy (Barlow and Maul 2000). An impressive sensory experience that entertains and excites consumers is a key element that can differentiate and distinguish one experience from another (Gobe 2001). To be competitive theater productions should use their delivery facilities to provide an immersion experience in a theater’s sensoryscape.
Theater venues offer a sensory experience that contributes to the service offering and also provide an opportunity to contribute to the achievement of numerous marketing goals. By consciously developing the sensoryscape, not only will consumer enjoyment and satisfaction be increased but plans to return and positive word-of-mouth should result. Goals to increase group-supportive behavior (necessary for not-for-profit and cultural organizations) and attendance will be enhanced
Syracuse University Basketball: To Renovate the Carrier Dome or Build a New Arena
This study looked at how Syracuse University basketball fans’ spectator motives impacted their preference on whether to renovate the Carrier Dome or to build a new arena. The purpose of this research was to find out if these Syracuse University basketball fans differed from prior knowledge regarding sport spectator motivation. It was known that fan enjoyment is influenced by convenience of concessions and restrooms (Wakefield, 1995). However, it was also known that fans’ team identification affected resistance to change (Wu, 2012) and sense of home had a positive impact on stadium satisfaction (Lee, 2012). The sample for this study consisted of 93 Syracuse University basketball fans that had access to on online survey through Syracuse University basketball Twitter pages. The results of this study showed that 85% of fans preferred to renovate the Carrier Dome. There were 6 aspects of fan importance and fan satisfaction with the Carrier Dome that had significantly different means between the groups “renovate” and “build new.” Although these aspects had significantly different means statistically, the greatest difference in means between the two groups practically was satisfaction with sense of home. When fans were asked why they preferred to renovate the Carrier Dome they used words such as unique, iconic, landmark, and tradition. These findings were important because it showed that Syracuse University basketball fans had an emotional attachment to the Carrier Dome and would prefer to renovate the facility and continue to have the team play there
Taken back by the ballpark: The role of nostalgia in the Minor League Baseball spectator experience
The use of nostalgia has become a feature in baseball ballparks in recent years, with research showcasing the prevalence of nostalgic stimuli including bricks, steel beams, and old-fashioned scoreboards popular in the past. The impact of such stimuli on spectators’ emotions and behavior had yet to be explored, though. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to investigate the impact of nostalgia on minor league baseball spectator emotional and behavioral responses.
Data collection occurred at three minor league baseball games during June 2017. Utilizing the SOR framework (Mehrabian & Russell, 1974) as the theoretical foundation, a 39-item instrument was constructed by adapting items from previously-constructed surveys in the contexts of sport and general consumer behavior. Using systematic random sampling, a total of 232 completed and usable surveys were collected.
To investigate the impact of nostalgia on spectators’ emotional responses, structural equation modeling was utilized. The study sought to specifically examine whether nostalgia evoked through spectators’ senses (sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch) and social interaction impacted their pleasure. Results showed that only social interaction was a significant positive predictor of pleasure, with sight a significant negative predictor of pleasure. A significant, positive relationship between pleasure and spectator’s behavioral intentions was also found. Finally, the study explored whether spectators’ arousal moderated the relationship between pleasure and arousal. The results displayed that arousal did not significantly moderate this relationship, with pleasure and arousal maintaining a strong correlation. Results and implications of the study are discussed, with suggestions for future research provided
Curtains Up - Utilizing Assistive Technology for Inclusive Theater Experiences
Community partnerships can enhance inclusive spaces within the performing arts maximizing the knowledge and expertise within organizations. This article shares the components of a collaboration between a non-profit performing arts venue and a graduate program in assistive technology (AT). Through this affiliation visual and communication supports were designed and implemented at sensory-friendly and relaxed performances offered at the theater. A patron profile is presented to illustrate how the supports were integrated before, during, and after the event. The article concludes with next steps and actual patron perspectives as a result of the relationship
“A Place Where Everyone Feels Welcome”: Strategies for Creating Sensory and Socially Inclusive Public Libraries for Autistic Users
The aim of this thesis is to uncover barriers autistic users have in the public library and how Norwegian libraries can become more accessible and socially inclusive spaces for the user group. In order to address these barriers, a set of research questions have been formulated: 1) What sensory barriers do autistic people experience in public libraries, and how can these be addressed? 2) What social challenges do autistic users face in public libraries, and what changes could reduce these barriers? 3) What specific resources or spaces do autistic library users feel would support their needs and interests? And 4) What practical steps can libraries take to implement changes that enhance accessibility for autistic users? A survey with 110 participants was conducted, including autistic individuals and optionally their guardians. The data were analysed both in a quantitative and qualitative way, the qualitative data being gathered from the optional longer answers in the survey.
The survey found that this user group has a range of sensory and social barriers and that for some individuals, these barriers impact their ability to participate in community activities and engage fully with library services. It also lays out practical strategies and recommendations based on the findings that libraries can use and adapt to their individual library depending on their available resources. These recommendations include areas of predictability, space, sensoryscape, understanding, adjustment, and recovery.
The thesis concludes with a continuous need to go deeper into how libraries can realistically accommodate for their autistic user base, specifically with a stronger focus on how to balance predictability and adaptability in order to create environments that foster safe community building for autistic people
I Am Distinctive When I Belong: Meeting the Need for Optimal Distinctiveness through Team Identification
The development of stronger team identity has previously been explained through the social identity aspect of belonging. Although this has contributed much to our understanding of sport fans, it has neglected an alternative explanation for team identity, specifically the search for distinctiveness. How then do fans develop stronger team identity by \u27standing out\u27 as opposed to \u27fitting in\u27? This paper provides evidence of seven identity management strategies used by fans with a strong psychological connection to their chosen team. Saturation sampling was employed to interview 29 South African rugby union fans via semi-structured interviews, followed by a directed approach to content analysis. The results contribute a stronger explanation of how the psychological need for optimal distinctiveness functions within the attachment process towards stronger fan loyalty, and provides a more complete explanation for the way in which fans can \u27stand out\u27 while still belonging
An examination of the sooriyawewa cricket stadium; provocation of the stadium facility accessibility on player satisfaction
Player satisfaction is significantly impacted by the facilities and services offered in a cricket stadium. The presence of adequate amenities in stadiums, such as training facilities, medical rooms, showers, and locker rooms, plays a critical role in enhancing athletes' overall satisfaction and performance. Therefore this study aimed to examin the provocation of the stadium facility accessibility on player satisfaction. A quantitative approach was adopted for the study. A questionnaire was administered to a total of 15 respondents, who were selected as the sample for this study using the snowball sampling technique. The findings of the study revealed that there is a statistically significance relationship between stadium facilities and players’ satisfaction. The findings of this study indicate no statistically significant difference between players' satisfaction and selected demographic factors. However, accessibility, electronic displays, and cleanliness are been identified as independent variables which exhibited a statistically significant positive relationship with players' satisfaction. This suggests that stadium facilities have a direct impact on enhancing player satisfaction. The results provide valuable managerial insights for stadium management and event organizers, emphasizing the need for continuous investment in advanced display systems to enhance players' experience. Additionally, player satisfaction should be viewed as an ongoing priority, necessitating continuous improvements in stadium facilities and amenities
Co-creating the pitch: An exploration of the role of traditions on co-creation in European soccer
As the sport of soccer continues to grow throughout the world – and particularly into North America – the current study assessed the causal effect fans’ sensory traditions have on co-creation. Data were collected by intercepting Portugese and Spanish soccer attendees outside of the stadium prior to the match’s start. A total of 282 useable surveys were retrieved from fans during the 2022-23 seasons. Path modeling results indicate that traditions relating to aesthetics, sound, and beverage provided the greatest means to co-create experiences for attendees. The study’s results align with previous research within retail and sport exhibiting the positive impact of the sensory experience on social, psychological, and behavioral outcomes (Clark et al., 2012; Hungenberg et al., 2020). Furthermore, the findings provide support that sensory experiences wielding heightened levels of co-creation for fans contribute positively to merchandise spending and arrival time. This is meaningful as sport organizations continue to seek marketing strategies that will overcome the widespread media platforms that have made consuming sport remotely so accessible
