Quantitative geometric analysis of rib, costal cartilage and sternum from childhood to teenagehood
Better understanding of the effects of growth on children’s bones and cartilage is necessary for clinical and biomechanical purposes. The aim of this study is to define the 3D geometry of children’s rib cages: including sternum, ribs and costal cartilage. Three-dimensional reconstructions of 960 ribs, 518 costal cartilages and 113 sternebrae were performed on thoracic CT-scans of 48 children, aged four months to 15 years. The geometry of the sternum was detailed and nine parameters were used to describe the ribs and rib cages. A "costal index" was defined as the ratio between cartilage length and whole rib length to evaluate the cartilage ratio for each rib level. For all children, the costal index decreased from rib level one to three and increased from level three to seven. For all levels, the cartilage accounted for 45 to 60% of the rib length, and was longer for the first years of life. The mean costal index decreased by 21% for subjects over three years old compared to those under three (p<10-4). The volume of the sternebrae was found to be highly age dependent. Variability of Child Rib Bone Hounsfield Units using in vivo Computed Tomography
The variability assessment of the rib bone mechanical properties during the growth process is still missing. These properties could not be obtained in vivo on children. Relationships have been obtained between Hounsfield Units from computed tomography (CT) and mechanical properties (e.g. for the cortical bone on adults). As a first step for investigation of the mechanical properties of child ribs, the aim of this study was to determine the Hounsfield Units variation of child ribs from CT‐scan data, by rib level, along the rib and within the rib sections. Twenty‐seven right ribs of levels 4, 6 and 9 were processed from 11 thoracic CT scans of children without bone lesions aged between 1 and 10 years. A first set of 10 equidistributed cross‐sections normal to the rib midline were extracted. Sixteen equally distributed elements defined 4 areas into the cortical band: internal, external, caudal and cranial. Within the rib sections, Hounsfield Units were found significantly higher in internal and external areas than in caudal and cranial. In a further step using calibrated CT scans, it would be possible to derive the mechanical properties of in vivo child ribs using bone density correlation with Hounsfield Units
Nonlinear self-flipping of polarization states in asymmetric waveguides
Waveguides of subwavelength dimensions with asymmetric geometries, such as
rib waveguides, can display nonlinear polarization effects in which the
nonlinear phase difference dominates the linear contribution, provided the
birefringence is sufficiently small. We demonstrate that self-flipping
polarization states can appear in such rib waveguides at low (mW) power levels.

La evaluación institucional del nivel terciario: contexto dominicano
El Dr. Leonel Rodríguez Rib ocupó la Rectoría de la Universidad APEC por 16 años, desde 1974 hasta 1990. Estos fueron años en cierto modo fundamentales, pues en ellos se verificó la transformación institucional y de identidad por la que el Instituto de Estudios Superiores pasó a ser Universidad APEC. Testimonio de un agente privilegiado de ese cambio, la selección de discursos presentados aquí constituye una digna muestra de las preocupaciones, esfuerzos y esperanzas que impulsaron entonces la labor de esta comunidad educativa. En estos textos resaltan especialmente los temas relativos a la calidad de la educación superior y a las posibilidades de acceso a esta que deben ser creadas, al empeño por hacer de la universidad un sistema integrado de fuerzas positivas y de vanguardia por el que la sociedad toda se regenera. La universidad, viene a decir del rector Rodríguez Rib, sirve a la comunidad nacional y mundial mediante la entrega de un ciudadano consciente de que sus responsabilidades de aprendizaje permanecen durante toda la vida; de que el grado obtenido solo lo faculta en el empleo de las herramientas intelectuales fundamentales con que deberá seguir profundizando en su área de trabajo y en sí mismo. Solo así podrá estar preparado para afrontar de modo creativo el futuro de un mundo cambiante impulsado por el conocimiento.En el artículo se expone la experiencia de la evaluación de las instituciones de educación superior en la República Dominica y los procesos llevados a cabo por la Asociación Dominicana para el Autoestudio y la Acreditación (ADAA)
Heat transfer and pressure drop in blade cooling channels with turbulence promoters
Repeated rib roughness elements have been used in advanced turbine cooling designs to enhance the internal heat transfer. Often the ribs are perpendicular to the main flow direction so that they have an angle-of-attack of 90 deg. The objective of the project was to investigate the effect of rib angle-of-attack on the pressure drop and the average heat transfer coefficients in a square duct with two opposite rib-roughned walls for Reynolds number varied from 8000 to 80,000. The rib height-to-equivalent diameter ratio (e/D) was kept at a constant value of 0.063, the rib pitch-to-height ratio (P/e) was varied from 10 to 20, and the rib angle-of-attack (alpha) was varied from 90 deg to 60 deg to 45 deg to 30 deg respectively. Two types of entrance conditions were examined, namely, long duct and sudden contraction. The heat transfer coefficient distribution on the smooth side wall and the rough side wall at the entrance and the fully developed regions were measured. Thermal performance comparison indicated that the pumping power requirement for the rib with an oblique angle to the flow (alpha = 45 deg to 30 deg) was about 20 to 50 percent lower than the rib with a 90 deg angle to the flow for a given heat transfer duty
3D reconstruction of ribcage geometry from biplanar radiographs using a statistical parametric model approach
Rib cage 3D reconstruction is an important prerequisite for thoracic spine modelling, particularly for studies of the deformed thorax in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. This study proposes a new method for rib cage 3D reconstruction from biplanar radiographs, using a statistical parametric model approach. Simplified parametric models were defined at the hierarchical levels of rib cage surface, rib midline and rib surface, and applied on a database of 86 trunks. The resulting parameter database served to statistical models learning which were used to quickly provide a first estimate of the reconstruction from identifications on both radiographs. This solution was then refined by manual adjustments in order to improve the matching between model and image. Accuracy was assessed by comparison with 29 rib cages from CT scans in terms of geometrical parameter differences and in terms of line-to-line error distance between the rib midlines. Intra and inter-observer reproducibility were determined regarding 20 scoliotic patients. The first estimate (mean reconstruction time of 2’30) was sufficient to extract the main rib cage global parameters with a 95% confidence interval lower than 7%, 8%, 2% and 4° for rib cage volume, antero-posterior and lateral maximal diameters and maximal rib hump, respectively. The mean error distance was 5.4 mm (max 35mm) down to 3.6 mm (max 24 mm) after the manual adjustment step (+3’30). Performance and carcass traits of progeny of Limousin sires differing in genetic merit
peer-reviewedGenetic indices for growth and carcass classification are published for beef sires used in Ireland for artificial insemination (AI). The objective of this study was to compare growth and carcass traits of progeny of Limousin sires of low and high genetic index for growth. A total of 70 progeny (42 males and 28 females) out of predominantly Holstein-Friesian cows by 7 AI Limousin sires were reared together to slaughter. The 7 sires were classified as low (n=3) or high (n=4) index based on their published genetic index for growth. The male progeny were reared entire and all animals were slaughtered at about 20 months of age. Carcasses were classified for conformation and fatness, and a rib joint (ribs 6 to 10) was separated into fat, muscle and bone. Growth rate did not differ significantly between the index groups but tended to be higher for the high index progeny. This higher growth rate, combined with a significantly higher kill out proportion, resulted in carcass weight andcarcass weight per day of age being significantly higher for the high index progeny. Carcass conformation and fat class were not affected by genetic index, nor was the composition of the rib joint. Compared with males, females had a significantly lower growth rate and kill out proportion and, consequently, had a significantly lower carcass weight. The proportions of fat and bone in the rib joint were significantly higher, and the proportion of muscle was significantly lower for females than for males. It is concluded that carcass weight reflected sire group genetic index for growth but feed intake, carcass classification and rib joint composition were not affected
