Berkeley on Voluntary Motion: A Conservationist Account
A plausible reading of Berkeley’s view of voluntary motion is occasionalism; this, however, leads to a specious conclusion against his argument of human action. Differing from an unqualified occasionalist reading, I consider the alternative reading that Berkeley is a conservationist regarding bodily motion by the human mind at will. That is, finite minds (spirits) immediately cause motions in their body parts, albeit under the divine conservation. My argument then comports with the conservationist reading from three perspectives: (i) theodicy that the human mind is held liable for sinful actions; (ii) an account of the human mind influencing other minds; and (iii) an improper but necessary directing principle of the human mind. This article is a stepping stone to grasping why the conservationist reading is more coherent than the occasionalist one
Improving temporal resolution of ultrafast electron diffraction by eliminating arrival time jitter induced by radiofrequency bunch compression cavities
The temporal resolution of sub-relativistic ultrafast electron diffraction
(UED) is generally limited by radio frequency (RF) phase and amplitude jitter
of the RF lenses that are used to compress the electron pulses. We
theoretically show how to circumvent this limitation by using a combination of
several RF compression cavities. We show that if powered by the same RF source
and with a proper choice of RF field strengths, RF phases and distances between
the cavities, the combined arrival time jitter due to RF phase jitter of the
cavities is cancelled at the compression point. We also show that the effect of
RF amplitude jitter on the temporal resolution is negligible when passing
through the cavity at a RF phase optimal for (de)compression. This will allow
improvement of the temporal resolution in UED experiments to well below 100 fs
Tag-Aware Recommender Systems: A State-of-the-art Survey
In the past decade, Social Tagging Systems have attracted increasing
attention from both physical and computer science communities. Besides the
underlying structure and dynamics of tagging systems, many efforts have been
addressed to unify tagging information to reveal user behaviors and
preferences, extract the latent semantic relations among items, make
recommendations, and so on. Specifically, this article summarizes recent
progress about tag-aware recommender systems, emphasizing on the contributions
from three mainstream perspectives and approaches: network-based methods,
tensor-based methods, and the topic-based methods. Finally, we outline some
other tag-related works and future challenges of tag-aware recommendation

Another step closer to measuring the ghosts in the nursery: preliminary validation of the Trauma Reflective Functioning Scale
The aim of this study was to examine preliminary evidence of the validity of the Trauma Reflective Functioning Scale and to investigate reflective functioning (RF) and attachment in pregnant women with histories of trauma, with a particular focus on the capacity to mentalize regarding trauma and its implications for adaptation to pregnancy and couple functioning. The Adult Attachment Interview was used to assess attachment, unresolved trauma and mentalization (measured as RF) regarding relationships with attachment figures (RF-G) and trauma (RF-T) in 100 pregnant women with histories of abuse and neglect. The majority (63%) of women had insecure attachment states of mind and approximately half were unresolved regarding trauma. Furthermore, the majority of women manifested deficits specific to RF-T. Their RF-T was significantly lower than their RF-G; the findings indicate that women with histories of childhood abuse and neglect do not manifest a generic inhibition of reflectiveness, but a collapse of mentalization specific to trauma. Low RF-T, indicative of difficulty in considering traumatic experiences in mental state terms, was associated with difficulty in investment in the pregnancy and lack of positive feelings about the baby and motherhood. In addition, low RF-T was also associated with difficulties in intimate relationships. Results of a regression analysis with RF indicated that RF-T was the best predictor of investment in pregnancy and couple functioning. In sum, the study provides preliminary evidence that RF-T can be reliably measured and is a valid construct that has potential usefulness for research and clinical practice. It highlights the importance of mentalization specifically about trauma and suggests that it is not the experience of trauma per se, but the absence of mentalization regarding trauma that is associated with difficulties in close relationships and in making the transition to parenthood
High Dynamic Range RF Front End with Noise Cancellation and Linearization for WiMAX Receivers
This research deals with verification of the high dynamic range for a heterodyne radio frequency (RF) front end. A 2.6 GHz RF front end is designed and implemented in a hybrid microwave integrated circuit (HMIC) for worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) receivers. The heterodyne RF front end consists of a low-noise amplifier (LNA) with noise cancellation, an RF bandpass filter (BPF), a downconverter with linearization, and an intermediate frequency (IF) BPF. A noise canceling technique used in the low-noise amplifier eliminates a thermal noise and then reduces the noise figure (NF) of the RF front end by 0.9 dB. Use of a downconverter with diode linearizer also compensates for gain compression, which increases the input-referred third-order intercept point (IIP3) of the RF front end by 4.3 dB. The proposed method substantially increases the spurious-free dynamic range (DRf) of the RF front end by 3.5 dB
Function of B cells expressing a human immunoglobulin M rheumatoid factor autoantibody in transgenic mice.
We have generated transgenic mice that express the immunoglobulin (Ig)M heavy chain and kappa light chain genes coding for a human IgM rheumatoid factor (RF), Les. Transgenic B cells expressing human IgM RF show striking similarities to their counterparts in normal humans. They comprise a significant proportion of the adult B cell population, but secrete only low levels of RF into the serum. The RF transgene-expressing B cells localize to primary B cell follicles and the mantle zone regions of secondary follicles in the spleen. Using these mice we have been able to show that one of the central functions of normal RF-expressing B cells may be to act as highly efficient antigen-presenting cells for low concentrations of immune-complexed antigen. High levels of secretion of IgM RF can not be induced under normal circumstances, although RF-expressing B cells proliferate well in vitro to both aggregated human IgG and anti-human IgM antibodies. However, these mice are not intrinsically secretion deficient. By crossing the RF transgenic mice with the autoimmune MRL/lpr background, we find a dramatic increase, > 200-fold, in levels of serum RF. The results strongly suggest that a major function of normal resting RF B cells is unrelated to antibody secretion. Rather, the RF B cells in the follicles may play a role in antigen presentation and regulation of immune responses to antibody-bound nonself-, and possibly self-antigens. This physiologic role of RF B cells may be disrupted in RF-associated autoimmune disease
Influence of Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia Ablation on Right to Left Inter-atrial Conduction
Background: Radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation is the procedure of choice for the potential cure of atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) with high success rates. We hypothesed that as a result of the close proximity of Koch’s triangle and low inter-atrial septal fibers, the RF ablation applied at this region may result in prolongation of inter-atrial conduction time (IACT).
Methods: RF ablation of AVNRT was performed by conventional technique. IACT was measured before and 20 minutes after RF ablation during sinus rhythm. Number of ablations given and duration of ablation were noted.
Results: The study group was consisted of 48 patients (36 [75%] female, 12 [25%] male, mean age 43.4 ± 14. 5 years). RF ablation was successful in all patients. Mean RF time was 4. 0 ± 3. 3 minutes and mean number of RF was 11. 9 ± 9, 8. The mean IACT was 70.1 ± 9.0 ms before ablation and 84.9 ± 12.7 ms after ablation, which demonstrated a significant prolongation (p<0.001). The prolongation of IACT was very well correlated with the number of (r=0.897, p<0.001) and duration of RF (r=0.779; p<0.001).
Conclusions: RF ablation of AVNRT results in prolongation of IACT. The degree of prolongation is associated with the duration and number of RF ablations given. The relationship between this conduction delay and late arrhythmogenesis need to be evaluated
