Heat Isolators on a Vacuum Flask

    Get PDF
The thing which makes the vacuum flask system useful is the vacuum between the two bottles. Producers of the vacuum flask try to create a perfect vacuum between the two bottles, but it is impossible. Little air goes inside, too. This situation creates my experiment and research question. There are many heat isolators so can there be any material that can be more successful in conserving the temperature of the liquid added than the vacuum flask system? To find an answer to my question, I chose 3 heat isolators (perlite, fire brick and silicone) and put them into the flasks instead of the vacuum. In order to investigate their performance and compare with the vacuum flask system, I planned four experiments. I added to the flasks different liquids, water at the different temperature and water at different amounts and measured the temperatures of the added liquids in different times. According to the results from these 4 experiments, I reach to a conclusion that these isolators couldn’t perform a better performance than vacuum in conserving the temperature of the liquid

To what extent, in the novel ‘The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ by R. L. Stevenson, the good and evil sides of a man is brought to light by the external (social) and internal (psychological) factors and what are the results of this metamorphosis over the psychology of Dr. Jekyll?

Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh in 1850. Stevenson, besides his authorship, was also a well-known poet and a travel-writer. Today, Stevenson is among the authors whose novels are most translated to other languages in the world . ‘Stevenson's characters often prefer unknown hazards to everyday life of the Victorian society.’1 ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ by Robert Louis Stevenson, which is accepted as the best novel of the R. L. Stevenson, first published in 1886 and in a real short time sold nearly 40,000 copies in Britain. The mystery of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is revealed by the testimonies of Dr. Lanyon, Mr. Utterson, Mr. Enfield, and Poole(Jekyll's butler). One day, with the help of Dr. Jekyll’s will, Mr. Utterson (Jekyll's lawyer), finds out that a stranger, named as Mr. Hyde, is the heir of the Dr. Jekyll's heritage. Mr. Utterson first couldn’t realize the fact behind this weird situation despite his wide research about this stranger and conversations with his friend Dr. Jekyll. However a few witnesses who witnessed this man only mention the irritating evil energy that transpires through his being. First Dr. Jekyll states that Mr. Hyde is simply a close friend of his. Then, when Mr. Hyde is suspected of murder

The aim of this extended essay is to state the effects of events taking place and changing life standarts of the main character Lt. Frederic Henry and people around him especially Catherine Barkley in WWI in the novel “Farewell to Arms”. In this essay the effects of war on main character, people who are in close relationship with him and friendships after the war are examined. There are various changes in people’s lives especially the main character himself before and after the war. The situations that the main character Lt. Henry encountered with his friends both in military service and civil life took my interest to write this essay. There are many problems that the main character faced during WWI such as starvation and death of a close friend but these are only the ones that happened when he was in The Italian Army. By depicting those negative situations Ernest Hemingway critisizes war. Interrelational and psychological breakdowns that the characters face are emphasized as a reality of war in this novel. The narrator does not directly express these destructions during WWI. Instead, the narrator communicates ideas via main character Lt. Frederic Henry’s observations and experiences of war. As a person with dual nationality born in the USA, these observations are expository and declared. Thus his experiences of these realities such as feeling of loss, pain and love during WWI are highlighted. During this war, his life considerably changes as he tries to pursuit his love and relocate in order to meet his beloved again but their distress does not end although they escape from Italy to Switzerland. In army, he also gains affinity to violence by hurting people. In this way the protagonist undergoes changes and his life differentiates as well, but is it possible to confront all the problems

This paper focuses on Horace McCoy’s masterpiece They Shoot Horses, Don’t They with regard to the influences of social-economic conditions of the Great Depression period on selected characters. McCoy narrates the story of ordinary people who fell down to the bottom of society in the aftermath of Great Depression; and he creates a masterpiece by narrating the ordinary stories of desperation in an extraordinary storyline, which is of a dance marathon. Robert and Gloria are the main characters examined, their inner talks, dialogues with each other and other competents generate the main line of story and, by this way, socialpsychological mindsets of people who suffered from Great Depression are depicted. In addition to Robert and Gloria couple, Kid, Mattie, Jackie and Mario will also be examined regarding their back stories, present conditions which dragged them into such a desperation and their deformed but still alive hopes and expectations. The existential themes given subtextually enrich the plot as well as it enriches the content of this paper. In this sense, desperation, death, sarcasm and hope could be qualified as the keywords of this paper. In this context, McCoy’s novel gives us a chance to be acquainted with the Great Depression period at a multidimensional level; all characters present us a different and distinctive part of what had been happened. Due to these points, this novel is worthy of study and in this paper the influence of that period on the characters is examined

Investigation the effect of Papaver Rhoeas, Malva Grandfolia, and Carduus Marianus Leaves Extracts on Mild Steel in HCl solution, by using weight loss method and linear polarisation resistance technique

We can say mild steel studied corrodes in hydrochloric acid solutions, and also mild steel corrodes when exposed to a solution of HCl and the rate of corrosion increases as the immersion time increases. Therefore, inhibition effect of Papaver rhoeas, Malva Grandfolia, and Carduus Marianus leaves extract as corrosion safe inhibitors on the mild steel corrosion in hydrochloric acid solution was studied using traditional weight loss method as well as linear polarisation resistance technique. Corrosion inhibition efficiency of Papaver rhoeas, Malva Grandfolia, and Carduus Marianus leaves extracts was evaluated using weight loss measurements for effect of various solution concentrations in 1.0M HCl solution. In addition, linear polarisation method estimating of corrosion rate instantaneously was performed to evaluate both various solution concentration and different HCl concentrations, and different immersion time. It was found that three selected extract of Papaver rhoeas, Malva Grandfolia, and Carduus Marianus leaves reduced the corrosion of mild steel with an efficiency of 96.4 %–97.4 % in 1 M HCl for 24 hours immersion time. The inhibition efficiency of Papaver rhoeas leaves is slightly more than those of Malva Grandfolia, and Carduus. The results of both methods showed that the corrosion rate of mild steel exposed to a solution of hydrochloric acid is decreasing and inhibition yield is growing with the concentration of Papaver rhoeas leaves extract, and the best i effect was obtained as Papaver rhoeas leaves volume reached 80 mL for 24 hours immersion time. I used two methods and one of them is weıght loss and the other is linear polarization and lınear polarization is better than weigtht loss because There are many advantages to linear polarization method. One of them is easy to determine corrosion rate, the other one is corrosion efficiency calculated quickly. To determine corrosion rate at least 24 hours are required for weight loss method. In weight loss method, coupons are used in corrosion measurement only one times. Inhibition efficiency studies of Papaver rhoeas, Malva Grandfolia, and Carduus Marianus leaves extract done with the linear polarization method showed that the inhibition efficiency values generally decreased as the concentration of HCl solution increased

An intellectual man eventually questions the deviations in his society and he is usually astounded by how he is obliged to stand alone in that society. This work specifically focuses on how the shattered values of Modern World lead the intellectual individual to alienation and suffering, with regard to the poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T.S. Elliot. The given imageries, stylistic devices, meanings and some certain references are examined as well, as indications of the suffering of the individual. The essay also includes the historical and social background of American Literature of twentieth century and stresses the relation between the mentioned factors and the attitude of modern men. After World War I, the artistic approach of some certain writers of the mentioned era has been mainly affected by the social changes. The main aim is to study how these changes influenced the poetry of T.S. Elliot; more specifically investigate the indications of that certain state of mind embedded in “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”. As a focus, the research question of this essay suggests concentrating on the topic by taking major themes, linguistics, structures, tone, atmosphere and setting of the poem into consideration. All the mentioned points are discussed in a detailed way in order to determine and comprehend the state of endurance and alienation of modern man. With the help of stylistic devices, language and themes he uses, Elliot demonstrates how he is distressful about the materialistic values of the Modern Era, as well as his personal suffering

TO WHAT EXTENT DID SOCIALISM INFLUENCE THE DEVELOPMENT AND WIDESPREAD OF CHESS IN THE USSR UNTIL ITS COLLAPSE IN 1992 ?

This essay is based on the research question “To what extent did socialism influence the development and widespread of chess in the USSR until its collapse in 1992?” While examining this particular question, firstly the context before the October Revolution will be analysed, when chess was a leisure activity of the wealthy upper class individuals as in Europe. Then, the period between the revolution and World War II will be investigated, in which chess was adopted by the Bolshevik government as a tool of increasing the culture of the public, and was introduced to large masses by state-sponsored campaigns. After that, the Cold War period will be investigated, in which chess was used as a socio-cultural weapon by the Soviet Government and turned into a symbol of the struggle for supremacy of the USSR and the Western Block. After this investigations, the factors which led to the USSR hegemony in chess in the 20th century, which is still continuing in the 21th century by the former Soviet countries are clearly observed. Mainly, those are the state sponsored programmes and tournaments that aided the development and widespread of chess. Another reason is the chess becoming politicised in the USSR to be used as a tool of socialist propaganda and demonstrating the Soviet excellence to the world, which exceeded its limits in the Cold War period when it also became a matter of prestige and was taken more seriously than any other kind of sports. The last reason is the self motivation of the individuals for becoming professional chess players, which had numerous advantages, since chess was seen as a very prestigious profession in the USSR, and many opportunities were involved such as travelling abroad for international tournaments, which was not possible for regular citizens

In this study, the effects of E.F. in 10 and 40 minutes periods every day, in midday and normal room conditions to the plant Cactus suculent was investigated. The E.F. was applied by two plates that are charged by negative and positive charges. After the E.F. application, the plants are carried into chilling colds (-17 ⁰C, 15/21 light/dark), other plants carried to normal conditions . Both plant groups are marked with numbers. All plant groups were exposed to cold 40 minutes after E.F. application. All trials( ten times) are repeated and their results are analysed statistically. This experiment is carried in June-July-August-September months for 105 days in 2009. 10 minutes of E.F. has no differences with the control group in normal conditions but it was observed that they have more lifetime. However, it was observed that 40 minutes of E.F. has inhibitory effects
