    As Gavin Stevens\u27 first appearance in "Smoke" of William Faulkner\u27s Knight\u27s Gambit (a collection of sixmystery stories) shows, we can suppose that Gavin Stevens\u27 original character is based on a detective in a detectivestory. After his first appearance in Knight\u27s Gambit, Gavin deals with racial problems as a lawyer in Light inAugust, Go Down, Moses and Intruder in the Dust. In these works, however, his characterization is similar to thatof Knight\u27s Gambit. In Knight\u27s Gambit, he solves a mystery as a detective and his judgment is accepted asinfallible. Nevertheless, in the other three works whose style is different from a detective story\u27s, Gavin\u27sdetective-like character is not ideally described and his judgment becomes unreliable. In these stories whosethemes are so complicated and socially realistic as racism, it is difficult to solve a problem like a detective in adetective story. In this paper, I would like to look into the figure of Gavin Stevens not only in Light in August, GoDown, Moses and Intruder in the Dust but also in Knight\u27s Gambit, and the interconnection between hisdetective-like character in Knight\u27s Gambit and his role as a spokesman for a Southern community in Light inAugust, Go Down, Moses and Intruder in the Dust

    Because of the different ideas of communication between old and new inhabitants in developed towns, education for disaster prevention is one way for ability improvement of local disaster prevention.So the change of consciousness of students attending a lecture for local disaster prevention was investigated by a questionnaire survey at Ooami-Shirasato Town, Chiba prefecture. To make a map forseismic disaster prevention at local areas by themselves, they again recognized the importance of local disaster prevention, even students with high consciousness. On the other hand, they have someproblems with local disaster prevention. For example, because the number of voluntary organizationsfor disaster prevention at Ooami-Shirasato town is lower than the average number in Chiba prefecture, they feel a necessity to make such a kind of organization. And loneliness of the aging is becoming aproblem at the new town. From the local disaster point of view, it is a serious problem

    The response of the structure subjected to nonstationary random vibration such as earthquake excitation isnonstationary random vibration. Calculation method for statistical characteristics of such a response is complicated.Practical and simplified method to obtain theoretical statistical value is required. Mean square value of the response isusually used to evaluate random response. Integral of mean square value of the response corresponds to total energy ofthe response. In this paper, a simplified calculation method to obtain integral of mean square value of nonstationaryseismic response is proposed. The structure is modeled as a single-degree-of-freedom system. Nonstationary white noiseis used as input. Integral of mean square value is obtained for some value of the damping ration and the natural period. Itis found that the proposed method gives exact value of integral of mean square value of the response

    In the case of the numerical calculation using the analysis method of Nomura and Katsura,good results up to 2.5 or 3.0 wavelength with the double precision or the quadruple precision are able to be obtained, to electromagnetic diffraction by a circular disk of a perfect conductor. The cause of it can be explained by the fact that the numerical calculation is executed with sufficient precision in the calculationprocess. GMP is the library that can execute the numerical calculation by multiple precision in C andC++ language. MPFR, based on GMP, is the supplementary library equipped with the mathematical library functions. GMP++ differs from GMP in terms of the classes. MPFR do not have C++ classinterfaces. So, we have to design new interfaces. The purpose of this study is to investigate the cause ofthe fault results, and alter them to be good results using GMP, MPFR, GMP++ and the new interfaces while the radius of the disk is over 3 wavelengths
