A register-based census: what is the potential for New Zealand?
Some countries, including Finland and Denmark, are now conducting their population censuses using administrative data registers rather than a nationwide survey of households. This information paper describes the main features of a register-based census, and the necessary pre-conditions for this approach. The pre-conditions are: a strong legal basis, public approval, unified identification systems, and comprehensive and reliable register systems developed for administrative needs. The administrative registers would need to include a population register and a national address register. We consider how well-placed New Zealand is for meeting these pre-conditions
Distributed Quantum Computation Based-on Small Quantum Registers
We describe and analyze an efficient register-based hybrid quantum
computation scheme. Our scheme is based on probabilistic, heralded optical
connection among local five-qubit quantum registers. We assume high fidelity
local unitary operations within each register, but the error probability for
initialization, measurement, and entanglement generation can be very high
(~5%). We demonstrate that with a reasonable time overhead our scheme can
achieve deterministic non-local coupling gates between arbitrary two registers
with very high fidelity, limited only by the imperfections from the local
unitary operation. We estimate the clock cycle and the effective error
probability for implementation of quantum registers with ion-traps or
nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers. Our new scheme capitalizes on a new efficient
two-level pumping scheme that in principle can create Bell pairs with
arbitrarily high fidelity. We introduce a Markov chain model to study the
stochastic process of entanglement pumping and map it to a deterministic
process. Finally we discuss requirements for achieving fault-tolerant operation
with our register-based hybrid scheme, and also present an alternative approach
to fault-tolerant preparation of GHZ states.Comment: 22 Pages, 23 Figures and 1 Table (updated references

Programmable Trigger Logic Unit Based on FPGA Technology
A programmable trigger logic module (TRILOMO) was implemented successfully in
an FPGA using their internal look-up tables to save Boolean functions. Up to 16
trigger input signals can be combined logically for a fast trigger decision.
The new feature is that the trigger decision is VME register based. The changes
are made without modifying the FPGA code. Additionally the module has an
excellent signal delay adjustment.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Quantum register based on structured diamond waveguide with NV centers
We propose a scheme of quantum information processing with NV-centers
embedded inside diamond nanostructure. Single NV-center placed in the cavity
plays role of an electron spin qubit which evolution is controlled by microwave
pulses. Besides, it couples to the cavity field via optical photon exchange. In
their turn, neighbor cavities are coupled to each other through the photon
hopping to form a bus waveguide mode. This waveguide mode overlaps with all
NV-centers. Entanglement between distant centers is organized by appropriate
tuning of their optical frequency relative to the waveguide frequency via
electrostatic control without lasers. We describe the controlled-Z operation
that is by one order of magnitude faster than in off-resonant laser-assisted
schemes proposed earlier. Spectral characteristics of the one-dimensional chain
of microdisks are calculated by means of numerical modeling, using the approach
analogous to the tight-binding approximation in the solid-state physics. The
data obtained allow to optimize the geometry of the microdisk array for the
effective implementation of quantum operations.Comment: to be published in Proc. of SPI
The Rise in Female Employment and the Role of Tax Incentives - An Empirical Analysis of the Swedish Individual Tax Reform of 1971
Sweden reached the 2007 OECD average level of female labor force participation already in 1974. Before, but not after, 1971 the average tax rate facing the housewife was a function of the income of her husband. By exploiting a rich register based data source I utilize the exogenous variation provided by the individual tax reform to analyze the evolution of female employment in Sweden in the beginning of the 1970’s. Simulations suggest that employment among married women would have been 10 percentage points lower in 1975 if the 1969 statutory income tax system still had been in place in 1975.female labor supply, income tax reforms
Creative destruction and employee well-being
We examine the effects of establishment- and industry-level labor market turnover on employees’ job satisfaction and perceived job insecurity. Our linked employer-employee panel data contain both information on employees’ subjective well-being and register-based information on job and worker flows. The results show that job destruction and worker outflow measures reduce job satisfaction and, especially, perceived security. These effects are much weaker when the individual-specific fixed effects are taken into account. The evidence also reveals that the establishment-level job and worker flows do not translate into higher wages. These findings speak against the existence of compensating wage differentials for job uncertainty.job flows; worker flows; job satisfaction; perceived security; job instability
