Challenges posed to reformed preaching in a postliterary communicative context In this article the tension field is explored which manifests itself in the natural resistance of the reformed tradition against inclusion of visual elements in preaching on the one hand and the demands posed to the communicative structure of preaching in a postliterary context on the other hand. The need for practical theological theory formation with respect to two particular dimensions is explored, namely: effective and responsible integration of visual elements in the communicative structure of preaching in a postliterary context. The exploration of these two dimensions leads to the formulation of two challenges posed to reformed preaching: a) How may visual elements be introduced “effectively” in the communicative structure of preaching in a way that do not disturb the essential Word event of speaking God’s Word?; and b) How may visual elements be introduced “responsibly” in the communicative structure of preaching without reducing infinite elements to the realm of the finite on the one hand and abstractising life-changing elements to the realm of the unrealised? First steps in answering these challenges on a practice theoretical level will be given in a follow-up article

FILOSOFIE OP POTCHEFSTROOM DIE AFGELOPE EEU (1917-2017) Deel 4: Op die tweesprong?

Three previous articles in this journal reviewed the history of philosophy at Potchefstroom from the beginning of the previous century up to about 2009. In this and the next contribution the writer, acting again as a fly on the wall, provides a peephole on the current situation at the end of 2017. As the subtitle suggests, it seems that Christian philosophy at Potchefstroom has arrived at the cross-roads. Different reasons, like the on-going secularisation of the North West University have contributed to the situation. A cause for differences within the School of Philosophy may also be that lecturers from outside the tradition of a Reformational approach are critical about the traditional Christian philosophical approach of more than a century. Since his viewpoint is one clear example of such an alternative approach the academic training, publications and viewpoint of Prof. Anné H. Verhoef will investigated in detail in a last (fifth) contribution. The present article about the main contours of a Reformational approach in philosophy serves as a necessary background from which the philosophical theology of Verhoef will be analysed and evaluated in the conclusion of this series. A.H.

Six decades of philosophy of education since J. Chris Coetzee – where do we stand today? Approximately six decades have gone by since Professor J. Chris Coetzee first published his “Introduction to the philosophy of education” (the title of which can be translated as “Introduction to general theoretical education”). This article is aimed at explaining how the field of reformational philosophy of education in South Africa has developed during these six decades. The discussion does not follow the pattern of a mere historical review of events in the field. Use is made of recent developments in the fields of the history and sociology of science to explain the condition that philosophy of education in South Africa currently finds itself. Theories about the evolution of science developed by Kuhn, Neurath, Barrow and others are used to explain the nature of the crises experienced in this field of science

Worship as feast or feast as worship? Re-reading an Andrew Murray prizewinner one quarter of a century later. The aim of this contribution is to bring the book Die erediens as fees into discussion with the surrounding culture almost one quarter of a century after its publication. The surrounding culture, we shall call, following Martin Stringer and his so-called discourse of globalisation and consumerism, the feast as worship service. Based on this discussion, our research question pertains to the value of Die erediens as fees for the field of Liturgical Studies today. An answer is attempted by, firstly, sketching the liturgical landscape as well as national and international liturgical-scientific developments in our day and, secondly, providing a liturgical-aesthetical exploration and positioning Die erediens as fees within these developments and exploration.</p

Research into the quandary of learner discipline in South African schools has exposed teacher-educators’ lack of (sufficient knowledge of) efficacious methods of maintaining discipline as a problem. In the relevant scholarly literature, positive discipline has been identified as a method with a proven success record. This article investigates positive discipline more closely. Its main purpose is to provide educators with a number of guidelines through which they may maintain and justify effective discipline. To begin with, a literature review about learner discipline supplies the contextual background to this study. The discussion deals, amongst others, with the disciplinary problems that schools have to contend with. Secondly, the concept “positive discipline” is outlined, with particular attention to its possible trussing in a reformatory approach to and contemplation of education and the state of humanness and of being human. This grounding provides a (pre-) theoretical framework from which the (psychological and philosophical) roots of positive discipline may be evaluated. From the subsequent discussion emerge a number of practical guidelines for the teacher-educator. The purpose of these is to assist with the implementation of positive discipline in his or her classroom. The article concludes with a number of recommendations towards possible further research

In this article the relationship between legal philosophy and legal science is compared with that of a partnership which implies that the partners have distinct reciprocal duties. In such a partnership a reformational approach in legal philosophy has the task of convincing other legal scientists that the former can make a meaningful contribution towards raising the level of legal research and education. This does not mean that legal scientists have to become legal philosophers; they do however, have the responsibility to take cognisance of important basic theoretical insights developed by a reformational legal philosophy. Such an approach could preclude them from attempts to reinvent the legal philosophical wheel, especially if they are prepared to stand on the shoulders of a long array of legal philosophical giants. The application of basic concepts of a reformational legal philosophy should, however, be done in a creative way in order to prevent them from becoming epigones. The danger of legal philosophical systematics becoming an intellectual straitjacket could only be avoided if it remains open (i) towards its own presuppositions, (ii) towards legal reality encompassing positive law and legal principles, (iii) towards other legal theories and (iv) towards other relevant disciplines. Furthermore, the possibility of a secularization of the contributions of a reformational legal philosophy is discussed. In conclusion the need for the acceptance of dynamic supra-arbitrary legal principles and possible contributions of a reformational legal philosophy accepting them, is underlined

To have a good perspective on the philosophy one is practising, some knowledge of its history is a prerequisite. A history of Reformational thought is of equal importance to inspire generations of the future. A beginning was made in 2006 to document the history of the movement for a Reformational Philosophy, started about seventy years ago (1935) in the Netherlands. However, it was a very brief overview and it also does not include a history of this trend of philosophy in South Africa, regarding it more or less as a Dutch “export”. This article will not be able to fill this gap. It is not of a historiographical but of a bibliographical nature. As its title (ad fontes) indicates, the intention is merely to collect some of the original sources or building blocks for an eventual historical evaluation. Apart from an introduction (about the need and the method), it will be done in the following four steps: (1) Something briefly about the cradle of Reformational Philosophy in the Netherlands. (2) The origin, development and representatives of this movement in South Africa (confined to two centra, viz. Bloemfontein and Potchefstroom). (3) Its global geographical dissemination and theoretical application in a variety of disciplines. (4) Since an eventual history will include, apart from the past and the present, also the future, the challenge of the contextualisation of a Reformational philosophy for the African continent concludes the essay

This article proposes an ethics for service delivery. The proposal is framed within the context of a reformed paradigm. The application is in the modern organisation culture. The design for the ethics for service delivery originates in the obedience man has towards the cultural mandate. Obedience generates man to be responsible for and exercise care for people and structures. This forms part of man’s calling in this world. In addition to this, service should be de livered to exercise value-based work, to promote justice and to avoid power abuse. With this in mind, the authors suggest that organisations should consider their actions towards their employees and the customers they serve. In this scenario two aspects are prominent: the ethical behaviour (of employees and employers) and the service rendered to customers. The principles that underlie ethics and service delivery should be entrenched into the culture of an organisation and form part of the acceptable behaviour expected from individuals. Within this epistemology this article provides guidelines for the development of a reformed ethical service delivery approach

The article firstly examines the historical developments related to religious education in Afrikaner education from 1652 - 2004. This is largely done utilizing education laws relating to this subject in the following periods: the first Dutch occupation, the period in the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek before the Anglo Boer War, the period when the Transvaal Colony was in existence, the period during which Christian National Education was in vogue and, lastly, the post 1994 era. Secondly the historical developments in Afrikaner religious education are then related to trends in Western cultural development from the Renaissance. Against this historical background religious freedom in education is then discussed from a reformational Christian perspective
