    Growth Rate of Stony Corals of Broward County, Florida: Effects from Past Beach Renourishment Projects

    The skeletal growth of hermatypic (reef-building) corals is a sensitive indicator of environmental conditions and perturbations. In particular, excessive sedimentation and turbidity act to depress coral growth because energy expenditure is required to remove sediment and because turbidity reduces light energy necessary for coral health and nutrition. Normalized annual growth (linear skeletal extension) rates of Broward County, Florida reef-building corals were over 16 years (1985-1970). Star corals (Montastrea annularis) and brain corals (Diploria labyrinthiformis) were collected from each of four reef sites at two depths (9m and 18m). Collection areas were located in the vicinity of possible adverse sedimentation/turbidity effects from one or more of six past beach renourishment projects. Coral growth differences among sites at particular years and among years within sites were statistically evaluated. Years tested included those of and subsequent to each of six past beach renourishment projects. The results are suggestive that, in general, Broward County beach renourishment projects have had minor or no influence on currently living off-shore corals. However, following the Hollywood-Hallandale renourishment project of 1979, D. labyrinthiformis from the Hollywood 18m site exhibited significantly lower normalized growth compared to other sites. This may not represent effects from the renourishment project. At the Hollywood site M. annularis from both 9m and 18m and D. labyrinthiformis from 9m did not exhibit significantly lowered growth in comparison to other sites. Site averages of absolute coral growth indicated that southern 9m specimens had higher rates of growth than northern counterparts for M. annularis. In the southern collection sites, 9m growth of both species tended to be greater than 18m growth. Correlation analysis indicated that the time pattern of coral growth is similar among sites, species, and depths. Comparison of time series of coral growth data to recorded environmental variables (temperature and salinity) revealed a positive relation with salinity (water density) variations

    Quality control by a mobile molecular workshop: quality versus quantity

    Ribosome is a molecular machine that moves on a mRNA track while, simultaneously, polymerizing a protein using the mRNA also as the corresponding template. We define, and analytically calculate, two different measures of the efficiency of this machine. However, we arugue that its performance is evaluated better in terms of the translational fidelity and the speed with which it polymerizes a protein. We define both these quantities and calculate these analytically. Fidelity is a measure of the quality of the products while the total quantity of products synthesized in a given interval depends on the speed of polymerization. We show that for synthesizing a large quantity of proteins, it is not necessary to sacrifice the quality. We also explore the effects of the quality control mechanism on the strength of mechano-chemical coupling. We suggest experiments for testing some of the ideas presented here.Comment: Final version published in Physical Review

    Demand for traditional ship in Indonesia is very high, because the ship is used of fishermen for catching fish as a livelihood. Shipbuilders as manufactures play an important element in building safety and good traditional wooden ships. In the production process, the shipbuilders must be has proper quality control system, in order to match with the owner specification, regulation, and statutory. Therefore, this article discusses about quality control system in traditional ship production process. The research were conducted by direct survey to traditional shipbuilders in Bintan Island-Indonesia by inspect some ships by visual eyes only. From the survey, it was found many discrepancies occur, such as the use of wood has many defects, knur, knot and cracks. In addition, the wood concatenation process is not perfect, which can cause leakage. From the study, the shipbuilders should conduct quality control using other tools instead of visual technique only

Early detection of breast cancer is the first step in prevention that can be done by women, therefore when one is diagnosed with breast cancer, the appropriate treatment can be performed quickly and accurately. Early diagnosis of breast cancer can be a way of mitigation in preventing breast cancer through the use of mammography. Bureau of Radiology as said by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JHCA) stated that one of the responsibilities of the radiology unit is to control the quality of service which aims to minimize the radiographic image repetition factor; as well as maximizes the quality of radiographic image. Quality control tests are an effort that is needed on the mammography X-ray diagnostics tools. This is done to maintain the quality of expected output. The parameters that are included within the radiation output are the magnitude of current and the voltage of tube that are produced; therefore they remained constant and correspond to the recommended standard. Bureau of Radiological Health, as said by JHCA mentioned that to control the quality of image which will minimize the radiographic image repetition and maximizes the quality of radiographic image. Therefore the radiation output will not be dangerous later. The early stage of the quality control test on the machine was conducted by setting all the filtrations which were placed to capture the x-ray on the x-ray plane tube with minimum value. Then, ionization chamber is placed on the test subject points; right after that the distance between it to the radiation source is noted. The x-ray film is place on a film on the compression table of the patient and the distance between film and the focus point is noted. This is then exposed using a target filter Mo/Mo by setting the current as well as variation the voltage and time. The standard voltage measurements are 20-33kVp. This data is from the observations of time exposure; the output value is then noted. The above procedure is conducted from the minimum voltage to the maximum voltage. The output ray is measured for each voltage. The same procedure is conducted to the target filter Mo/RH. The results obtained are that the greater the input voltage and current will subsequently produce greater doses, therefore the exposure has exceeded the standard limit 0.1 mHy with longer exposure time. The HVL density thickness on the mammography X-ray machine determined the quality of the beam and the doses of x-ray exposure on the mammography machine. The output stability of x-ray beam exposure in the mammography machine mode Mo/Mo still fulfill the standard which is the value of 69

    Conceptual quality modelling and integrated control of combined urban drainage system

    This paper presents the first results of conceptual quality modelling approach oriented to the integrated real-time control (RTC) strategy for urban drainage networks (UDN) and wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) developed in the European project LIFE EFFIDRAIN (Efficient Integrated Real-time Control in Urban Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Plants for Environmental Protection). Model predictive control (MPC) has been selected as a proper RTC to minimize the polluting discharge in case of raining events.
