Dear Brother;
It was Invocavit Sunday and no one had asked me to preach. Theophilus\u27 pulpit is normally wide open, but he had decided to take over himself. (By the way, Theophilus\u27 philosophy of visiting preachers is interesting. He insists that if the chance Circuit Rider (meaning us) is better than he is, his congregation will get a treat; if he is not — as so often happens — Theophilus feels that his congregation will be very glad to see him back in his pulpit on the following Sunday.
Citations of \u27noster\u27 John Pecham in Richard Fleming\u27s Trinity Sunday sermon: evidence for the political use of liturgical music at the Council of Constance
This article examines a sermon for Trinity Sunday that was delivered by Richard Fleming at the Council of Constance in 1417. The author argues that Fleming’s citation of liturgical chant and a homily composed by John Pecham, together with certain external evidence, suggests that he was trying to bolster the reputation of the English Church in order to counter attempts to deprive the English delegation of its status as a ‘nation’ within the council. As such, it constitutes an interesting confluence of pulpit oratory, liturgical music, and ecclesiastical politics at this council
Psychological type and the pulpit : an empirical enquiry concerning preachers and the SIFT method of biblical hermeneutics
A sample of 389 experienced preachers completed a measure of psychological type. They then read Mark 1:29-39 and recorded their evaluations of the four reflections on this passage proposed by Francis (1997) and which were derived from the SIFT method of biblical hermeneutics and liturgical preaching. Three main conclusions are drawn from these data. First, compared with the United Kingdom population norms, preachers within this sample were significantly more likely to prefer introversion, intuition, feeling and judging. Second, preachers were four times more likely to prefer a sensing interpretation of the text rather than a thinking interpretation, emphasising the richness of the narrative rather than facing the theological questions posed by it. Third, there was little evidence to suggest that preachers were less likely to appreciate interpretations consonant with their less preferred or inferior function than those consonant with their most preferred or dominant function. In this sense, the richness of the SIFT method should be accessible to preachers of all psychological types

Acoustic effectiveness of pulpit reflector in churches
Since the 12th century, pulpits and pulpit reflectors (canopies) were widely used in churches. This paper studies the acoustic effectiveness of such devices based on in site measurements (STI and D50) in four (unoccupied) churches with pulpits with and without the canopy. The pulpit reflector can remove the late reflection resulting from a high ceiling and makes possible to improve the listening conditions at medium distance from the pulpit. The pulpit reflector effectiveness decreases and becomes even unfavourable when the height of the ceiling drops (h < 10 m) and when the distance to the speaker increases. The absolute variations of speech intelligibility ratings are generally rather weak (average STI variation from +0.01 to -0.03), but can increase in the presence of an assembly
Preaching to Episodic Ears: Practicing a Dramaturgical Homiletic
This article is a critical attempt to develop a homiletic methodology for preaching to the episodic self of the 21st century. The British philosopher Galen Strawson contends that postmodern people today do not regard themselves as living out their lives in a diachronic or narrative sense, but rather in an episodic-existential sense. This episodic-existential way of perceiving one’s life has recently posed a significant challenge to the current preaching practice that is mostly composed and delivered from the pulpit through a narrative. This article provides a considerate response to that episodic-existential challenge. Specifically, the article proposes a dramaturgical narrative form of preaching, in close collaboration with Paul Tillich’s existential theology, as a creative alternative to the conventional narrative way(s) of preaching
