The future of educational psychology
Educational psychology is airing its anguish in public, and if the assertions of Brown (2010), Coleman and Pine (2010), and Hornby (2010) are to be believed then this professional discipline is indeed in a parlous state. As a psychologist who worked for the old Department of Education's Psychological Service, and subsequently for the Special Education Service and Specialist Education Services, I also think that educational psychology is in trouble. However, the history of occupations is littered with the wrecks of vocations that have become redundant to requirements. At the outset of his paper, Brown 2010 raises the possibility that educational psychologists are a species that may speedily become extinct because of hostile environments, and this parallel with the natural world is another reminder that change happens as circumstances alter
Common-cause failures as major issue in safety of control systems
In order to gain an improvement of safety or availability measures of the safety-relevant control system through employment of redundancy a redundant system has to comply with the requirement on independence of redundant parts. If the requirements on the independence of redundant parts are unfulfilled, then a common-cause failure can directly cause a hazardous state on a system level through its effects on multiple redundant parts. Identification of sources and quantification of the common-cause failure parameters has been proved to be a formidable task. The latter problem, including other major safety-affecting factors lays in the focus of this paper. Our proposed technical safety analysis concept is extended, so now it partially covers elusive problems related to the common-cause failures
Stewardship - PR Star of Library Advancement
Stewardship, a close relative of donor/prospect cultivation, is the ongoing appreciation and provision of information to benefactors and a critical element in institutional advancement. But stewardship is more than appreciation and information. For it to be as effective as possible for library advancement, it must be packaged as public relations at its best. As Robert Wedgeworth indicates throughout his article entitled “Donor Relations as Public Relations...,” there is an inextricable link between stewardship and public relations. At the University Libraries of Notre Dame, we
recognized this some years ago and began to take measured steps toward a comprehensive stewardship package. Our journey is not complete, nor has it been perfectly executed. But our progress has been good and
largely effective, and we are vigilant in honing the former and eliminating the obstacles to the latter
alumno es un elemento activo[Abstract] The reflections that next are presented
they seek to synthesize the principIes that
should endorse a model of orientation professional
current university student The objective would not be to establish
comparisons among the existent models of
professional orientation, but pointing out the
common points that allow to define the orientation
like an educational strategy starting
from an integrative definition.
You points toward a type of professional
orientation sustained in a systemic design
(located in a concrete context), strategic (related
closely with the diagnosis and the intervention)
and humanistic where the student is
an active element
Operator's influence on the safety of the controlled process
An analysis of risks related to controlled process and related hazards identification is an important activity during the development of the safety related control system (SRCS). The mistake of the operational staff during the execution of the safety relevant operations related to controlled process can be the cause of hazard. Influence of the operator on controlled process safety depends on operation mode of the SRCS and on technical safety of the SRCS. This contribution deals with the issue of the safety assessment of the operator effect on the safety of the controlled process
Journalism students and intergenerational change in journalism.
This article presents a response to the question: "Is there more to
journalism education than workforce reproduction through
socialisation to the profession and, if so, what is it?" The
response is developed in two parts. The first presents the findings
of a 2001 study of University of Technology, Sydney journalism
students, their career trajectories and approaches to professional journalism
practice. That study provided the means to identify
different types of students and career aspirations. It found "confident
practice" was a highly prized yet previously unexplored
educational outcome. This finding, in turn, pointed to the need to
reconsider the nature of the relationship between the university
system and the news media. The second part of the article canvasses
existing Australian ideas about professional education in
journalism before introducing new theoretical resources that
offer a more robust means of considering the purpose and significance
of the educational endeavour in relation to both reproduction
and change in journalism. The article argues that the discussion
of intergenerational change in journalism needs to include
the viewpoints of journalism students as key stakeholders in journalism's future, and be mindful of the full gamut of their career
aspirations, the wide range of innovative and critical educational
initiatives found in the journalism curricula they study, and the
educational outcomes they prize most highly
