Gathering preliminary data
Prior to any large-scale basic science or clinical research project being funded, it is important for researchers to gather preliminary data. This is essential for providing evidence for the feasibility of research projects and helping to design larger-scale studies. When gathering preliminary data one needs to consider how many data are required, how this work is to be funded and where and when the data will be generated. Most importantly researchers should ensure that the planned data collection will be meaningful, serve its intended purpose and follow the principles of good clinical practice
Data in Business Process Models. A Preliminary Empirical Study
Traditional activity-centric process modeling languages treat data as simple black boxes acting as input or output for activities. Many alternate and emerging process modeling paradigms, such as case handling and artifact-centric process modeling, give data a more central role. This is achieved by introducing lifecycles and states for data objects, which is beneficial when modeling data-or knowledge-intensive processes. We assume that traditional activity-centric process modeling languages lack the capabilities to adequately capture the complexity of such processes. To verify this assumption we conducted an online interview among BPM experts. The results not only allow us to identify various profiles of persons modeling business processes, but also the problems that exist in contemporary modeling languages w.r.t. The modeling of business data. Overall, this preliminary empirical study confirms the necessity of data-awareness in process modeling notations in general
Pedestrian Traffic Fatalities by State: 2015 Preliminary Data
The number of pedestrian fatalities in the United States increased 19 percent from 2009 to 2014, a period in which total traffic deaths decreased by about 4 percent. In fact, pedestrians now account for the largest proportion of traffic fatalities recorded in the past 25 years. Earlier studies by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), based on preliminary data reported by State Highway Safety Offices (SHSOs), were the first to predict recent increases in pedestrian fatalities.The present study, based on preliminary data from all states and the District of Columbia (DC) for the first six months of 2015, found an increase of 6 percent in the reported number of fatalities compared with the first six months of 2014. After adjusting for anticipated underreporting in the preliminary state data, GHSA estimates there has been a 10 percent increase in the number of pedestrians killed in 2015 compared with 2014. In addition, pedestrian deaths as a percent of total motor vehicle crash deaths have increased steadily from 11 percent in 2005-2007 to 15 percent in 2014. It has been 25 years (1990) since pedestrians accounted for 15 percent of total traffic fatalities. Preliminary data indicate that pedestrians will represent about 15 percent of total fatalities again in 2015
Preliminary results on Ontology-based Open Data Publishing
Despite the current interest in Open Data publishing, a formal and
comprehensive methodology supporting an organization in deciding which data to
publish and carrying out precise procedures for publishing high-quality data,
is still missing. In this paper we argue that the Ontology-based Data
Management paradigm can provide a formal basis for a principled approach to
publish high quality, semantically annotated Open Data. We describe two main
approaches to using an ontology for this endeavor, and then we present some
technical results on one of the approaches, called bottom-up, where the
specification of the data to be published is given in terms of the sources, and
specific techniques allow deriving suitable annotations for interpreting the
published data under the light of the ontology
Foregrounds in the BOOMERANG-LDB data: a preliminary rms analysis
We present a preliminary analysis of the BOOMERanG LDB maps, focused on
foregrounds. BOOMERanG detects dust emission at moderately low galactic
latitudes () in bands centered at 90, 150, 240, 410 GHz. At higher
Galactic latitudes, we use the BOOMERanG data to set conservative upper limits
on the level of contamination at 90 and 150 GHz. We find that the mean square
signal correlated with the IRAS/DIRBE dust template is less than 3% of the mean
square signal due to CMB anisotropy
Higgs Searches and Prospects from LEP2
The status of the search at LEP2 for the Higgs in the Standard Model (SM) and
in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model MSSM) is
reviewed. A preliminary lower limit of 95.5/c^2 at 95% C.L. on the SM Higgs is
obtained after a preliminary analysis of the data collected at sqrt(s)= 189
GeV. For standard choices of MSSM parameter sets, the search for the neutral
Higgs bosons h and A leads to preliminary 95% C.L. exclusion lower limits of
83.5GeV/c^2 and 84.5 GeV/c^2, respectively.Comment: 6 page
