    Controlling skyrmion bubble confinement by dipolar interactions

    Large skyrmion bubbles in confined geometries of various sizes and shapes are investigated, typically in the range of several micrometers. Two fundamentally different cases are studied to address the role of dipole-dipole interactions: (I) when there is no magnetic material present outside the small geometries and (II) when the geometries are embedded in films with a uniform magnetization. It is found that the preferential position of the skyrmion bubbles can be controlled by the geometrical shape, which turns out to be a stronger influence than local variations in material parameters. In addition, independent switching of the direction of the magnetization outside the small geometries can be used to further manipulate these preferential positions, in particular with respect to the edges. We show by numerical calculations that the observed interactions between the skyrmion bubbles and structure edge including the overall positioning of the bubbles are fully controlled by dipole-dipole interactions

    On the Stabilizing Action of Protein Denaturants: Acetonitrile Effect on Stability of Lysozyme in Aqueous Solutions

    Stability of hen lysozyme in the presence of acetonitrile (MeCN) at different pH values of the medium was studied by scanning microcalorimetry with a special emphasis on determination of reliable values of the denaturational heat capacity change. It was found that the temperature of denaturation decreases on addition of MeCN. However, the free energy extrapolation showed that below room temperature the thermodynamic stability increases at low concentrations of MeCN in spite of the general destabilizing effect at higher concentrations and temperatures. Charge-induced contribution to this stabilization was shown to be negligible (no pH-dependence was found); therefore, the most probable cause for the phenomenon is an increase of hydrophobic interactions at low temperatures in aqueous solutions containing small amounts of the organic additive. The difference in preferential solvation of native and denatured states of lysozyme was calculated from the stabilization free energy data. It was found that the change in preferential solvation strongly depends on the temperature in the water-rich region. At the higher MeCN content this dependence decreases until, at 0.06 mole fractions of MeCN, the difference in the preferential solvation between native and denatured lysozyme becomes independent of the temperature over a range of 60 K.     Preferential attachment in the protein network evolution

    The Saccharomyces cerevisiae protein-protein interaction map, as well as many natural and man-made networks, shares the scale-free topology. The preferential attachment model was suggested as a generic network evolution model that yields this universal topology. However, it is not clear that the model assumptions hold for the protein interaction network. Using a cross genome comparison we show that (a) the older a protein, the better connected it is, and (b) The number of interactions a protein gains during its evolution is proportional to its connectivity. Therefore, preferential attachment governs the protein network evolution.     Preferential energization of alpha particles in polar coronal holes at one solar radius above the photosphere

    Heating of polar coronal holes during solar minimum and acceleration of the fast solar wind issuing therefrom lack comprehensive theoretical understanding. Wave particle interactions are considered to have crucial effects on the extreme properties of heavy ions in the collision-less region of the polar coronal holes. In this article, we have presented a novel sensitivity analysis to investigate plasma heating by radio waves at lower hybrid frequencies. We have employed a three fluid Maxwell model comprising electrons, protons, and alpha particles at around two solar radius heliocentric distance in the polar coronal holes and derived a dispersion relation as a thirteenth order polynomial for the frequency. Our model provides indications of preferential heating of alpha particles in comparison with protons by means of lower hybrid instabilities. We have employed the electron velocity and spatial charge distribution as our basic study tools so as to show the effects of alpha proton differential mass and differential perpendicular velocity on the preferential heating of alpha particles.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures.
