Preference-Informed Fairness
We study notions of fairness in decision-making systems when individuals have
diverse preferences over the possible outcomes of the decisions. Our starting
point is the seminal work of Dwork et al. which introduced a notion of
individual fairness (IF): given a task-specific similarity metric, every pair
of individuals who are similarly qualified according to the metric should
receive similar outcomes. We show that when individuals have diverse
preferences over outcomes, requiring IF may unintentionally lead to
less-preferred outcomes for the very individuals that IF aims to protect. A
natural alternative to IF is the classic notion of fair division, envy-freeness
(EF): no individual should prefer another individual's outcome over their own.
Although EF allows for solutions where all individuals receive a
highly-preferred outcome, EF may also be overly-restrictive. For instance, if
many individuals agree on the best outcome, then if any individual receives
this outcome, they all must receive it, regardless of each individual's
underlying qualifications for the outcome.
We introduce and study a new notion of preference-informed individual
fairness (PIIF) that is a relaxation of both individual fairness and
envy-freeness. At a high-level, PIIF requires that outcomes satisfy IF-style
constraints, but allows for deviations provided they are in line with
individuals' preferences. We show that PIIF can permit outcomes that are more
favorable to individuals than any IF solution, while providing considerably
more flexibility to the decision-maker than EF. In addition, we show how to
efficiently optimize any convex objective over the outcomes subject to PIIF for
a rich class of individual preferences. Finally, we demonstrate the broad
applicability of the PIIF framework by extending our definitions and algorithms
to the multiple-task targeted advertising setting introduced by Dwork and
Ilvento
Is Ageism Alive in Date Selection Among Men? Age Requests Among Gay and Straight Men in Internet Personal Ads
We examine 2,400 personal ads from male advertisers collected from the Internet, focusing on age preference by race and sexual orientation. We look at whether advertisers display any age preference in personal ads and whether the preference varies by race and sexual orientation. We find that gay men are more likely than straight men to state an age preference. Also, the preference for younger partners intensified among the older advertisers regardless of race and sexual orientation. Youth is still a treasured commodity in date selection for men. However, some men, especially gay men, prefer more mature partners. At least 20 percent of gay Asian men in all three age groups prefer older partners. Further research is recommended to explore this exception among gay Asian men
Towards an Ontological Modelling of Preference Relations
Preference relations are intensively studied in Economics,
but they are also approached in AI, Knowledge Representation, and
Conceptual Modelling, as they provide a key concept in a variety of
domains of application. In this paper, we propose an ontological foundation
of preference relations to formalise their essential aspects across
domains. Firstly, we shall discuss what is the ontological status of the
relata of a preference relation. Secondly, we investigate the place of preference
relations within a rich taxonomy of relations (e.g. we ask whether
they are internal or external, essential or contingent, descriptive or nondescriptive
relations). Finally, we provide an ontological modelling of
preference relation as a module of a foundational (or upper) ontology
(viz. OntoUML).
The aim of this paper is to provide a sharable foundational theory of
preference relation that foster interoperability across the heterogeneous
domains of application of preference relations
Notes on the larval habitat preference and microdistribution of Potamophylax rotundipennis (Insecta: Trichoptera) in a stream reach of the Börzsöny Mountains (Northern Hungary)
Larval habitat preference of Potamophylax rotundipennis (Insecta: Trichoptera) was examined under natural conditions. The result of this study indicated a high preference for stone to sand and detritus, and preference for the low depth of water. This preference resulted that P. rotundipennis larvae showed a homogenous distribution along the stream-reach, but not across it
Utilizing discovery tools for classrooms: how do librarian attitudes on discovery impact tools they teach?
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the utilization of discovery tools in classrooms with the aim of trying to assess the attitude toward them.
Design/methodology/approach – The methodology adopted in this article is a literature review.
Findings – Despite the author\u27s best efforts to look at the data from all angles, the author found no statistical significance in any of the data pulled from the survey. The author also tested to see if personal preference had any bearing on reference preference and found that there was no statistical significance between personal preference and reference preference. The author removed all responses that said “it depends” and the results showed that there still was no statistical significance between personal preference and reference preference.
Originality/value – Libraries can rebrand their services by utilizing and advocating for discovery tools, but it will only happen if they are willing to make changes on their attitudes toward discovery tools
