Practice-oriented controversies and borrowed epistemic credibility in current evolutionary biology: phylogeography as a case study
Although there is increasing recognition that theory and practice in science are intimately intertwined, philosophy of science perspectives on scientific controversies have been historically focused on theory rather than practice. As a step in the construction of frameworks for understanding controversies linked to scientific practices, here we introduce the notion of borrowed epistemic credibility (BEC), to describe the situation in which scientists, in order to garner support for their own stances, exploit similarities between tenets in their own field and accepted statements or positions properly developed within other areas of expertise. We illustrate the scope of application of our proposal with the analysis of a heavily methods-grounded, recent controversy in phylogeography, a biological subdiscipline concerned with the study of the historical causes of biogeographical variation through population genetics- and phylogenetics-based computer analyses of diversity in DNA sequences, both within species and between closely related taxa. Toward this end, we briefly summarize the arguments proposed by selected authors representing each side of the controversy: the ‘nested clade analysis’ school versus the ‘statistical phylogeography’ orientation. We claim that whereas both phylogeographic ‘research styles’ borrow epistemic credibility from sources such as formal logic, the familiarity of results from other scientific areas, the authority of prominent scientists, or the presumed superiority of quantitative vs. verbal reasoning, ‘theory’ plays essentially no role as a foundation of the controversy. Besides underscoring the importance of strictly methodological and other non-theoretical aspects of controversies in current evolutionary biology, our analysis suggests a perspective with potential usefulness for the re-examination of more general philosophy of biology issues, such as the nature of historical inference, rationality, justification, and objectivity
Liberty University\u27s Lawyering Skills Program: Integrating Legal Theory in a Practice-Oriented Curriculum
Law schools are not preparing lawyers for the practice of law. While modern legal education may teach analytical reasoning, skills training continues to suffer. The lawyering skills program developed by the Liberty University School of Law addresses the need to train lawyers in the practice of law. When seeking to build a top quality law school, Liberty University took seriously the challenge to address the void in legal education, particularly with respect to lawyering skills. The foundational principles of law are infused into the legal curriculum and lawyering skills program. The required substantive law courses are structured to have a relationship with lawyering skills so that they mutually reinforce each other
Systematic case study research : a practice-oriented introduction to building an evidence base for counselling and psychotherapy
Background: Historically, clinical case studies have played a central role in counselling and psychotherapy training and practice, by allowing practitioners to learn about ideas and interventions being developed by colleagues. In recent years, the development of methods for systematic collection and analysis of case data has made it possible for case study research to begin to make a contribution to the evidence base for therapy policy and practice. Aim: This paper provides an overview of the characteristics of rigorous case study research, introduces a set of studies that exemplify these principles, and reviews the relevance of systematic case study inquiry for policy, practice and training. Conclusions: If case study research is to fulfil its potential as a source of research-based knowledge, it is essential for practitioners to publish more systematic case studies that document the range and scope of everyday therapeutic practice. It is also necessary to carry out further research into a variety of methodological issues associated with single-case inquiry, as a means of further developing this approach to practice-based research
Computer-supported laboratory for production-oriented electrotechnical systems
At the electrical engineering department of the K.U.Leuven an education research project was started in October 1997. The target is to develop a powerful environment to teach students to solve practice-oriented problems as they will encounter them in industry furtheron in their career. In order to give a wide use to the developed environment, a close collaboration has been established with three polytechnical engineering institutes. Self-dependence has to be stimulated by creating possibilities for real “hands-on experience”. Such an educational environment implicates time-problems, high investment costs and last but not least safety restrictions. The project contributes to the solution of these problems by using simulation- and softwareenvironments, without loosing the real hands-on feeling
Maximizing Institutional Archives with Limited Resources: A Case Study
This practice-oriented article shares how one small institution on a tight budget without a fulltime archivist leveraged existing resources (human, technological, and physical) to maximize 75 years of institutional archives for a recent milestone alumni reunion. Projects included drafting an institutional history, interviewing long-time members of the institution, organizing photos for display, and providing alumni with access to yearbooks. Special attention is given to the process of creating a 20-minute institutional history video, which premiered at an alumni banquet and was shared with other constituents electronically. There is also a focus on project management and collaborating with coworkers in other departments. Part-time archivists or those who are beginning archival management will gain an approach to tackling projects and creating professional results
