    Baryonic Popcorn

    In the large N limit cold dense nuclear matter must be in a lattice phase. This applies also to holographic models of hadron physics. In a class of such models, like the generalized Sakai-Sugimoto model, baryons take the form of instantons of the effective flavor gauge theory that resides on probe flavor branes. In this paper we study the phase structure of baryonic crystals by analyzing discrete periodic configurations of such instantons. We find that instanton configurations exhibit a series of "popcorn" transitions upon increasing the density. Through these transitions normal (3D) lattices expand into the transverse dimension, eventually becoming a higher dimensional (4D) multi-layer lattice at large densities. We consider 3D lattices of zero size instantons as well as 1D periodic chains of finite size instantons, which serve as toy models of the full holographic systems. In particular, for the finite-size case we determine solutions of the corresponding ADHM equations for both a straight chain and for a 2D zigzag configuration where instantons pop up into the holographic dimension. At low density the system takes the form of an "abelian anti-ferromagnetic" straight periodic chain. Above a critical density there is a second order phase transition into a zigzag structure. An even higher density yields a rich phase space characterized by the formation of multi-layer zigzag structures. The finite size of the lattices in the transverse dimension is a signal of an emerging Fermi sea of quarks. We thus propose that the popcorn transitions indicate the onset of the "quarkyonic" phase of the cold dense nuclear matter.Comment: v3, 80 pages, 18 figures, footnotes 5 and 7 added, version to appear in the JHE

    Evaluating Popcorn as a Potential Refuge of Ostrinia nubilalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)

    Popcorn was evaluated in a series of experiments conducted over four growing seasons for its potential as a refuge for European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner). Objectives of these studies were to determine whether more larvae were produced in popcorn than in field corn and to determine how popcorn influenced female oviposition and larval distribution in neighboring field corn. Two varieties of popcorn (M140, 105d and M3374Y, 118d), one mixture of popcorn (50% 105d and 50% 118d), and field corn (DK580, 108d) were evaluated. Number of egg masses, eggs per egg mass, and larvae were significantly higher in popcorn compared with field corn. Moth oviposition and larval distribution were evaluated using 105d popcorn embedded in several cornfields across Iowa. The row of field corn adjacent to popcorn had significantly more larvae compared with background field corn. In larger field experiments, O. nubilalis larval survival after overwintering was significantly different, with 2.2–18.7 times more O. nubilalis larvae surviving in popcorn than field corn.     Increasing the Size of a Piece of Popcorn

    Popcorn is an extremely popular snack food in the world today. Thermodynamics can be used to analyze how popcorn is produced. By treating the popping mechanism of the corn as a thermodynamic expansion, a method of increasing the volume or size of a kernel of popcorn can be studied. By lowering the pressure surrounding the unpopped kernel, one can use a thermodynamic argument to show that the expanded volume of the kernel when it pops must increase. In this project, a variety of experiments are run to test the validity of this theory.     Household Snack-Food Purchases: Does Nutrition Matter?

    Purchase patterns for two types of snack foods--pretzels and popcorn, and potato, corn, and tortilla chips--were analyzed using the data from a national survey. The study examined the effect of socio-economic and lifestyle factors including nutritional awareness and exercise habits of household respondents on snack-food purchase. A geometric-hurdle count-data model that distinguished between market-participation and purchase-frequency decisions revealed that the decision to participate in the market for snack food was separate from the purchase-level decision. Pretzels and popcorn consumers were unaffected by nutrition consideration of any kind.     The stochastic background from cosmic (super)strings: popcorn and (Gaussian) continuous regimes

    In the era of the next generation of gravitational wave experiments a stochastic background from cusps of cosmic (super)strings is expected to be probed and, if not detected, to be significantly constrained. A popcorn-like background can be, for part of the parameter space, as pronounced as the (Gaussian) continuous contribution from unresolved sources that overlap in frequency and time. We study both contributions from unresolved cosmic string cusps over a range of frequencies relevant to ground based interferometers, such as LIGO/Virgo second generation (AdLV) and Einstein Telescope (ET) third generation detectors, the space antenna LISA and Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTA). We compute the sensitivity (at 2σ2 \sigma level) in the parameter space for AdLV, ET, LISA and PTA. We conclude that the popcorn regime is complementary to the continuous background. Its detection could therefore enhance confidence in a stochastic background detection and possibly help determine fundamental string parameters such as the string tension and the reconnection probability.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures ; revised version after correction of a typo in eq. 4.

    Penelitian dilakukan pada USAha popcorn milik Bapak Syambudin Gampong Geulumpang Payong Kecamatan Jeumpa Kabupaten Bireuen. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kelayakan USAha popcorn di Gampong Geulumpang Payong Kecamatan Jeumpa Kabupaten Bireuen. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada bulan Agustus 2016. Metode analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah dengan menggunakan rumus analisis biaya, pendapatan, keuntungan, Break Even point (BEP), Benefit Cost Ratio (B/C) dan Return of Invesment (ROI). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian diketahui bahwa USAha popcorn di Gampong Geulumpang Payong Kecamatan Jeumpa Kabupaten Bireuen menguntungkan, dengan total keuntungan adalah sebesar Rp. 9.587.975/bulan. Dari perhitungan nilai BEP diperoleh BEP produksi 2,003 bungkus, BEP harga Rp. 1.821/ bungkus, nilai B/C rasio sebesar 1,20 dan nilai ROI sebesar 119,67 %, sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa USAha popcorn di Gampong Geulumpang Payong Kecamatan Jeumpa Kabupaten Bireuen layak untuk diusahakan
