The role of trade literature in the communication system

    Get PDF
Bibliometric methods in general undervalue technological research. This study examines the relation in literature between technological/industrial journals and scientific journals in the case of the plastics industry and polymer science. Trade-journals cannot be used in a straightforward bibliometric manner, but can be an aid in mapping the different groups and reveal the lsquohiddenrsquo communication between technological and scientific communities

Development of a metalised carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) antenna reflector for satellite communication

    Get PDF
The Antenna reflectors made of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) are used in spacecrafts for Satellite Communication in C, S and Ku bands. For futuristic Satellite Communication applications in x2018;Kax2019; band, there is a need of improving the reflectivity for Radio Frequency (RF) signals by metallising the surface of CFRP reflectors. The space qualified CFRP reflectors have been developed by ISRO for various GEOSAT projects but the process for developing a space qualified reflector having a metallized surface has not been established in the country. Recently, efforts in this hither to fore unexplored domain have been made jointly by Space Application Center, Ahemadabad and National Aerospace lab, Bangalore to develop reflectors with metallized surface

Aggregate and sector-specific exchange rate indexes for the Portuguese economy

    Get PDF
Economic theory and empirical evidence suggest that fluctuations in exchange rates may have strong reallocation effects. Accession to the Exchange Rate Mechanism in 1992, and then to the European Monetary Union in 1999, implied a drastic change in the behaviour of Portugal's exchange rate indexes. The analysis of those indexes is therefore bound to play an important role in the study of the evolution of the Portuguese economy in the last two decades. However, there are many alternative exchange rate indexes. In this paper, we compute and compare aggregate and sector-specific exchange rate indexes for the Portuguese economy. We find that alternative effective exchange rate indexes are very similar between them. We also find that sector-specific effective exchange rates are strongly correlated with aggregate indexes. Nevertheless, we show that sector-specific exchange rates are more informative than aggregate exchange rates in explaining changes in employment: whereas aggregate indexes are statistically insignificant in employment equations, regressions using sector-specific exchange rate indexes show a statistically significant and economically large effect of exchange rates on employment.exchange rates, international trade, employment, EMU.

On the gravitation and convergence of industry incremental rates of return in OECD countries

    Get PDF
The hypotheses of sectoral incremental rates of returns gravitating around or converging towards a common value are tested on data for various OECD countries relying on an econometric method able to account for residual autocorrelation and cross-sector correlation. Our null hypotheses receive only a mixed empirical support. This is interpreted as the result of limitations to capital mobility and of persistent differentials in the innovative performance of industries.capital mobility, gravitation, convergence, incremental rates of returns, SURE estimation, exactly median unbiased estimator

Two quantative scenarios for the future of manufacturing in Europe

    Get PDF
This paper presents two scenarios for the future of manufacturing in Europe with varying trends in globalisation, technological progress and energy efficiency. From these scenarios, we conclude that the trend towards a services economy is likely to continue with employment shifting away from manufacturing towards services. However, manufacturing production still grows and is important for trade in Europe. The sectors which are already the most open ones for international trade are also the ones mostly affected by this trend. These include chemicals, rubber and plastics, the combined machinery and equipment sectors, textiles and wearing apparel, and wood and other manufacturing. R&D policies and internal market policies in Europe can have strong positive impact on manufacturing. These policies do not alter the trend that Europe's share in global production and trade will continue to decline, but they do mitigate the overall decline, in particular in the chemicals, rubber and plastics, and combined machinery and equipment sectors.

High performance computing of explicit schemes for electrofusion jointing process based on message-passing paradigm

The research focused on heterogeneous cluster workstations comprising of a number of CPUs in single and shared architecture platform. The problem statements under consideration involved one dimensional parabolic equations. The thermal process of electrofusion jointing was also discussed. Numerical schemes of explicit type such as AGE, Brian, and Charlies Methods were employed. The parallelization of these methods were based on the domain decomposition technique. Some parallel performance measurement for these methods were also addressed. Temperature profile of the one dimensional radial model of the electrofusion process were also given
