    An Analysis of materials suitable for use as a pitfall trap in a desert environment

    The purpose of this study is to identify a type of pitfall trap container that can withstand the temperature extremes of the Mojave Desert in which the terrestrial, or above ground, drift fence with pitfall traps will be utilized for trapping reptiles. A pitfall trap is a container, such as a plastic bucket with a plastic lid, that is buried in the ground up to the lip of the bucket and used to catch small ground dwelling fauna that fall into the trap. Many different pitfall trap materials have been utilized in the trapping of small ground-dwelling fauna. Plastic has been the most common material used in pitfall trap containers, or buckets, in many different climates around the world. However, plastic is probably a very inefficient material for pitfall trap containers utilized in a desert environment due to extremely dry conditions and extreme temperature fluctuations. Pitfall trap containers have been used for trapping small ground-dwelling fauna in many regions of the world.     Growth response and survival of F1 hybrid fry of Heterobranchus longifilis and Clarias gariepinus reared in glass aquaria and plastic basins

    The growth response of F1 hybrid fry of female Heterobranchus longifilis and male Clarias gariepinus were investigated under laboratory conditions in glass aquaria glass tanks and plastic basins. The larvae were produced artificially after inducement with Ovarptim. The hatching percentage was very high. Weekly mean length and weight were monitored for 6 weeks. The average length increase was higher in aquaria glass tanks than in plastic basins. However, there were depressed and irregular weight increases in both types of rearing troughs while significant weight increase (P<0.05) was recorded at week 6 in the plastic basin.     The adoption by farmers of Good Agrarian Practices (GAP), that favouring the environment and assure food quality and safety, is being a frequent fact. Considering the plastic covered horticulture, these kind of practices can be of different nature: use of organic fertiliser, made of crops rotations, use of recyclable plastic as greenhouse cover, good management of organic residuals (use of containers), recycling of plastic containers, etc. This paper, wich try to analyse the adoption of GAP by protected vegetable growers, is based on a survey carried out to 114 farmers in the southeast coastline of Spain, asking for the level of adoption of a set of GAP. From the information gathered on the suvey, an aggregated index of adoption has been performed, and the relationship between this index and some structural and managerial characteristics of the greenhouses, and some sociocultural variables of the growers (age, study, agrarian formation, etc) has been analysed, trying to identify factors related to adoption of GAP, which could probably help to design strategies for the increase of the level of GAP adoption in the system.Crop Production/Industries,

Cocoa seeds can not be dried below the critical water and not tolerant of low temperatures. Shipping cocoa seeds for long distances requires packaging and storage of seeds baikuntuk maintain its growth or seed viability remains high until the time comes for planting.This research has been carried out in the Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Batanghari Basics about 3 months from February 2014 until June 2014.This study used a completely randomized design environment consisting of a single factor, with the provision of treatment osmoticum PEG-6000 in the cocoa seeds are packaged in HDPE plastic ventilated 10%, with the level of brand osmoticum PEG-6000 as follows: P0 Without osmoticum packed in ventilated plastic 10 %, P1, osmoticum concentration of 15% in ventilated plastic containers in 10%, 30% P2 osmoticum concentration in ventilated plastic containers in 10%, 45% P3 osmoticum concentration in ventilated plastic containers in 10%.Treatment osmoticum PEG-6000 with 45% concentration can inhibit seed germination until day 21 of 9.67 and viability of seeds stored and vigornya still in good condition. Osmoticum PEG-6000 treatment with several concentrations of the cocoa seed parameters significantly affect the percentage of seed germination and the percentage of moldy seed in storage, but no real effect on germination percentage, vigor index and germination rate after storage

    Discussions concerning the socio-environmental harms and the inadequacies of effectively recycling plastics are now well rehearsed. These issues are counterbalanced by plastic’s enormous versatility and low production costs. To enable plastic to remain a useful material its inability to degrade needs to be addressed. Current practice almost forces consumers to purchase non-recyclable containers if they want to benefit from the contents. Governments should support moves away from recycling towards biodegradable with regards plastic containers. The following is a summary of the perspectives of approximately 80 young people studying Anthropology at undergraduate level with regards plastic consumption and consumer choice. The information results from 3 years of informal qualitative data collection. This document first describes the courses and then culminates with the students’ suggestions for the future that arose from their research. It also demonstrates the apprehensions young people have towards plastic bottles, cups and other non-biodegradable containers

    The characteristics of retail wastes in the city of Yenagoa, Nigeria

    &lt;p class="EbiBody"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Wastes management is a clear strategy where wastes are channelled through processes that ensures proper storage, collection, transportation, treatment and disposal of wastes with ample consideration for environmental protection and public health. In Yenagoa where the current study was conducted, the lack of proper wastes management structure is apparent, particularly among retailers where samples were drawn from for the study. Little is known on the volume and characteristics of wastes produced by the retail sector in the city, like many other Nigerian cities.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="EbiBody"&gt;The study employed a mixed method approach using closed and open-ended questionnaires in collecting data. In all about 900 questionnaires were collected and analysed for the study. Knowing that no proper waste management plan can be developed until the current practice, sources, components and volume of waste has been well understood. The use of qualitative methods in this paper helps to better understand and gather data on areas of interest. A multi stage cluster sampling technique was employed due to the unavailability of an up-to-date sampling frame in the area.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="EbiBody"&gt;The findings from the study show that wastes materials produced by retailers in Yenagoa are mainly wastes paper, tins, cans, plastics, cardboard, furniture, wood products and possibly WEEE. However, plastics and cardboard materials were the dominant wastes materials produced by the retail sector. The study therefore concludes that there is a need to establish a wastes processing facility in Yenagoa with heavy emphasis on recycling.&lt;/p&gt;</jats:p

    Lignocellulosic Recycled Materials to Design Molded Products: Optimization of Physical and Mechanical Properties

    The object is to contribute to the reduction of environmental pollution, by reusing a fraction of urban solid waste, forestry and agroindustrial waste: newspaper (ONP), office paper (OWP), corrugated cardboard (OCC), pine sawdust, eucalyptus sawdust and sugar cane bagasse as raw material to design biocontainers suitable for growing plants, by applying pulp molding technology. The purpose is to evaluate the effects of the combination of these lignocellulosic materials on the physical-mechanical properties and optimize responses in order to select an ideal mixture on basis the product?s necessities. An experimental design of type mixture of extreme vertices was followed, considering secondary fibers as base material, in a 0-100% proportion, and pine sawdust, eucalyptus sawdust and bagasse fibers as reinforcement, in a 0-40% proportion. An experimental matrix by each reinforcing material was proposed. Properties were evaluated: density, tensile, bursting, tearing, compression, stiffness, wet tensile, permeability and water retention, testing handsheets weighing 150 g/m2. Responses were optimized using a statistical program. It was found that OWP pulps increase strength properties; OCC pulps increases tear and wet tensile; ONP pulps increase stiffness and reinforcement materials increase permeability.     Collection of broodstock and juveniles of Macrobrachium vollenhovenii from the wild

    A total of 457 broodstock and 143,000 juveniles of Macrobrachium vollenhovenii were collected at Isheri Olofin area and Okunmanya River over a period of time. They were transported live to the shrimp hatchery of NIOMR in Lagos. Live transportation of the broodstock of M.vollenhovenii with body weight ranging from 71.0-264.5g in liter-capacity plastic containers half-filled with water, recorded 98-100% survival rate between 80-110 minutes transportation time. However, live transportation of the juvenile in 50 liters capacity plastic containers without water recorded survival rates ranging from 20-66% while those carried with water and aerated recorded 12.5-93.75%. An air conditioned vehicle was used during the live transportation. Higher mortality rate was recorded for the juvenile than the broodstocks due to large number transported in additoin to the small-size gear used for trapping the jiveniles. The study has developed a simple technology for the collection and transportation of live specimens of broodstock and juveniles of M. vollenhovenii. Efforts will be made to increase survival of the juveniles through the use of larger containers and gears
