    Integrated pest management of black weevil in banana cropping systems

    The black weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Coleoptera: curculionidae) is a major pest of banana in export farms and for smallholders in developing countries. New Integrated Pest Management strategies include the implementation of prophylactic cropping practices and the use of pheromone-pitfall traps. The combined use of pheromone-pitfall traps and fallows reduces the number of C. sordidus adults in the field and has significantly reduced insecticide use in the French West Indies and in the Canary Islands. Because of the patchy distribution of C. sordidus and the capabilities of weevils to invade neighbouring fields, these methods should be deployed at the farm and landscape scale, with special focus on their spatial and temporal organisation. To further refine the Integrated Pest Management of this pest in the longer term, we are evaluating biocontrol agents and modelling tools developed to simulate the spatial organisation of traps at the plot and landscape scales.     A Comparison of the Effectiveness of Pitfall Traps and Winkler Litter Samples for Characterization of Terrestrial Ant (Formicidae) Communities in Temperate Savannas

    Relatively few studies in temperate environments have compared pitfall traps and Winkler litter samples, two of the most commonly used ant (Formicidae) sampling protocols. Most of the comparative work has been performed in tropical and subtropical environments. Temperate studies have primarily taken place in forested environments. Our study focuses on the relative efficiency of these two methods in temperate oak savannas, the major ecotone connecting grasslands and deciduous forest in the Midwest. These environments are often maintained by fire and mechanical brush removal, which tends to decrease the amount of available leaf litter. We sampled 21 sites, varying in age since restoration from un-restored to 22 years of restoration activities in McHenry Co. Illinois. Each site was sampled with 30 pitfall traps and five Winkler litter samples. A total of 38 species in 17 genera in 5 subfamilies were captured and identified. Pitfall traps accounted for 37 of the species, while Winkler litter samples only captured 23 species, and only one species specific to that method. We conclude that in northern temperate savannas, pitfall traps were more effective and more efficient at characterizing the epigeic ant community than Winkler litter samples

    Pitfall traps with above-ground silhouettes of various colors and diameters were used in field tests to evaluate the role of vision in host orientation by adult pales weevils, Hylobius pales, and pitch-eating weevils, Pachylobius picivorus. White traps (11 em outer diameter) baited with ethanol and turpentine caught significantly more weevils than similarly baited black or green traps (11 cm outer diameter). Trap diameter (range of 6-22 cm outer diameter) did not affect trap catch. Pitfall traps can be used to monitor root weevil populations in young pine plantations and Christmas tree farms, where they are major pests. These results demonstrate that visual and chemical cues can be integrated to improve trap efficiency

    Pitfall traps baited with ethanol and turpentine serve as an effective tool for monitoring pales weevil (Hylobius pales) populations. Males and females are equally attracted to this bait. Neither component alone showed any attractiveness. The presence of a pine stem for weevil feeding does not affect the number or sex ratio of captured weevils. The potential of using attraction to baited traps as a sampling method for pales weevil is discussed

    Saproxylic beetles in hollow trees : a comparison of three trap types

    Vanhat ja ontot puut ovat tärkeä elinympäristö monelle lahopuusta riippuvaiselle eliölajille. Onttoihin puihin on erikoistunut suuri määrä myös vaarantuneita ja harvinaisia hyönteislajeja, jotka elävät puun onkalon seinämillä tai onkalon pohjalle kerääntyvässä orgaanisessa aineksessa, ns. mulmissa. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää, mikä kolmesta pyydystyypistä (ikkuna-, vuoka- ja kuoppapyydys) soveltuu parhaiten onttojen puiden lahopuukovakuoriaisten pyyntiin. Lisäksi tavoitteena oli kartoittaa hyönteisnäytteiden ensimmäiseen laboratoriokäsittelyyn vaadittua aikaa. Tutkimuksessa oli mukana vanhoja rungostaan onttoutuneita lehmuksia, tammia ja vaahteroita pääkaupunkiseudun puisto- ja kartanoalueilta. Puiden onkaloiden sisään aseteltiin ikkuna-, vuoka- ja kuoppapyydyksiä, kaksi kutakin tyyppiä ja ne tyhjennettiin kolmen viikon välein touko-heinäkuussa 2006. Pyydyksiä oli siis yhteensä 90 per pyyntijakso. Kun näytteistä eroteltiin halutut hyönteislahkot (mukaanlukien kovakuoriaiset) niiden käsittelyyn käytetty aika kirjattiin ylös. Aineistosta tunnistettiin yhteensä 3825 kovakuoriaisyksilöä ja 212 lajia, joista lahopuusta riippuvaisia oli yhteensä 3398 yksilöä ja 121 lajia. Ikkunapyydyksissä esiintyi yhteensä 1639 yksilöä ja 140 lajia, vuokapyydyksissä 1506 yksilöä ja 134 lajia, kuoppapyydyksissä 680 yksilöä ja 111 lajia. Näytteiden käsittelyaikojen keskiarvot olivat 48,3 minuuttia ikkunapyydykselle, 65,5 minuuttia vuokapyydykselle ja 34,1 kuoppapyydykselle. Lajistokoostumuksen huomioiva ?-diversiteetti erosi huomattavasti pyydysten välillä, se oli 36,5 % ikkuna- ja vuokapyydysten välillä, 13,1 % ikkuna- ja kuoppapyydysten välillä ja 14,2 % vuoka- ja kuoppapyydysten välillä. Ikkuna- ja vuokapyydysten välillä ei havaittu tilastollisesti merkitsevää eroa saproksyylilajien (p<0,05), -yksilöiden (p<0,05) tai käsittelyaikojen (p<0,05) keskiarvoissa. Ikkuna- ja vuokapyydyksillä saatiin keskimäärin selvästi enemmän saproksyylilajeja ja –yksilöitä kuoppapyydykseen verrattuna. Kuoppapyydyksellä saatiin kokonaisyksilömäärään verrattuna suhteellisesti vähemmän saproksyylejä (59 %) kuin ikkuna- (69 %) ja vuokapyydyksillä (71 %). Ikkunapyydykset olivat tehokkain pyydystyyppi vertailtaessa pyydysten keräämää saproksyyliyksilömäärää suhteessa aineiston käsittelyn vaatimaan aikaan. Tehokkuus (yksilöä minuutissa) ikkunapyydykselle oli 0,74, vuokapyydykselle 0,43 ja kuoppapyydykselle 0,21. Ikkunapyydyksiä ei ole aikaisemmin käytetty puun onkalon sisällä hyönteisiä pyydettäessä vaan ne ovat aikaisemmissa tutkimuksissa roikkuneet onkalon ulkopuolella. Ikkunapyydykset kuitenkin toimivat erinomaisesti myös onkaloiden sisällä. Ikkuna- sekä vuokapyydys toimivatkin selkeästi paremmin lahopuukovakuoriaisten pyynnissä verrattuna kuoppapyydykseen, jonka poisjättäminen olisi kuitenkin tuottanut huomattavasti lajiköyhemmän aineiston. Mahdollisimman monimuotoisen onttojen puiden lahopuukovakuoriaislajiston keräämiseksi tulisi käyttää ikkuna- tai vuokapyydyksiä yhdessä kuoppapyydysten kanssa.Old hollow trees are an important habitat for many saproxylic species. A number of threatened and rare insects are specialized on tree hollows and live in the walls of cavities or in the loose wood mould accumulating in the bottom of the hollow. In this study, I compared the species richness and composition of Coleoptera in hollow trees caught with three trap types, window, aluminium foil and pitfall traps. Furthermore, I compared the time spent handling each sample of the different trap types, when sorting all insect orders (including Coleoptera) from the material. The material was gathered in parks and mansion areas in the Helsinki metropolitan area. Window, foil and pitfall traps were placed inside cavities of Tilia cordata, Acer platanoides and Quercus robur trees. In each tree two of each trap type was placed, i.e. six traps per tree, making a total of 90 traps. The traps were emptied every third week during May to July 2006. When the samples were sorted for the first time to separate different insect orders, the duration of time spent sorting each sample was documented. A total of 3825 Coleoptera individuals from 212 species were caught, of which 3398 individuals from 121 species were saproxylic. Window traps caught 1639 individuals from 140 species, foil traps caught 1506 individuals from 134 species, and pitfall traps caught 680 individuals from 111 species. The time spent sorting each sample was on the average shortest with pitfall traps and longest with aluminium foil traps. The ?-diversity (species composition and abundance) differed between the three trap types. The ?-diversity between window and foil, window and pitfall, and foil and pitfall traps was 37%, 13% and 14% respectively. In addition for the average number of saproxylic beetle species and individuals, the average time spent sorting each sample differed statistically significantly between window and pitfall traps (p<0,05), and foil and pitfall traps (p<0,05). Window and foil traps caught, on the average, clearly more saproxylic species and individuals as compared with pitfall traps. Pitfall traps also caught, on the average, less saproxylic beetles out of total beetle individuals (59%) than window (69%) and foil traps (71%). Window traps were the most efficient conserning the average number of saproxylic beetle individuals in relation to the average time spent sorting each sample. Efficiency value (individuals/minute) for each trap type was 0,74 for window, 0,43 for aluminum foil and 0,21 for pitfall traps. Window traps have never before been used inside tree hollows, they have only been used to collect insects outside the cavities. However they functioned outstandingly inside the cavities. In this study pitfall traps were clearly outperformed by window and foil traps, still many species, even some threatened ones, would have been lost without them. To achieve as diverse a species composition as possible it is recommended to use either window or foil traps parallel with pitfall traps

    Effects of Aprons on Pitfall Trap Catches of Carabid Beetles in Forests and Fields

    This study compared the efficacy of three types of pitfall traps in four forest and two field habitats. Two traps had aprons and one did not. The two apron traps were the same except for a gap between the trap and the plywood-apron, allowing captures from above or below. Traps were placed in a split-plot design and had three replicates of the three trap types per habitat. The traps were emptied each week from May to September. ANOVA\u27s were performed on 12 trapped species separately over habitats, weeks, and the in- teractions between them. The nonapron trap captured over 40% more individuals than either apron trap, though apron traps tended to be more effective in fields for species found in both habitats.     An Annotated Checklist of Wisconsin Handsome Fungus Beetles (Coleoptera: Endomychidae)

    The first comprehensive survey of Wisconsin Endomychidae was initiated in 1998. Throughout Wisconsin sampling sites were selected based on habitat type and sampling history. Wisconsin endomychids were hand collected from fungi and under tree bark; successful trapping methods included cantharidinbaited pitfall traps, flight intercept traps, and Lindgren funnel traps. Examination of literature records, museum and private collections, and field research yielded 10 species, three of which are new state records. Two dubious records, Epipocus unicolor Horn and Stenotarsus hispidus (Herbst), could not be confirmed.     Red Flour Beetle Response to Traps with Prior Captures

    The red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) is a major pest of food facilities such as flour mills and is often monitored using pitfall type traps with a food oil and pheromone attractant. Previous research had indicated that prior captures of beetles could increase beetle behavior captures in a trap. Here we used a more realistic bioassay to evaluate how the number of beetles previously captured include beetle captures in traps. Results showed no significant impact of prior captures on the number of red flour beetles captured in a trap. There were some trends suggested in the results that warrant further study to investigate, perhaps by focusing on individual beetle behavior at traps rather then using groups of beetles
