    Computational Literary Genre Stylistics

    Get PDF
The project in a nutshell: This project will investigate the relation between literary genres (generic facets) and style (stylistic attributes). Analyses are based on large collections of literary texts and use or develop state-of-the-art methods in computational stylistics and text analysis. This will enable the project to combine attention to minute stylistic details with the investigation of large trends and patterns in literary history. What does the project aim to accomplish? The project brings together scholars from Romance Philology and Computer Scientists, building a common ground in Computational Philology. It aims to change the way we think about the concepts of genre and style as well as about the relation between literary interpretation and computation. In particular, the project aims to strengthen the engagement with digital methods in Romance Philology

Democracy and the Vernacular Imagination in Vico’s Plebian Philology

    Get PDF
This essay examines Giambattista Vico’s philology as a contribution to democratic legitimacy. I outline three steps in Vico’s account of the historical and political development of philological knowledge. First, his merger of philosophy and philology, and the effects of that merge on the relative claims of reason and authority. Second, his use of antiquarian knowledge to supersede historicist accounts of change in time and to position the plebian social class as the true arbiters of language. Third, his understanding of philological knowledge as an instrument of political change, and a foundational element in the establishment of democracy. By treating the philological imagination as a tool for bringing about political change, Vico’s plebian philology is radically democratic, and a crucial instrument in the struggle against the elite, from antiquity to the present

    Home Video Philology: Methodological Reflections

    Get PDF
Digital home video is an extremely useful means of watching and analyzing films. However, scholars often neglect the fact that official home video or streaming releases of a film can have differences from the original version of the film itself. Such variances typically are lack of film grain (resulting from digital noise reduction), differences in color grading, and soundtrack remixing. This can depend on the fact that the technicians who work on home video releases are unprepared, or are instructed to adjust the look and the sound of the film to the current taste, or because the filmmakers changed their mind and requested some modifications. At any rate, film scholars must be aware of such possible inconsistencies, otherwise their study could be fallacious. In this article I discuss upon philological problems of home video releases mainly from a practical point of view

Automatic alignment has important applications in philology, facilitating study of texts on the basis of electronic resources produced by different scholars. A simple technique is presented to realise such alignment for Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic texts and transliteration. Preliminary experiments with the technique are reported, and plans for future work are discussed.Postprin

Did Philologists write the Iliad? : Friedrich August Wolf's criteria of style and the demonstrative power of citation

    Get PDF
Friedrich August Wolf posits in his "Prolegomena ad Homerum" that, from the time of the first transcription of Homer's epics around 700 BC to the time of the Alexandrian editions, the Iliad and Odyssey underwent repeated revisions by a multitude of poets and critics. According to Wolf, the "unified" works that we know are the products of emendations by Alexandrian critics who attempted to homogenize the style of the epics and to return them to their "original" form. This paper argues that Wolf's narration of the history of these texts relies on and produces aesthetic claims, not historical ones. Wolf determines the dates and origins of passages based on intuitive judgments of style for which he cannot provide linguistic or historical evidence. And his conclusions that the "Iliad" and "Odyssey" were not written by Homer, but rather by a history of emendations and revisions, enthrones his work — the work of philologists — in place of the literary genius Homer. Thus philology becomes for Wolf an aesthetic discipline that produces canonical and beautiful works of literature. This aesthetic task is essential for philology to fulfill its educational and political responsibilities
