Education and Responsiveness: On the Agency of Intersubjectivity
In typical monotransitive verbs, such as "to touch," the patient is a passive recipient of action. In this paper, I discuss a special class of monotransitive verbs in which the patient is not, and cannot be, just a passive recipient of action. These verbs, such as "to educate," hinge on intersubjective experience. This intersubjectivity throws a wrench into classical descriptions of grammatical transitivity, transforming the recipient of action from a passive patient receiving the action into an active agent accepting the action. As such, light is thrown on other "intertransitive" verbs and the experiences they describe, with special attention paid to education
South Atlantic continental margins of Africa: a comparison of the tectonic vs climate interplay on the evolution of equatorial west Africa and SW Africa margins
The comparative review of 2 representative segments of Africa continental
margin: the equatorial western Africa and the SW Africa margins, helps in
analysing the main controlling factors on their development. Early Cretaceous
active rifting S of the Walvis Ridge resulted in the formation of the SW Africa
volcanic margin. The non-volcanic rifting N of the Walvis ridge, led to the
formation of the equatorial western Africa margin, with thick and extensive,
synrift basins. Regressive erosion of SW Africa prominent shoulder uplift
accounts for high clastic sedimentation rate in Late Cretaceous - Eocene, while
dominant carbonate production on equatorial western Africa shelf suggests
little erosion of a low hinterland. The early Oligocene climate change had
contrasted response in both margins. Emplacement of the Congo deep-sea fan
reflects increased erosion in equatorial Africa, under the influence of wet
climate, whereas establishment of an arid climate over SW Africa induced a
drastic decrease of denudation, and thus reduced sedimentation on the margin.
Neogene emplacement of the African superswell beneath S. Africa renewed onshore
uplift on both margins, but it accelerated erosion only in the Congo catchment,
due to wetter climate. Neogene high sedimentation rate reactivated
gravitational tectonics that had remained quiescent since late Cretaceous

Increases in government spending trigger substitution effects—both inter- and intra-temporal—and a wealth effect. The ultimate impacts on the econ- omy hinge on current and expected monetary and fiscal policy behavior. Studies that impose active monetary policy and passive fiscal policy typically find that government consumption crowds out private consumption: higher future taxes cre- ate a strong negative wealth effect, while the active monetary response increases the real interest rate. This paper estimates Markov-switching policy rules for the United States and finds that monetary and fiscal policies fluctuate between ac- tive and passive behavior. When the estimated joint policy process is imposed on a conventional new Keynesian model, government spending generates positive consumption multipliers in some policy regimes and in simulated data in which all policy regimes are realized. The paper reports the model’s predictions of the macroeconomic impacts of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s implied path for government spending under alternative monetary-fiscal policy combina- tions.

Passive and active seismic isolation for gravitational radiation detectors and other instruments
Some new passive and active methods for reducing the effects of seismic disturbances on suspended masses are described, with special reference to gravitational radiation detectors in which differential horizontal motions of two or more suspended test masses are monitored. In these methods it is important to be able to determine horizontal seismic accelerations independent of tilts of the ground. Measurement of changes in inclination of the suspension wire of a test mass, relative to a direction defined by a reference arm of long period of oscillation, makes it possible to carry this out over the frequency range of interest for earth-based gravitational radiation detectors. The signal obtained can then be used to compensate for the effects of seismic disturbances on the test mass if necessary. Alternatively the signal corresponding to horizontal acceleration can be used to move the point from which the test mass is suspended in such a way as to reduce the effect of the seismic disturbance and also damp pendulum motions of the suspended test mass. Experimental work with an active anti-seismic system of this type is described
COCrIP: Compliant OmniCrawler In-pipeline Robot
This paper presents a modular in-pipeline climbing robot with a novel
compliant foldable OmniCrawler mechanism. The circular cross-section of the
OmniCrawler module enables a holonomic motion to facilitate the alignment of
the robot in the direction of bends. Additionally, the crawler mechanism
provides a fair amount of traction, even on slippery surfaces. These advantages
of crawler modules have been further supplemented by incorporating active
compliance in the module itself which helps to negotiate sharp bends in small
diameter pipes. The robot has a series of 3 such compliant foldable modules
interconnected by the links via passive joints. For the desirable pipe diameter
and curvature of the bends, the spring stiffness value for each passive joint
is determined by formulating a constrained optimization problem using the
quasi-static model of the robot. Moreover, a minimum friction coefficient value
between the module-pipe surface which can be vertically climbed by the robot
without slipping is estimated. The numerical simulation results have further
been validated by experiments on real robot prototype
