    Parameterized Algorithms for Modular-Width

    It is known that a number of natural graph problems which are FPT parameterized by treewidth become W-hard when parameterized by clique-width. It is therefore desirable to find a different structural graph parameter which is as general as possible, covers dense graphs but does not incur such a heavy algorithmic penalty. The main contribution of this paper is to consider a parameter called modular-width, defined using the well-known notion of modular decompositions. Using a combination of ILPs and dynamic programming we manage to design FPT algorithms for Coloring and Partitioning into paths (and hence Hamiltonian path and Hamiltonian cycle), which are W-hard for both clique-width and its recently introduced restriction, shrub-depth. We thus argue that modular-width occupies a sweet spot as a graph parameter, generalizing several simpler notions on dense graphs but still evading the "price of generality" paid by clique-width.Comment: to appear in IPEC 2013. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1304.5479 by other author

    Parameterized Algorithms for Load Coloring Problem

    One way to state the Load Coloring Problem (LCP) is as follows. Let G=(V,E)G=(V,E) be graph and let f:V{red,blue}f:V\rightarrow \{{\rm red}, {\rm blue}\} be a 2-coloring. An edge eEe\in E is called red (blue) if both end-vertices of ee are red (blue). For a 2-coloring ff, let rfr'_f and bfb'_f be the number of red and blue edges and let μf(G)=min{rf,bf}\mu_f(G)=\min\{r'_f,b'_f\}. Let μ(G)\mu(G) be the maximum of μf(G)\mu_f(G) over all 2-colorings. We introduce the parameterized problem kk-LCP of deciding whether μ(G)k\mu(G)\ge k, where kk is the parameter. We prove that this problem admits a kernel with at most 7k7k. Ahuja et al. (2007) proved that one can find an optimal 2-coloring on trees in polynomial time. We generalize this by showing that an optimal 2-coloring on graphs with tree decomposition of width tt can be found in time O(2t)O^*(2^t). We also show that either GG is a Yes-instance of kk-LCP or the treewidth of GG is at most 2k2k. Thus, kk-LCP can be solved in time $O^*(4^k).

    Improved Parameterized Algorithms for Constraint Satisfaction

    For many constraint satisfaction problems, the algorithm which chooses a random assignment achieves the best possible approximation ratio. For instance, a simple random assignment for {\sc Max-E3-Sat} allows 7/8-approximation and for every \eps >0 there is no polynomial-time (7/8+\eps)-approximation unless P=NP. Another example is the {\sc Permutation CSP} of bounded arity. Given the expected fraction ρ\rho of the constraints satisfied by a random assignment (i.e. permutation), there is no (\rho+\eps)-approximation algorithm for every \eps >0, assuming the Unique Games Conjecture (UGC). In this work, we consider the following parameterization of constraint satisfaction problems. Given a set of mm constraints of constant arity, can we satisfy at least ρm+k\rho m +k constraint, where ρ\rho is the expected fraction of constraints satisfied by a random assignment? {\sc Constraint Satisfaction Problems above Average} have been posed in different forms in the literature \cite{Niedermeier2006,MahajanRamanSikdar09}. We present a faster parameterized algorithm for deciding whether m/2+k/2m/2+k/2 equations can be simultaneously satisfied over F2{\mathbb F}_2. As a consequence, we obtain O(k)O(k)-variable bikernels for {\sc boolean CSPs} of arity cc for every fixed cc, and for {\sc permutation CSPs} of arity 3. This implies linear bikernels for many problems under the "above average" parameterization, such as {\sc Max-cc-Sat}, {\sc Set-Splitting}, {\sc Betweenness} and {\sc Max Acyclic Subgraph}. As a result, all the parameterized problems we consider in this paper admit 2O(k)2^{O(k)}-time algorithms. We also obtain non-trivial hybrid algorithms for every Max cc-CSP: for every instance II, we can either approximate II beyond the random assignment threshold in polynomial time, or we can find an optimal solution to II in subexponential time.Comment: A preliminary version of this paper has been accepted for IPEC 201

    Parameterized Algorithms for Graph Partitioning Problems

    We study a broad class of graph partitioning problems, where each problem is specified by a graph G=(V,E)G=(V,E), and parameters kk and pp. We seek a subset UVU\subseteq V of size kk, such that α1m1+α2m2\alpha_1m_1 + \alpha_2m_2 is at most (or at least) pp, where α1,α2R\alpha_1,\alpha_2\in\mathbb{R} are constants defining the problem, and m1,m2m_1, m_2 are the cardinalities of the edge sets having both endpoints, and exactly one endpoint, in UU, respectively. This class of fixed cardinality graph partitioning problems (FGPP) encompasses Max (k,nk)(k,n-k)-Cut, Min kk-Vertex Cover, kk-Densest Subgraph, and kk-Sparsest Subgraph. Our main result is an O(4k+o(k)Δk)O^*(4^{k+o(k)}\Delta^k) algorithm for any problem in this class, where Δ1\Delta \geq 1 is the maximum degree in the input graph. This resolves an open question posed by Bonnet et al. [IPEC 2013]. We obtain faster algorithms for certain subclasses of FGPPs, parameterized by pp, or by (k+p)(k+p). In particular, we give an O(4p+o(p))O^*(4^{p+o(p)}) time algorithm for Max (k,nk)(k,n-k)-Cut, thus improving significantly the best known O(pp)O^*(p^p) time algorithm

    Towards Work-Efficient Parallel Parameterized Algorithms

    Parallel parameterized complexity theory studies how fixed-parameter tractable (fpt) problems can be solved in parallel. Previous theoretical work focused on parallel algorithms that are very fast in principle, but did not take into account that when we only have a small number of processors (between 2 and, say, 1024), it is more important that the parallel algorithms are work-efficient. In the present paper we investigate how work-efficient fpt algorithms can be designed. We review standard methods from fpt theory, like kernelization, search trees, and interleaving, and prove trade-offs for them between work efficiency and runtime improvements.     Parameterized Algorithms for Directed Maximum Leaf Problems

    We prove that finding a rooted subtree with at least kk leaves in a digraph is a fixed parameter tractable problem. A similar result holds for finding rooted spanning trees with many leaves in digraphs from a wide family L\cal L that includes all strong and acyclic digraphs. This settles completely an open question of Fellows and solves another one for digraphs in L\cal L. Our algorithms are based on the following combinatorial result which can be viewed as a generalization of many results for a `spanning tree with many leaves' in the undirected case, and which is interesting on its own: If a digraph DLD\in \cal L of order nn with minimum in-degree at least 3 contains a rooted spanning tree, then DD contains one with at least (n/2)1/51(n/2)^{1/5}-1 leaves
