Stereo study as an aid to visual analysis of ERTS and Skylab images
The author has identified the following significant results. The parallax on ERTS and Skylab images is sufficiently large for exploitation by human photointerpreters. The ability to view the imagery stereoscopically reduces the signal-to-noise ratio. Stereoscopic examination of orbital data can contribute to studies of spatial, spectral, and temporal variations on the imagery. The combination of true stereo parallax, plus shadow parallax offer many possibilities to human interpreters for making meaningful analyses of orbital imagery
Real-time 3-D X-ray and gamma-ray viewer
A multi-pinhole aperture lead screen forms an equal plurality of invisible mini-images having dissimilar perspectives of an X-ray and gamma-ray emitting object (ABC) onto a near-earth phosphor layer. This layer provides visible light mini-images directly into a visible light image intensifier. A viewing screen having an equal number of dissimilar perspective apertures distributed across its face in a geometric pattern identical to the lead screen, provides a viewer with a real, pseudoscopic image (A'B'C') of the object with full horizontal and vertical parallax. Alternatively, a third screen identical to viewing screen and spaced apart from a second visible light image intensifier, may be positioned between the first image intensifier and the viewing screen, thereby providing the viewer with a virtual, orthoscopic image (A"B"C") of the object (ABC) with full horizontal and vertical parallax
Enhancement of Underwater Video Mosaics for Post-Processing
Mosaics of seafloor created from still images or video acquired underwater have proved to be useful for construction of maps of forensic and archeological sites, species\u27 abundance estimates, habitat characterization, etc. Images taken by a camera mounted on a stable platform are registered (at first pair-wise and then globally) and assembled in a high resolution visual map of the surveyed area. While this map is usually sufficient for a human orientation and even quantitative measurements, it often contains artifacts that complicate an automatic post-processing (for example, extraction of shapes for organism counting, or segmentation for habitat characterization). The most prominent artifacts are inter-frame seams caused by inhomogeneous artificial illumination, and local feature misalignments due to parallax effects - result of an attempt to represent a 3D world on a 2D map. In this paper we propose two image processing techniques for mosaic quality enhancement - median mosaic-based illumination correction suppressing appearance of inter-frame seams, and micro warping decreasing influence of parallax effects
Trigonometric Parallaxes of Massive Star Forming Regions: IV. G35.20-0.74 and G35.20-1.74
We report trigonometric parallaxes for the high-mass star forming regions
G35.20-0.74 and G35.20-1.74, corresponding to distances of 2.19 (+0.24 -0.20)
kpc and 3.27 (+0.56 -0.42) kpc, respectively. The distances to both sources are
close to their near kinematic distances and place them in the
Carina-Sagittarius spiral arm. Combining the distances and proper motions with
observed radial velocities gives the locations and full space motions of the
star forming regions. Assuming a standard model of the Galaxy, G35.20-0.74 and
G35.20-1.74 have peculiar motions of ~13 km/s and ~16 km/s counter to Galactic
rotation and ~9 km/s toward the North Galactic Pole.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure
Development of a video-rate range finder using dynamic threshold method for characteristic point detection
This study develops a video-rate stereo range finding circuit to obtain the depth of objects in a scene by processing video signals (R, G, B, and brightness signals) from binocular CCD cameras. The electronic circuit implements a dynamic threshold method to decrease the affect of signal noise in characteristic point detection, where a video signal from each CCD camera is compared with multiple thresholds, shifting dynamically by feeding back the previous comparison result. Several object depth measurement experiments for simple indoor scenes show that the dynamic threshold method gives high acquisition and correct rates of depth data compared with those by a fixed threshold method for the video signals and a relative method for R, G, and B signals utilized in the authors' previous range finders
Trigonometric Parallaxes for 1,507 Nearby Mid-to-Late M-dwarfs
The MEarth survey is a search for small rocky planets around the smallest,
nearest stars to the Sun as identified by high proper motion with red colors.
We augmented our planetary search time series with lower cadence astrometric
imaging and obtained two million images of approximately 1800 stars suspected
to be mid-to-late M dwarfs. We fit an astrometric model to MEarth's images for
1507 stars and obtained trigonometric distance measurements to each star with
an average precision of 5 milliarcseconds. Our measurements, combined with the
2MASS photometry, allowed us to obtain an absolute K_s magnitude for each star.
In turn, this allows us to better estimate the stellar parameters than those
obtained with photometric estimates alone and to better prioritize the targets
chosen to monitor at high cadence for planetary transits. The MEarth sample is
mostly complete out to a distance of 25 parsecs for stars of type M5.5V and
earlier, and mostly complete for later type stars out to 20 parsecs. We find
eight stars that are within ten parsecs of the Sun for which there did not
exist a published trigonometric parallax distance estimate. We release with
this work a catalog of the trigonometric parallax measurements for 1,507
mid-to-late M-dwarfs, as well as new estimates of their masses and radii.Comment: ApJ, accepted. 36 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. Please find our data

Objective Evaluation Criteria for Shooting Quality of Stereo Cameras over Short Distance
Stereo cameras are the basic tools used to obtain stereoscopic image pairs, which can lead to truly great image quality. However, some inappropriate shooting conditions may cause discomfort while viewing stereo images. It is therefore considerably necessary to establish the perceptual criteria that can be used to evaluate the shooting quality of stereo cameras. This article proposes objective quality evaluation criteria based on the characteristics of parallel and toed-in camera configurations. Considering the different internal structures and basic shooting principles, this paper focuses on short-distance shooting conditions and establishes assessment criteria for both parallel and toed-in camera configurations. Experimental results show that the proposed evaluation criteria can predict the visual perception of stereoscopic images and effectively evaluate stereoscopic image quality
Astrometric Discovery of GJ 164B
We discovered a low-mass companion to the M-dwarf GJ 164 with the CCD-based
imaging system of the Stellar Planet Survey (STEPS) astrometric program. The
existence of GJ 164B was confirmed with Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS imaging
observations. A high-dispersion spectral observation in V sets a lower limit of
delta m> 2.2 mag between the two components of the system. Based upon our
parallax value of 0.082 +/- 0.008, we derive the following orbital parameters:
P = 2.04 +/- 0.03 y, a = 1.03 +/- 0.03 AU, and Mtotal = 0.265 +/- 0.020 MSun.
The component masses are MA = 0.170 +/- 0.015 MSun and MB = 0.095 +/- 0.015
MSun. Based on its mass, colors, and spectral properties, GJ 164B has spectral
