Net solar generation potential from urban rooftops in Los Angeles
Rooftops provide accessible locations for solar energy installations. While rooftop solar arrays can offset in-building electricity needs, they may also stress electric grid operations. Here we present an analysis of net electricity generation potential from distributed rooftop solar in Los Angeles. We integrate spatial and temporal data for property-level electricity demands, rooftop solar generation potential, and grid capacity constraints to estimate the potential for solar to meet on-site demands and supply net exports to the electric grid. In the study area with 1.2 million parcels, rooftop solar could meet 7200 Gigawatt Hours (GWh) of on-site building demands (~29% of demand). Overall potential net generation is negative, meaning buildings use more electricity than they can produce. Yet, cumulative net export potential from solar to grid circuits is 16,400 GWh. Current policies that regulate solar array interconnection to the grid result in unutilized solar power output of 1700 MW. Lower-income and at-risk communities in LA have greater potential for exporting net solar generation to the grid. This potential should be recognized through investments and policy innovations. The method demonstrates the need for considering time-dependent calculations of net solar potential and offers a template for distributed renewable energy planning in cities

The Net Generation enters university: What are the implications for Technology Enhanced Learning?
The term Net generation suggests that the generation of young people born after 1983 are different from any preceding generation because they have been exposed to digital technology in their day-to-day existence, and that this is has a profound impact on their attitudes and approach to learning. Examining the use of the terms Net generation and Digital Natives this paper reports a survey of first year undergraduate students in the UK. This paper, based on research conducted in the spring of 2008 examines whether there is a distinct Net generation amongst first year UK university students and if there are significant differences attributable to age, gender or disciplinary differences. It concludes that whilst there are significant changes taking place amongst first year undergraduate students in the UK they are far more complex than the idea of a single new generation would suggest
Serine biosynthesis with one carbon catabolism represents a novel pathway for ATP generation in cells using alternative glycolysis with zero net ATP production
Recent experimental evidence indicates that some cancer cells have an alternative glycolysis pathway with net zero ATP production, implying that upregulation of glycolysis in these cells may not be related to the generation of ATP. Here we use a genome-scale model of human cell metabolism to investigate the potential metabolic alterations in cells using net zero ATP glycolysis. We uncover a novel pathway for ATP generation that involves reactions from the serine biosynthesis and one-carbon metabolism pathways. This pathway has a predicted two-fold higher flux rate in cells using net zero ATP glycolysis than those using standard glycolysis and generates twice as much ATP with significantly lower rate of lactate- but higher rate of alanine secretion. Thus, in cells using the standard- or the net zero ATP glycolysis pathways a significant portion of the glycolysis flux is always associated with ATP generation, and the ratio between the flux rates of the two pathways determines the rate of ATP generation and lactate and alanine secretion during glycolysis
Generative Cooperative Net for Image Generation and Data Augmentation
How to build a good model for image generation given an abstract concept is a
fundamental problem in computer vision. In this paper, we explore a generative
model for the task of generating unseen images with desired features. We
propose the Generative Cooperative Net (GCN) for image generation. The idea is
similar to generative adversarial networks except that the generators and
discriminators are trained to work accordingly. Our experiments on hand-written
digit generation and facial expression generation show that GCN's two
cooperative counterparts (the generator and the classifier) can work together
nicely and achieve promising results. We also discovered a usage of such
generative model as an data-augmentation tool. Our experiment of applying this
method on a recognition task shows that it is very effective comparing to other
existing methods. It is easy to set up and could help generate a very large

Collaboration and the Net generation: The changing characteristics of first year university students
This paper reports on the first phase of research that investigates the Net generation entering university. The paper focuses on claims about the Net generation’s relationship to collaboration and cooperation and the ways that this relationship is associated with technological rather than social processes. Based on a survey of first year students in five universities across a range of subjects and disciplinary areas, the paper concludes that we should be cautious about the claims that have been made about Net generation learners. It suggests that broad brush approaches to generational changes obscure the subtle but important differences between students. It also suggests that claims that there has been a step change in attitudes takes attention away from the kinds of choices that might be necessary in relation to variations that are indeed taking place amongst new cohorts of students
Long Text Generation via Adversarial Training with Leaked Information
Automatically generating coherent and semantically meaningful text has many
applications in machine translation, dialogue systems, image captioning, etc.
Recently, by combining with policy gradient, Generative Adversarial Nets (GAN)
that use a discriminative model to guide the training of the generative model
as a reinforcement learning policy has shown promising results in text
generation. However, the scalar guiding signal is only available after the
entire text has been generated and lacks intermediate information about text
structure during the generative process. As such, it limits its success when
the length of the generated text samples is long (more than 20 words). In this
paper, we propose a new framework, called LeakGAN, to address the problem for
long text generation. We allow the discriminative net to leak its own
high-level extracted features to the generative net to further help the
guidance. The generator incorporates such informative signals into all
generation steps through an additional Manager module, which takes the
extracted features of current generated words and outputs a latent vector to
guide the Worker module for next-word generation. Our extensive experiments on
synthetic data and various real-world tasks with Turing test demonstrate that
LeakGAN is highly effective in long text generation and also improves the
performance in short text generation scenarios. More importantly, without any
supervision, LeakGAN would be able to implicitly learn sentence structures only

Students, the Net Generation and Digital Natives:Accounting for Educational Change
This chapter examines a number of different terms and popularized accounts of young people who are now at the stage in their lives of engaging in university education across the world. Three of the more common terms that have been used to describe this cohort of young people are the Net generation (Tapscott 1998, 2009), Digital Natives (Prensky 2001; 2001a: 2009) and Millennials (Howe and Strauss 2000; Oblinger & Oblinger 2005).
This chapter critically examines the argument, common to writers using both terms: that the existence of an environment infused with digital and networked technologies, combined with an active engagement in these new technologies, leads directly to a sharp generational break. The chapter goes on to examine the determinist nature of the argument and the way this has been related to one particular pedagogical approach; collaborative learning. It examines the wider social and technological context and in particular the ideas of networked individualism and networked sociality. Finally the chapter concludes by examining which aspects of the Digital Native and Net Generation arguments are worth taking forward and by identifying those aspects of the arguments that need to be abandoned
