Bidirectional link mock-up for avionics applications

    Get PDF
Copper-based networks have been extensively employed on aircraft to ensure the avionics data-communications. Since the Airbus A380 development, Avionic Data Communication Network (ADCN) has been implemented to ensure transmissions between avionic equipment. This system is based on the Avionic Full Duplex Ethernet (AFDX), and transfers data at rates up to 100 Mb/s. The need of faster communications systems, up to 1Gb/s, has led to great interest in fiber optic based networks. Beyond higher data rates capabilities, the fiber optics have additional benefits, compared to electrical cables, in terms of weight saving and electromagnetic interference immunity which is strongly needed at gigahertz bandwidths. Multimode fibers (MMF) are becoming increasingly attractive for short-haul (<300m) high-speed interconnections. Besides, Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) present interesting performances in comparison to edge-emitting lasers, cost effective and are widely chosen in this type of applications. We aim at achieving an entirely optical fiber Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) link based on 850nm VCSELs to interconnect avionic equipments. To meet IEEE 802.3 standards [1] and ADCN requirements [2], the fiber optic link must be full-duplex, bi-directional, on a single wavelength, and on the same fiber on up to 100m-distance. We have used, at each side of the link, a transceiver module developed for harsh environment applications. Also, there are multiple connections due to production breaks. These connections give birth to return loss (RL) and consequently crosstalk. One might pay attention to the impact of the RL on the link. We present the characterization of a mock-up and the comparison of experimental results with the GbE requirements

Laboratory studies of spacecraft response to transient discharge pulses

    Get PDF
The in-orbit measurement of spacecraft discharge properties was investigated. The experiments include design and fabrication of appropriate sensors and effects of spacecraft electromagnetic responses on the interpretation of the discharge data. Electric field sensors especially designed to response to high-speed transient signals were installed on a mock-up of a satellite. The simple mock-up was basically a sheet of aluminum rolled to form a cylinder. A movable spark-discharge noise source designed to be electromagnetically isolated from its power supply system was used to induce transient signals at various locations on the spacecraft's outer surface. The measurements and their implications are described. It is concluded that practical orbital measurements to define discharge noise source properties should be possible, and that simple mock-ups of the type described below are useful in sensor system design and data interpretation

Design guidelines for robotically serviceable hardware

    Get PDF
Research being conducted at the Goddard Space Flight Center into the development of guidelines for the design of robotically serviceable spaceflight hardware is described. A mock-up was built based on an existing spaceflight system demonstrating how these guidelines can be applied to actual hardware. The report examines the basic servicing philosophy being studied and how this philosophy is reflected in the formulation of design guidelines for robotic servicing. A description of the mock-up is presented with emphasis on the design features that make it robot friendly. Three robotic servicing schemes fulfilling the design guidelines were developed for the mock-up. These servicing schemes are examined as to how their implementation was affected by the constraints of the spacecraft system on which the mock-up is based

Human factors consideration in the interaction process with virtual environment

Newrequirements are needed by industry for computer aided design (CAD) data. Some techniques of CAD data management and the computer power unit capabilities enable an extraction of a virtual mock-up for an interactive use. CAD data may also be distributed and shared by different designers in various parts of the world (in the same company and with subcontractors). The use of digital mock-up is not limited to the mechanical design of the product but is dedicated to a maximum number of trades in industry. One of the main issues is to enable the evaluation of the product without any physical representation of the product but based on its virtual representation. In that objective, most of main actors in industry domain use virtual reality technologies. These technologies consist basically in enabling the designer to perceive the product in design process. This perception has to be rendered to guarantee that the evaluation process is done as in a real condition. The perception is the fruit of alchemy between the user and the VR technologies. Thus, in the experiment design, the whole system human-VR technology has to be considered

Identifying and remeshing contact interfaces in a polyhedral assembly for digital mock-up applications

Polyhedral models are widely used for applications such as manufacturing, digital simulation or visualization. They are discrete models; easy to store, to manipulate, allowing levels of resolution for visualization. They can be easily exchanged between CAD systems without loss of data. Previous works (Comput Aided Des 29(4):287–298, 1997, Comput Graphics 22(5):565–585, 1998) have focused on simplification process applied to polyhedral part models. The goal of the proposed approach is to extend these processes to polyhedral assembly models, describing the digital mock-up of a future manufacturing product. To apply simplification techniques or other processes on polyhedral assemblies, contact surfaces between interacting objects have to be identified and specific constraints must be applied for processing. The approach proposed allows checking and maintaining a global consistency of the assembly model to ensure the reliability of the future processes. Thus, contacts between objects are detected using an approach that works for a static configuration of the assembly. Finally, a precise detection of the faces involved in each contact area is made and the resulting input domains identified are processed using a local Frontal Delaunay re-meshing technique to produce an identical tessellation on both objects involved in the processed contact. The quality of the triangulation produced is also checked

International audienceIn Museum, many testimonies of our cultural heritage can be found. But because of their high fragility, the public can not get too close to them. In this communication we will explain a project that deals with a physical mock-up of Nantes harbor; the mock-up has been built in 1899 and shown in 1900 for the World's Fair that took place in Paris, France. This heritage object is nowadays at the "Château des Ducs" museum in Nantes, France, but shown behind panes. The object has been digitized and a 3D model has been reconstructed. Thanks to a virtual system coupled to a touchscreen with semantic research modules and to a light pointer, it will allow the visitor to better understand the mock-up and the associated history. Moreover, the system will be user-centered: the visitor will interact directly with the digital mock-up and obviously with all the knowledge that allows the contextualization

Many of the games with the Indonesian culture adaptations has been developed nowadays. Some of them are made for commercial markets and the other still developed as portfolio and also academic purposes. Some games, already had great gameplay and also had some beautifully digitalized artwork. However, in academic level games projects such as communications designs student’s final projects games prototyping, they often show many errors in the process, especially at gameplay and asset’s development. This circumstances happened because they (the students) lack of the knowledge about how to make a good gameplay based on narrations and always concern about how to designing the visual contents than make it have a great game. With the qualitative research methods by analyzing a games’ project called Taman Putroe Phang, a game project which adapting the Aceh’s Kingdom Romance History. Using game development theory and game design theories, this research wants to explain about how the game developed using board game/ tabletop prototyping before go to the digitalized final game design. The research purpose is to give a perspective and helps the beginner game designer to make a success game prototype using the table top mock up at the process, that shown in game’s prototype.
