Organic residues - a resource for arable soils
An increased recirculation of urban organic residues to arable soils has several environmental benefits, but there is a need for reliable test systems to ensure that soil quality is maintained. In this thesis, soil microbial, chemical and physical properties were included in an integrated evaluation to reflect the positive and negative effects of amending arable soils with organic residues. Efficient statistical tools and methods to describe intrinsic spatial variation are important when evaluating soil data. A new method was developed, combining near infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy with principal component analysis (PCA). The first principal component (PC1) of NIR data described spatial soil variation better than the conventional soil variables total carbon, clay content and pH. A long-term field trial was established in which the soil was amended annually with organic residues (compost, biogas residues, sewage sludge) and fertilizers (pig manure, cow manure and mineral fertilizer, NPS). Annual measurements of soil and crop quality as well as yield revealed that biogas residues performed best among the organic residues. It improved several important microbiological properties, such as substrate-induced respiration (SIR) and potential ammonium oxidation (PAO), and it compared well with mineral fertilizer in terms of grain quality and harvest yield. Altogether, the results from the field trial showed no negative effects from any of the organic residues. Short- and moderately long-term effects of wood ash and compost on potential denitrification activity (PDA) and PAO were evaluated in a laboratory incubation experiment. Wood ash application had a profound toxic effect on PDA both in the short- and long-term. This toxic effect was mitigated when compost was added to the soil
Soil biological quality of grassland fertilized with adjusted cattle manure slurries in comparison with organic and inorganic fertilizers
We studied the effect of five fertilizers (including two adjusted manure slurries) and an untreated control on soil biota and explored the effect on the ecosystem services they provided. Our results suggest that the available N (NO3- and NH4+) in the soil plays a central role in the effect of fertilizers on nematodes and microorganisms. Microorganisms are affected directly through nutrient availability and indirectly through grass root mass. Nematodes are affected indirectly through microbial biomass and grass root mass. A lower amount of available N in the treatment with inorganic fertilizer was linked to a higher root mass and a higher abundance and proportion of herbivorous nematodes. A higher amount of available N in the organic fertilizer treatments resulted in a twofold higher bacterial activity (measured as bacterial growth rate, viz. thymidine incorporation), a higher proportion of bacterivorous nematodes, a 30% higher potential N mineralization (aerobic incubation), and 25–50% more potentially mineralizable N (anaerobic incubation). Compared to inorganic fertilizer, organic fertilization increased the C total, the N total, the activity of decomposers, and the supply of nutrients via the soil food web. Within the group of organic fertilizers, there was no significant difference in C total, abundances of soil biota, and the potential N mineralization rate. There were no indications that farmyard manure or the adjusted manure slurries provided the ecosystem service “supply of nutrients” better than normal manure slurry. Normal manure slurry provided the highest bacterial activity and the highest amount of mineralizable N and it was the only fertilizer resulting in a positive trend in grass yield over the years 2000–2005. The number of earthworm burrows was higher in the treatments with organic fertilizers compared to the one with the inorganic fertilizer, which suggests that organic fertilizers stimulate the ecosystem service of water regulation more than inorganic fertilizer. The trend towards higher epigeic earthworm numbers with application of farmyard manure and one of the adjusted manure slurries, combined with the negative relation between epigeic earthworms and bulk density and a significantly lower penetration resistance in the same fertilizer types, is preliminary evidence that these two organic fertilizer types contribute more to the service of soil structure maintenance than inorganic fertilize

Modelling of water balance and nitrogen cycle in vegetative filter strips
The retention of nutrients by 10-m-wide grass buffers and buffers under natural vegetation has been studied over 10 years in Jokioinen in southwestern Finland. The results have been compared with those from 70-m-long plots without buffers. Grass was sown on the adjacent field and plots without buffers in 2002, and the field plots and these were grazed for 12 and 24 days in summer 2003 and 2004, respectively

This guide is an overview of the latest scientific information concerning potential food safety risks related to the application of manure in vegetable production, and gives recommendations for minimizing these risks. Bio-Fertilizers via Co-Digestion: a Review
In diversifying the economies of most oil producing countries especially in regions with arable lands, Agriculture becomes the next choice aside mineral deposits. This has led to a search for an alternative to inorganic fertilizers, the alternatives are the biofertilizers. The paper discussed the classification of the anaerobic co-digestion process based on the application of inoculants to the biodigester feedstock to speed up the digestion process and the absence of inoculants. Biodigester feedstock also looked at the various mechanisms in the digestion process which includes hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis, the pathways were illustrated with chemical equations and various microorganisms that take part in the anaerobic process were mentioned and tabulated. The types of biofertilizers, merits, and demerits, the difference between biofertilizers and organic fertilizers were comprehensively discussed. Current trends on the application of the co-digestion technique to improve the yield, nutrient, and safety of biofertilizers and also the recent progression on the technique were mentioned
Effects of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) on yield, growth and nutrient contents of organically grown strawberry
The effects of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) on the fruit yield, growth and nutrient element
content of strawberry cv. Fern were investigated under organic growing conditions between 2006 and
2008. The experimental plot was a completely randomized design with 3 replicates. Three PGPB strains
(Pseudomonas BA-8, Bacillus OSU-142 and Bacillus M-3) were used alone or in combination as biofertilizer
agent in the experiment. Data through 3 years showed that the use of PGPB significantly
increased fruit yield, plant growth and leaf P and Zn contents. Root inoculation of M3 and floral and foliar
spraying of OSU-142 and BA-8 bacteria stimulated plant growth resulting in significant yield increases.
M3 + BA-8, BA-8 + OSU-142, M3, M3 + OSU-142 and BA-8 applications increased cumulative yield by
33.2%, 18.4%, 18.2%, 15.3% and 10.5%, respectively. Number of fruits per plant significantly increased by
the applications of M3 + BA-8 (91.73) and M3 (81.58) compared with the control (68.66). In addition, P
and Zn contents of strawberry leaves with bacterial inoculation significantly increased under organic
growing conditions. Available P contents in soil were increased from 0.35 kg P2O5/da at the beginning of
the study to 2.00, 1.97 and 1.82 kg P2O5/da by M3 + OSU-142, M3 + BA-8 and M3 + BA-8 + OSU-142
applications, respectively. Overall, the results of this study suggest that root inoculation of Bacillus M3
alone or in combination with spraying Bacillus OSU-142 or Pseudomonas BA-8 have the potential to
increase the yield, growth and nutrition content of strawberry plant under organic growing conditions

Based on the fact that organic fertilization can improve soil quality, we compared the effects of conventional and organic soil management on microbial activity and mycorrhization of seedless grape crops. We measured glomerospores number, most probable number (MPN) of propagules, richness of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) species, AMF root colonization, EE-BRSP production, carbon microbial biomass (C-MB), microbial respiration, fluorescein diacetate hydrolytic activity (FDA) and metabolic coefficient (qCO2). The organic management led to an increase in all variables with the exception of EE-BRSP and qCO2. Mycorrhizal colonization increased from 4.7% in conventional crops to 15.9% in organic crops. Spore number ranged from 4.1 to 12.4 per 50 g-1 soil in both management systems. The most probable number of AMF propagules increased from 79 cm-3 soil in the conventional system to 110 cm-3 soil in the organic system. Microbial carbon, CO2 emission, and FDA activity were increased by 100 to 200% in the organic crop. Thirteen species of AMF were identified, the majority in the organic cultivation system. Acaulospora excavata, Entrophospora infrequens, Glomus sp.3 and Scutellospora sp. were found only in the organically managed crop. S. gregaria was found only in the conventional crop. Research Program for Organic Food and Farming in Finland
The Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry started a three-year Research Programme on Organic Food and Farming in 2003. The programme consists of 15 projects on different themes covering the whole food chain and has an annual budget of about 2.2 MEUR. Risk factors for Salmonella, Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli and Campylobacter occurrence in primary production of leafy greens and strawberries
The microbiological sanitary quality and safety of leafy greens and strawberries were assessed in the primary production in Belgium, Brazil, Egypt, Norway and Spain by enumeration of Escherichia coli and detection of Salmonella, Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) and Campylobacter. Water samples were more prone to containing pathogens (54 positives out of 950 analyses) than soil (16/1186) and produce on the field (18/977 for leafy greens and 5/402 for strawberries). The prevalence of pathogens also varied markedly according to the sampling region. Flooding of fields increased the risk considerably, with odds ratio (OR) 10.9 for Salmonella and 7.0 for STEC. A significant association between elevated numbers of generic E. coli and detection of pathogens (OR of 2.3 for STEC and 2.7 for Salmonella) was established. Generic E. coli was found to be a suitable index organism for Salmonella and STEC, but to a lesser extent for Campylobacter.
