Logistic Map Potentials
We develop and illustrate methods to compute all single particle potentials
that underlie the logistic map, x --> sx(1-x) for 0<s<=4. We show that the
switchback potentials can be obtained from the primary potential through
functional transformations. We are thereby able to produce the various branches
of the corresponding analytic potential functions, which have an infinite
number of branch points for generic s>2. We illustrate the methods numerically
for the cases s=5/2 and s=10/3
Optimal Planar Electric Dipole Antenna
Considerable time is often spent optimizing antennas to meet specific design
metrics. Rarely, however, are the resulting antenna designs compared to
rigorous physical bounds on those metrics. Here we study the performance of
optimized planar meander line antennas with respect to such bounds. Results
show that these simple structures meet the lower bound on radiation Q-factor
(maximizing single resonance fractional bandwidth), but are far from reaching
the associated physical bounds on efficiency. The relative performance of other
canonical antenna designs is compared in similar ways, and the quantitative
results are connected to intuitions from small antenna design, physical bounds,

The map equation
Many real-world networks are so large that we must simplify their structure
before we can extract useful information about the systems they represent. As
the tools for doing these simplifications proliferate within the network
literature, researchers would benefit from some guidelines about which of the
so-called community detection algorithms are most appropriate for the
structures they are studying and the questions they are asking. Here we show
that different methods highlight different aspects of a network's structure and
that the the sort of information that we seek to extract about the system must
guide us in our decision. For example, many community detection algorithms,
including the popular modularity maximization approach, infer module
assignments from an underlying model of the network formation process. However,
we are not always as interested in how a system's network structure was formed,
as we are in how a network's extant structure influences the system's behavior.
To see how structure influences current behavior, we will recognize that links
in a network induce movement across the network and result in system-wide
interdependence. In doing so, we explicitly acknowledge that most networks
carry flow. To highlight and simplify the network structure with respect to
this flow, we use the map equation. We present an intuitive derivation of this
flow-based and information-theoretic method and provide an interactive on-line
application that anyone can use to explore the mechanics of the map equation.
We also describe an algorithm and provide source code to efficiently decompose

Learning through play: an educational computer game to introduce radar fundamentals
The information exchange has evolved from traditional books to computers and Internet in a few years' time. Our current university students were born in this age: they learn and have fun with different methods as previous generations did. These digital natives enjoy computer games. Thus, designing games for learning some selected topics could be a good teaching strategy for such collective and also for undergraduate university students. This paper describes the development and test of an educational computer game revolving around radar. The objective of the game RADAR Technology is to teach students about the fundamentals of radar, while having fun during the learning experience. Based on the principle that you learn better what you practice, the authors want to induce students to discover a difficult to understand topic by proposing them a different experience, in a format better adapted to their generation skills. The computer game has been tested with actual students and the obtained results seem to be very promising
