To the center of cold spot with Planck

The structure of the cold spot, of a non-Gaussian anomaly in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) sky first detected by Vielva et al. is studied using the data by Planck satellite. The obtained map of the degree of stochasticity (K-map) of CMB for the cold spot, reveals, most clearly in 100 GHz band, a shell-type structure with a center coinciding with the minima of the temperature distribution. The shell structure is non-Gaussian at a 4\sigma confidence level. Such behavior of the K-map supports the void nature of the cold spot. The applied method can be used for tracing voids that have no signatures in redshift surveys.Comment: A & A (in press), 4 pages, 5 figures; to match the published versio

Work in progress: introduction of K-map based nano-logic synthesis as knowledge module in logic design course

    Get PDF
This work in progress reports an effort of introducing knowledge module regarding novel nano-devices and novel logic primitives in undergraduate logic design class. Our motivation is to make our students aware of fundamental abstracted logical behaviors of future nano-devices, their functionality. This effort would also help the students use their existing knowledge of K-map based logical synthesis into constructing logic blocks for novel devices that uses majority logic as basic construct. Moreover, additional to stimulating our students' interests, we are also augmenting their learning by challenging them to use their existing knowledge to analyze, synthesize and comprehend novel nano-logic issues through the worksheets and lecture modules. Whereas many efforts are focusing on developing new courses on nanofabrication and even nano-computing, we intend to augment the existing standard EE and CS courses by inserting knowledge modules on nano-logic structure for stimulating their interest without significant diversion from the course framework

On the detection of point sources in Planck LFI 70 GHz CMB maps based on cleaned K-map

We use the Planck LFI 70GHz data to further probe point source detection technique in the sky maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. The method developed by Tegmark et al. for foreground reduced maps and the Kolmogorov parameter as the descriptor are adopted for the analysis of Planck satellite CMB temperature data. Most of the detected points coincide with point sources already revealed by other methods. However, we have also found 9 source candidates for which still no counterparts are known.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in Modern Physics Letters A. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1206.712

Digi Island: A Serious Game for Teaching and Learning Digital Circuit Optimization

    Get PDF
Karnaugh maps, also known as K-maps, are a tool used to optimize or simplify digital logic circuits. A K-map is a graphical display of a logic circuit. K-map optimization is essentially the process of finding a minimum number of maximal aggregations of K-map cells. with values of 1 according to a set of rules. The Digi Island is a serious game designed for aiding students to learn K-map optimization. The game takes place on an exotic island (called Digi Island) in the Pacific Ocean . The player is an adventurer to the Digi Island and will transform it into a tourist attraction by developing real estates, such as amusement parks.and hotels. The Digi Island game elegantly converts boring 1s and Os in digital circuits into usable and unusable spaces on a beautiful island and transforms K-map optimization into real estate development, an activity with which many students are familiar and also interested in. This paper discusses the design, development, and some preliminary results of the Digi Island game

Rational points on varieties and Morita equivalences of CC^*-algebras

Let V(k)V(k) be a projective variety over a number field kCk\subset\mathbf{C} and let AV\mathscr{A}_V be the Serre CC^*-algebra of V(k)V(k). We construct a functor F:V(k)AVF: V(k)\mapsto \mathscr{A}_V, such that the C\mathbf{C}-isomorphic (kk-isomorphic, resp.) varieties V(k)V(k) map to the Morita equivalent (isomorphic, resp.) CC^*-algebras AV\mathscr{A}_V. In other words, the isomorphisms of the algebra AV=F(V(k))\mathscr{A}_V=F(V(k)) preserve the kk-rational points of V(k)V(k), while the Morita equivalences of AV\mathscr{A}_V correspond to the twists of the variety V(k)V(k). We apply the result to the arithmetic geometry of the rational elliptic curves.Comment: 7 pages; an updat

Karnaugh Map (K-map), a method to simplify the logic equations in a logic circuit, was a compulsory topic on Digital Electronics\u27 subject, yet the learning process in TE-PNJ was still done manually. Therefore, the result of this research was a web-based software which was used as an interactive tool for teaching K-map. Furthermore, the main purpose of that tool was so that the learning process becomes more attractive, easily understood, and interactive for the students. Besides that, a web-based programming was applied to build that so it was considered as an open source application. More over, It could simplify logic circuits with 2 to 4 input variables and DON\u27T CARE conditions. In addition, it could display both input and output logic equations and also number of logic gates (AND, OR and NOT) contained in each of those logic equations. Keywords: K-map, variable input , DON\u27T CARE conditions, logic gate

    Non-zero degree maps between 2n2n-manifolds

Thom-Pontrjagin constructions are used to give a computable necessary and sufficient condition when a homomorphism ϕ:Hn(L;Z)Hn(M;Z)\phi : H^n(L;Z)\to H^n(M;Z) can be realized by a map f:MLf:M\to L of degree kk for closed (n1)(n-1)-connected 2n2n-manifolds MM and LL, n>1n>1. A corollary is that each (n1)(n-1)-connected 2n2n-manifold admits selfmaps of degree larger than 1, n>1n>1. In the most interesting case of dimension 4, with the additional surgery arguments we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a degree kk map from a closed orientable 4-manifold MM to a closed simply connected 4-manifold LL in terms of their intersection forms, in particular there is a map f:MLf:M\to L of degree 1 if and only if the intersection form of LL is isomorphic to a direct summand of that of MM.Comment: 18 page
