Vertical Integration and Investor Protection in Developing Countries
The industrial organization of developing countries is characterized by the pervasive use of subcontracting arrangements among small, financially constrained firms. This paper asks whether vertical integration relaxes those financial constraints. It shows that vertical integration trades off the benefits of joint liability against the costs of rendering the supply chain more opaque to external investors. In contrast to the commonly held view that pervasive input and capital market imperfections are conducive to vertical integration, the model predicts that the motives for vertical integration are not necessarily higher in developing countries. In particular, vertical integration is more likely to arise at intermediate levels of investor protection and better contract enforcement with suppliers reduces vertical integration only if financial markets are sufficiently developed. Evidence supporting both predictions is discussed.Vertical Integration, Industrial Development, Financial Constraints, Joint Liability, Trade Credit, Community-based Industries

Optimal Degree of Foreign Ownership under Uncertainty
This paper studies the integration strategies of multinational firms in a multiperiod
model under incomplete contracts and uncertainty. I incorporate continuous
levels of integration to the study of organizational choice in an existing
model of foreign direct investment (Antras and Helpman, 2004) and extend the
model to a multi-period framework of learning. The joint productivity of the two
partners in an integrated firm is unknown initially to both sides and is revealed
only after continued joint production. The model gives rise to a nondegenerate
distribution of foreign ownership at the firm level and shows that the optimal
level of integration rises with the age of the firm. These patterns are supported
by detailed plant-level data on share of foreign ownership. The model predicts
that the degree of foreign ownership is an increasing function of joint productivity
and intra-firm trade should rise over time as a result of increased control by
multinationals. I test the implications of my theory with plant-level data from
Turkey and find support for the predictions of the model.partial ownership, vertical integration, multinationals, uncertainty

Evaluation of Pediatric Manual Wheelchair Mobility Using Advanced Biomechanical Methods
There is minimal research of upper extremity joint dynamics during pediatric wheelchair mobility despite the large number of children using manual wheelchairs. Special concern arises with the pediatric population, particularly in regard to the longer duration of wheelchair use, joint integrity, participation and community integration, and transitional care into adulthood. This study seeks to provide evaluation methods for characterizing the biomechanics of wheelchair use by children with spinal cord injury (SCI). Twelve subjects with SCI underwent motion analysis while they propelled their wheelchair at a self-selected speed and propulsion pattern. Upper extremity joint kinematics, forces, and moments were computed using inverse dynamics methods with our custom model. The glenohumeral joint displayed the largest average range of motion (ROM) at 47.1° in the sagittal plane and the largest average superiorly and anteriorly directed joint forces of 6.1% BW and 6.5% BW, respectively. The largest joint moments were 1.4% body weight times height (BW × H) of elbow flexion and 1.2% BW × H of glenohumeral joint extension. Pediatric manual wheelchair users demonstrating these high joint demands may be at risk for pain and upper limb injuries. These evaluation methods may be a useful tool for clinicians and therapists for pediatric wheelchair prescription and training
