Numerical integration of the contravariant integral form of the Navier–Stokes equations in time-dependent curvilinear coordinate systems for three-dimensional free surface flows
We propose a three-dimensional non-hydrostatic shock-capturing numerical model for the simulation of wave propagation, transformation and breaking, which is based on an original integral formulation of the contravariant Navier–Stokes equations, devoid of Christoffel symbols, in general time-dependent curvilinear coordinates. A coordinate transformation maps the time-varying irregular physical domain that reproduces the complex geometries of coastal regions to a fixed uniform computational one. The advancing of the solution is performed by a second-order accurate strong stability preserving Runge–Kutta fractional-step method in which, at every stage of the method, a predictor velocity field is obtained by the shock-capturing scheme and a corrector velocity field is added to the previous one, to produce a non-hydrostatic divergence-free velocity field and update the water depth. The corrector velocity field is obtained by numerically solving a Poisson equation, expressed in integral contravariant form, by a multigrid technique which uses a four-colour Zebra Gauss–Seidel line-by-line method as smoother. Several test cases are used to verify the dispersion and shock-capturing properties of the proposed model in time-dependent curvilinear grids
IT integration, operations flexibility and performance: an empirical study
Purpose: This study examines the relationship between IT implementation and performance
with manufacturing flexibility based on a sample drawn from a set of manufacturing firms.
Design/methodology/approach: The relationships were analyzed using structural equations
modelling (SEM) using EQS 6.2 software. Previously, an explanatory factor analysis confirmed
one-dimensionality of the scales, Cronbach’s alpha was calculated to evaluate its internal
consistency and a confirmatory factor analysis was run to observe scales’ validity.
Findings: This research proves a significant positive and direct effect of IT implementation on
operations performance with 4 out of 6 flexibility dimensions (Machine, Labour, Material
handling and Volume). Mix and Routing flexibility dimensions show no significant impact on
firm performance.
Research limitations/implications: It is necessary to be cautious when generalizing this
findings these findings, as service firms were not part of the sample even when statistical results
prove robustness suggesting that the findings are quite reliable. Some flexibility dimensions show
no significant impact in performance (Routing and Mix flexibility). This is consistent with the fact
that these flexibility dimensions act as variability absorbers within the manufacturing process.
Future research lines: Future studies can focus on determining further internal and
environmental factors that affect operations flexibility according to specific sector characteristics.
Originality/value: This research proves a significant positive and direct effect of IT
implementation on operations performance. Results show not only the links between IT
implementation and operations performance, but also the magnitude of every impact. The model
considers IT integration as the degree of alignment that existing technology resources in a firm

Bend It Like Beckham: Ethnic Identity and Integration
We propose a theoretical framework to study the determinants of ethnic and religious identity along two distinct motivational processes which have been proposed in the social sciences: cultural conformity and cultural distinction. Under cultural conformity, ethnic identity is reduced by neighborhood integration, which weakens group loyalties and prejudices. On the contrary, under cultural distinction, ethnic minorities are more motivated in retaining their own distinctive cultural heritage the more integrated are the neighborhoods where they reside and work. Data on ethnic preferences and attitudes provided by the Fourth National Survey of Ethnic Minorities in the UK enables us to test the relative significance of these two identity processes. We find evidence consistent with intense ethnic and religious identity mostly formed as a cultural distinction mechanism. Modelling the integration of BP and IT using business process simulation
Information Technology (IT) and Business Process (BP) communities argues that the use of IT to support business processes can bring a number of benefits to the organisation. Most of these benefits, however, can only be seen after the implementation of such technology. Moreover, there are many cases where the benefits brought by the implementation of IT do not fulfil the organisation’s expectations. One reason of this may happen is because research in BP and IS domains show little indication of which modelling methods, techniques or tools can help organisations to foresee the benefits of the integration of IT with BP. This paper describes the insights gained during a UK funded research project, namely ASSESS-IT, which used simulation techniques to address this problem. Considering IT as a two layered system, namely Information Systems (IS) and Computer Networks (CN), ASSESS-IT aimed to depict the benefits that new IT may bring to the BP. This paper uses the outcomes derived from ASSESS-IT to suggest that, in some cases; the relationship between BP and IT could be better understood by looking at the relationship between BP and IS alone. It then proposes an alternative simulation framework, namely ISBPS, that provides the means to develop simulation models that portray quantifiable metrics of the integration of BP and IS, offering in this way an alternative mechanism that can help BP and IS analyst to foresee the benefits that the insertion of a given IS design may bring to the organisational processes
Faith Integration: What Does It Really Look Like?
Beginning with the excellent treatment of faith integration by Patrick Allen and Kenneth Badley (2012), based on the seminal work of Boyer (1997), this article delves into the issue of faith-learning integration on a discipline and classroom level. There are two major categories of integration that are considered: the single application, intended primarily for that day’s lesson, and focused on technical terminology or concepts; and the series that deals with larger issues beyond just those of the particular class being taught. Examples are provided for each, as well as the thought processes behind their generation. Resources are included at the end of the article that can aid readers in development of their own faith-learning applications
