Relationships of Job and Family Involvement, Family Social Support, and Work–Family Conflict with Job and Life Satisfaction

A model of the relationship between work and family that incorporates variables from both the work-family conflict and social support literatures was developed and empirically tested. This model related bidirectional work-family conflict, family instrumental and emotional social support, and job and family involvement to job and life satisfaction. Data came from 163 workers who were living with at least 1 family member. Results suggested that relationships between work and family can have an important effect on job and life satisfaction and that the level of involvement the worker assigns to work and family roles is associated with this relationship. The results also suggested that the relationship between work and family can be simultaneously characterized by conflict and support. Higher levels of work interfering with family predicted lower levels of family emotional and instrumental support. Evaluation of the Sustainability of an Intervention to Increase HIV Testing

BACKGROUND Sustainability—the routinization and institutionalization of processes that improve the quality of healthcare—is difficult to achieve and not often studied. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the sustainability of increased rates of HIV testing after implementation of a multi-component intervention in two Veterans Health Administration healthcare systems. DESIGN Quasi-experimental implementation study in which the effect of transferring responsibility to conduct the provider education component of the intervention from research to operational staff was assessed. PATIENTS Persons receiving healthcare between 2005 and 2006 (intervention year) and 2006 and 2007 (sustainability year). MEASUREMENTS Monthly HIV testing rate, stratified by frequency of clinic visits RESULTS The monthly adjusted testing rate increased from 2% at baseline to 6% at the end intervention year and then declined reaching 4% at the end of the sustainability year. However, the stratified, visit-specific testing rate for persons newly exposed to the intervention (i.e., having their first through third visits during the study period) increased throughout the intervention and sustainability years. Increases in the proportion of visits by patients who remained untested despite multiple, prior exposures to the intervention accounted for the aggregate attenuation of testing during the sustainability year. Overall, the percentage of patients who received an HIV test in the sustainability year was 11.6%, in the intervention year 11.1%, and in the pre-intervention year 5.0% CONCLUSIONS Provider education combined with informatics and organizational support had a sustainable effect on HIV testing rates. Luther\u27s Enchiridion as Resource for Spiritual Formation

(Excerpt) My purpose in this essay is to consider Luther\u27s Small Catechism as a resource for the spiritual formation of the faithful. That aim brings with it a number of automatic consequences. First, it requires that I take into account also Luther\u27s Large Catechism--that book of advice to pastors in the spiritual formation of Christians. Second, it requires that I invite you to pay attention to the original setting and intention of Luther in writing and publishing his catechisms at the end of the first decade of reformatory activity in Germany. Third, it requires that we consider the catechisms in their ecclesial context, that is, as a part of the confessional writings of the churches of the Augsburg Confession. Fourth, it suggests that we make clear just what is included when we speak of Luther\u27s Small Catechism; that is, we must give some attention to the more or less official content of that often-revised document. Fifth, it suggests that we let Luther\u27s prose speak, as much as possible, for itself; accordingly, a portion of this essay will simply be an attempt to do so, composed of a catena of citations from the catechisms. Finally, it invites us to offer some practical suggestions for the implementation of what is gained from what I hope is a sensitive reading of Luther\u27s manuals

Impact of Shelterbelts on Net Returns from Agricultural Production in Arid Western Rajasthan

This paper has documented the impact of shelterbelt on agricultural returns by collecting primary data from 80 farmers each in shelterbelt and non-shelterbelt areas. To decompose the total change in net returns, separate production functions have been estimated for shelterbelt and non-shelterbelt farms. The study has revealed an increase of 430.8 per cent in net returns due to shelterbelt plantation, in which shelterbelt technology has contributed 399.4 per cent and increase in use of complementary inputs, 31.4 per cent. In the change of 399.4 per cent, shelterbelt has accounted for 305.6 per cent, i.e. shifting from non- shelterbelt to shelterbelt and remaining 93.8 per cent has been due to inputs used by non-shelterbelt, which might be due to improvement in soil health.Agricultural Finance,

The Neue Nationalgalerie by Mies van der Rohe between Preservation and Minimal Improvement

The NeueNationalgalerie (1968) is considered an icon of the 20th century and part of the legacy of Mies van der Rohe. Almost 50 years after its construction the building showed some physiological decay; however, it has been considered obsolete due to the changing standards of use and comfort of an international art gallery affected also by a growing flux of visitors.The paper investigates the future of such an icon of modern architecture moving from some open issues of the intervention carried out by David Chipperfield started up in 2015 and now in an advanced stage. The refurbishment is pursuing the modernization of the building, but trying to match the historical values with the requirements of climate control and safety. The binomials memories/requirements and authenticity/form are at the base of the investigation. Although the intervention confirms the continuity of original use and it is aimed at keeping the image of the icon, it imposes transformations that belong to very different strategies, sometimes incompatible with the preservation of material meanings and values.
