Modelling Organisational Factors Influencing Sustainable Development Implementation Performance in Higher Education Institutions: An Interpretative Structural Modelling (ISM) Approach
open access articleGlobally, higher education institutions (HEIs) have continued to record varied sustainable development (SD) implementation performances. This variance has been attributed to the presence of certain organisational factors. Whereas previous studies have successfully identified the factors influencing the SD implementation performance in HEIs, few studies have attempted to explore the relationship between these factors and the influence of such a relationship on the management of SD implementation in HEIs. This is the objective of this study. Understandably, an understanding of such relationships will facilitate the development of appropriate frameworks for managing SD implementation in HEIs. Relying on a case study of a South African University of Technology (SAUoT), this study elicits data through a focus group discussion session. An interpretative structural modelling (ISM) focus group protocol indicating extant pair-wise relationships between identified organisational factor categories was extensively discussed. The emergent data was recorded, transcribed verbatim and subsequently analysed. The findings suggest that communication was critical to the prevalence of other factors, hence indicating its centrality to the effective management of SD implementation in HEIs. These findings will guide implementing agents in HEIs towards developing appropriate strategies for communicating SD implementation strategies
New geological models from the British Geological Survey
Over the last decade many Geological Survey Organisations worldwide have begun to communicate their geological understanding of the subsurface through 3D geological models, and the traditional printed geological map has been increasingly phased out. This shift of emphasis has been made possible by modern computers, geological modelling software and delivery tools. The role of the geologist has however remained essentially the same, to gather all the relevant evidence (maps, boreholes, geophysics etc) and to come up with a 3D interpretation of the geology.
Today BGS uses a range of modelling techniques varying from interpretative, deterministic to stochastic, depending on the geological situation and how much data is available. The main modelling software includes GSI3D, GOCAD-SKUA used for structural geological modelling, Petrel which is mainly used for reservoir modelling and also 2DMove for section restoration and fault dynamics
Learning from Hanjin Shipping’s failure:A holistic interpretation on its causes and reasons
Recent years have observed that the world shipping industry is reflected by the developments of unprecedented dynamism, instability and uncertainty. These developments in the industry have led its stakeholders to take such a counter-balancing measure as merges and acquisitions, and more aggressive and bigger scaled alliance establishment. One of the most striking incidents happened in the shipping industry was the bankruptcy of Hanjin Shipping. More frightful is the fact that the process and speed of Hanjin's collapse was remarkably brief and short given the size and scale of the company. The Hanjin case is unique in a sense that the company had been grown in line with its nation's economic development, which was (and still is) made by the export-oriented economic policy: the late shipping company had been evolved as having moved the nation's wealth. This paper aims (i) to holistically examine what and why it was happened as it was, by reviewing available literature as a way to synthesise, (ii) to interpret intrinsic and extrinsic causes, and internal and external reasons by establishing an interpretative structural model, and (iii) to discuss provisional findings as a way to offer an implication to transport policy in general and shipping policy in particular. In doing so, this paper attempts to provide industrial stakeholders with an insight from the failure as a lesson to be learned
Knowledge-based systems and geological survey
This personal and pragmatic review of the philosophy underpinning methods of geological surveying suggests that important influences of information technology have yet to make their impact. Early approaches took existing systems as metaphors, retaining the separation of maps, map explanations and information archives, organised around map sheets of fixed boundaries, scale and content. But system design should look ahead: a computer-based knowledge system for the same purpose can be built around hierarchies of spatial objects and their relationships, with maps as one means of visualisation, and information types linked as hypermedia and integrated in mark-up languages. The system framework and ontology, derived from the general geoscience model, could support consistent representation of the underlying concepts and maintain reference information on object classes and their behaviour. Models of processes and historical configurations could clarify the reasoning at any level of object detail and introduce new concepts such as complex systems. The up-to-date interpretation might centre on spatial models, constructed with explicit geological reasoning and evaluation of uncertainties. Assuming (at a future time) full computer support, the field survey results could be collected in real time as a multimedia stream, hyperlinked to and interacting with the other parts of the system as appropriate. Throughout, the knowledge is seen as human knowledge, with interactive computer support for recording and storing the information and processing it by such means as interpolating, correlating, browsing, selecting, retrieving, manipulating, calculating, analysing, generalising, filtering, visualising and delivering the results. Responsibilities may have to be reconsidered for various aspects of the system, such as: field surveying; spatial models and interpretation; geological processes, past configurations and reasoning; standard setting, system framework and ontology maintenance; training; storage, preservation, and dissemination of digital records
BIM semantic-enrichment for built heritage representation
In the built heritage context, BIM has shown difficulties in representing and managing the large and complex knowledge related to non-geometrical aspects of the heritage. Within this scope, this paper focuses on a domain-specific semantic-enrichment of BIM methodology, aimed at fulfilling semantic representation requirements of built heritage through Semantic Web technologies. To develop this semantic-enriched BIM approach, this research relies on the integration of a BIM environment with a knowledge base created through information ontologies. The result is knowledge base system - and a prototypal platform - that enhances semantic representation capabilities of BIM application to architectural heritage processes. It solves the issue of knowledge formalization in cultural heritage informative models, favouring a deeper comprehension and interpretation of all the building aspects. Its open structure allows future research to customize, scale and adapt the knowledge base different typologies of artefacts and heritage activities
The theoretical and methodological toolbox of urban economics: from and towards where?
After more than five decades since the recognition of the importance of a branch in Economics called Regional and Urban Economics, there is for sure sufficient scientific material for an ex-post evaluation of what has been achieved so far, where is the scientific frontier in this field, and what are the main open conceptual questions. The present contribution aims at providing such a "picture", by underlining, in a critical way, the results achieved and the challenges that still remain to be faced. It is not at all a first attempt in this direction: especially in the last decade, some doubts on the scientific achievements in the fields of Regional and Urban Economics, and more widely of Regional Science, were stressed, especially in the American academic world. These sciences were interpreted as going through a deep "scientific crisis", interpreted as a sort of downward slope in their "life cycle". Some scientific in-depth analyses have already been provided by regional scientists, rightly claiming that still much can be said and be produced in terms of both theoretical and empirical (modelling) elements. Our paper will start from those considerations, and provide a step further in the interpretation of the problems encountered by Regional and Urban Economics in the actual scientific world, and will strongly suggest that there are important signs of a reaffirmation of the discipline, given the recently strong renewed interest around the conept of territory, developed: - within other branches of the Economic theory. A clear example of this is the emergence of the "New Economic Geography" theory, widely anchored to some well known regional economic concepts. The same can be said for the recent concept of knowledge spillover of the Industrial Economists, in which the innovative diffusion process is largely dependent on geographical distance among innovative actors; - with traditionally related scientific fields, such as Urban Planning and Geography, for the development of a unified framework of analysis for territorial economic processes; - with sociologists, on the concept of "social capital", related to the interaction between social and economic elements for the explanation of the processes of knowledge creation at the local level. In all these cases, there is still place for a more in-depth cooperation among scientists, with the aim to achieve a more in-depth knowledge of theoretical concepts; moreover, in all these cases, there is still place for regional economists to strengthen their role within the international interdisciplinary arena. The paper will highlight these cases, and strengthen the reasons for this statement.
Characterisation of porous solids using small-angle scattering and NMR cryoporometry
The characteristics of several porous systems have been studied by the use of small-angle neutron scattering [SANS] and nuclear magnetic resonance [NMR] techniques. The measurements reveal different characteristics for sol-gel silicas, activated carbons and ordered mesoporous silicas of the MCM and SBA type. Good agreement is obtained between gas adsorption measurements and the NMR and SANS results for pore sizes above 10 nm. Recent measurements of the water/ice phase transformation in SBA silicas by neutron diffraction are also presented and indicate a complex relationship that will require more detailed treatment in terms of the possible effects of microporosity in the silica substrate. The complementarity of the different methods is emphasised and there is brief discussion of issues related to possible future developments
Implication of two new paradigms for futures studies
The paper considers the emergence of two recent perspectives in futures work. One is evolutionary futures studies. The other is critical futures studies. After describing aspects of
each, the paper considers them as alternative rival paradigms in relation to criteria that include: the role of the human being as a subject, the role of interpretation and differences in methodological premises. It concludes that both have contributed to the development of futures methods but that a number of theoretical and methodological problems still remain unsolved
Identification through technical analysis : A study of charting and UK non-professional investors
The usefulness of technical analysis, or charting, has been questioned because it flies in the face of the 'random walk' and tests present conflicting results. We examine chartists' decision-making techniques and derive a taxonomy of charting strategies based on investors' market ontologies and calculative strategies. This distinguishes between trend-seekers and pattern-seekers, and trading as a system or an art. We argue that interpretative activity plays a more important role than previously thought and suggest that charting's main appeal for users lies in its power as a heuristic device regardless of its effectiveness at generating returns.PostprintPeer reviewe
