6% of online adults are reddit users

This report finds that American young men are especially likely to visit the “front page of the internet.”OverviewSix percent of online adults are reddit users, according to a nationally representative survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. This is our first survey that specifically examines reddit as a standalone platform, and it finds that young men are especially likely to visit the site. Some 15% of male internet users ages 18-29 say that they use reddit, compared with 5% of women in the same age range and 8% of men ages 30-49.About the survey The results in this report are based on data from telephone interviews conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International from April 17 to May 19, 2013, among a sample of 2,252 adults, age 18 and older.  Telephone interviews were conducted in English and Spanish by landline (1,125) and cell phone (1,127, including 571 without a landline phone). For results based on the total sample, one can say with 95% confidence that the error attributable to sampling is plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.  For results based on Internet users (n=1,895), the margin of sampling error is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points

Initial Experiences of Building Secure Access to Patient Confidential Data via the Internet

A project to enable health care professionals (GPs, practice nurses and diabetes nurse specialists) to access, via the Internet, confidential patient data held on a secondary care (hospital) diabetes information system, has been implemented. We describe the application that we chose to distribute (a diabetes register); the security mechanisms we used to protect the data (a public key infrastructure with strong encryption and digitally signed messages, plus a firewall); the reasons for the implementation decisions we made; the validation testing that we performed and the preliminary results of the pilot implementation

A Grammar for Reproducible and Painless Extract-Transform-Load Operations on Medium Data

Many interesting data sets available on the Internet are of a medium size---too big to fit into a personal computer's memory, but not so large that they won't fit comfortably on its hard disk. In the coming years, data sets of this magnitude will inform vital research in a wide array of application domains. However, due to a variety of constraints they are cumbersome to ingest, wrangle, analyze, and share in a reproducible fashion. These obstructions hamper thorough peer-review and thus disrupt the forward progress of science. We propose a predictable and pipeable framework for R (the state-of-the-art statistical computing environment) that leverages SQL (the venerable database architecture and query language) to make reproducible research on medium data a painless reality.Comment: 30 pages, plus supplementary material

Les bases de données "Ressources génétiques" sur Internet : possibilités d'accès, contraintes actuelles et perspectives

Cette étude recense les bases de données sur Internet, de même que les sources d'information concernant la gestion informatique des ressources génétiques, qu'elles soient d'origine animale, végétale ou microbienne. Grâce à une interrogation thématique par des moteurs de recherche, un grand nombre de références a été obtenu, donnant accès à des serveurs traitant de bases de données sur les ressources génétiques. Leur analyse a conduit à identifier les différents organismes diffusant ce genre d'information sur Internet, les pays les plus en pointe sur ce sujet et les types de ressources génétiques les plus fréquemment diffusées par ce support. INTERNET ET LA FRACTURE DES TYPES DE SOCIABILITE

version preprintOn a désormais bien référencé quelques grandes variables qui rendent compte des clivages dans l'accès à Internet : niveau de revenu, niveau de diplôme, âge, zone de résidence, catégorie socioprofessionnelle. Il est plus difficile ensuite de savoir quelles sont les variables qui sont déterminantes " toutes choses égales par ailleurs ". En utilisant une enquête statistique (n=5603) produite par l'INSEE en 2005 nous établissons ici que le revenu et la zone de résidence, variables économiques les plus évidentes, ne jouent qu'un rôle secondaire. Nous proposons alors une lecture de la fracture numérique comme reposant sur un clivage dans les modes de sociabilité : les personnes pratiquant plus intensément que les autres une sociabilité en réseau utilisent Internet plus facilement que les autres. L'usage d'Internet favorise à son tour ce type de sociabilité. Il y a donc une fracture dans les types de sociabilité entretenue par l'usage d'Internet

Internet-based CBT for depression with and without telephone tracking in a national helpline: randomised controlled trial

BACKGROUND Telephone helplines are frequently and repeatedly used by individuals with chronic mental health problems and web interventions may be an effective tool for reducing depression in this population. AIM To evaluate the effectiveness of a 6 week, web-based cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) intervention with and without proactive weekly telephone tracking in the reduction of depression in callers to a helpline service. METHOD 155 callers to a national helpline service with moderate to high psychological distress were recruited and randomised to receive either Internet CBT plus weekly telephone follow-up; Internet CBT only; weekly telephone follow-up only; or treatment as usual. RESULTS Depression was lower in participants in the web intervention conditions both with and without telephone tracking compared to the treatment as usual condition both at post intervention and at 6 month follow-up. Telephone tracking provided by a lay telephone counsellor did not confer any additional advantage in terms of symptom reduction or adherence. CONCLUSIONS A web-based CBT program is effective both with and without telephone tracking for reducing depression in callers to a national helpline.
