The essay sets out to explain how the meme-sharing mechanism on the Internet is the reflection of human psyche. Starting from Richard Dawkins’ definition of meme, the analysis focuses on the search of what make Internet memes go viral, with the supporting theories of Richard Brodie about the effect of memes on human mind and Limor Shifman’s studies about memes in digital culture. Having described the elements of adaptability, accessibility, belonging, exclusivity, nonsense, irony, cuteness, contrast, surprise, political incorrectness, and stereotype, meme genres such as image macros, videos and photoshop-edited pictures are analyzed across the spectrum of such factors. The result is subsequently compared to the ones obtained by Shifman in 2014, in order to find common elements to outline a spreading pattern. The third and last section focus on the effects of memes on human brain, starting from Brodie’s “button pushing” theory, which refers to many mechanisms such as “repetition”, “cognitive dissonance”, and “creating value” that trigger humans’ most basic instincts. By comparing such theory with Shifman’s about memes providing freedom of expression, the suggested solution concentrate on raising awareness the real potential of memes among people and providing them the means to make memes work for a more conscious society

This study examines how internet memes in Indonesia are constructed as a new form of communication in the digital era that are used in conveying diverse perspectives and reaching crossed aspects such as politics, economics, social and cultures. Meme is a type of digital artifact that gains more popularity in Indonesia recently, and it has been used extensively in voicing social commentaries and political aspirations, which usually contains the mix of humor and satire. Following Dawkin’s (1976) assertion that the mutation, replication, and propagation of memes depended on the background of host culture (the meme creator), the study stated that although internet memes are dispersed as a form of digital artifacts, their creations are also based on to unique and distinct digital cultures, especially in Indonesia. Following the original concept from Dawkins, a number of recent studies have used the concept of fidelity, fecundity, and longevity as a way to evaluate the successfulness of memes production as digital artifacts. The previous research clearly showed that derivation and replication are the nature of memes. Rintel (2013) further stated that imitation and replication of memes follow certain patterns which he stated as templatibility. Pattern of templatibility can consist of various structures such as image macros, snowclones. exploitable, comic rage and advice animal. Based on the corpus data of 500 Indonesian memes taken during August-October 2017, researcher used Visual Content Analysis technique to identify Indonesia’s internet memes structure. This study found that internet memes have unwritten rules that connected each memes replications. The rules can be spelled out through structural relation that parsed meme structures and contextual relation that related each replication of one big concept. This study found three main categories of memes in Indonesia, those are macro images, collages meme, and meme kamus. Furthermore, researcher conducted in-depth interview of four meme creators in Indonesia to understand how an idea is transformed and spread on the internet. The study found that the different visual cultural backgrounds in Indonesia influence the meme creators to have their own style and successfulness indicator in the creation and dissemination of meme content. Meme in Indonesia are evolving inconsistently and more comic-like structures, or called comic memes. Social media as the most popular channel for the distribution of memes in Indonesia put the indicator of the meme’s successfulness in Indonesia. (The linguistic, psychological and psycholinguistic features of understanding of internet memes texts are analyzes in this article. Internet meme is considered as a form of internet text in multimedia form. Meme is a unit of cultural inheritance. Duration of meme popularity shows, from our point of view its importance in the culture and language of the epoch. Depending on the author’s competence and his plan memes can be perceived unambiguously or allow variants of interpretation. Internet memes understanding, like other internet texts, is due to the peculiarities of hypertext and use of deviant speech units. An example of a neutral interpretation of the image «The Witcher» is a meme «S dobrym utrom». An example of a critical interpretation of the image is memes «Ya devushkam nravlus. Kto skazal» and «Napichkannyj principami, slovno lis’ja shuba blohami». The linguistic prerequisite for understanding variability is the use of deviant speech units in the internet memes texts. It is possible to divide them on speech units insufficient for their correct interpretation, surplus and incongruous. Examples of memes admitting variants of interpretations are presented in «manga fejta vosstala iz mertvyh. horosho ja reshu vashu problemu», «hristos voskres. horosho ja reshu vashu problemu», «korolevskij Ved’mak», «ljutik zalogin’sja», «prednaznachenie» and other. The number of Internet memes of «The Witcher» indicates that this image has taken a firm place in modern popular culture. Various estimates and variations of internet memes demonstrate phenotypic development of the idea of «The Witcher». In different contexts this meme gets specific interpretations depending on the external conditions, cultural backgrounds and authorial intention.

The advent of social media has provided data and insights about how people relate to information and culture. While information is composed by bits and its fundamental building bricks are relatively well understood, the same cannot be said for culture. The fundamental cultural unit has been defined as a "meme". Memes are defined in literature as specific fundamental cultural traits, that are floating in their environment together. Just like genes carried by bodies, memes are carried by cultural manifestations like songs, buildings or pictures. Memes are studied in their competition for being successfully passed from one generation of minds to another, in different ways. In this paper we choose an empirical approach to the study of memes. We downloaded data about memes from a well-known website hosting hundreds of different memes and thousands of their implementations. From this data, we empirically describe the behavior of these memes. We statistically describe meme occurrences in our dataset and we delineate their fundamental traits, along with those traits that make them more or less apt to be successful
