Clinostomum marginatum metacercaria: Incidence in Smallmouth Bass from a North Arkansas Stream and in vitro Oxygen Consumption Studies
Small mouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui) captured from Crooked Creek (Marion Co., Arkansas) in the summers of 1977 and 1987 were found to have a high incidence of infection with the metacercaria of Clinostomum marginatum (yellow grub). Of 41 fish collected in 1977, 32 (78%) were found infected with metacercariae with some fish containing large numbers of parasites. The number of larvae per fish ranged from 1 to 184, with an average of 23.2 ± 38 per smallmouth. Eighty-six percent of the bass collected in 1987 were found positive for C. marginatum. The number of metacercariae per fish ranged from 1 to 227 with an average of 32.7 ± 54 per fish. Fish from both collection groups ranged in size from 12 to 34 cm. No significant correlation could be found between the number of metacercariae per fish and the length of the host. Using metacercariae removed from host tissue, the effect on oxygen consumption by glucose, serotonin and insulin, singularly or in combination, was measured by manometric methods. Glucose alone did not stimulate oxygen utilization, serotonin alone and with glucose was stimulatory, and insulin with glucose also increased oxygen consumption
Optimisation of the spark gap parameters for high powered ultrasound applications
There is considerable interest in the industrial and commercial applications of high power ultrasound (HPU) generated using pulsed power techniques. These applications include metal peening, the treatment of ores and minerals before extraction, drilling technologies and the comminution and recovery of waste materials. In all of these applications, it is important to optimise the parameters of the discharge causing the shock wave in the working medium to maximise the efficiency of the treatment. In a research project at the University of Strathclyde, some applications of HPU to the treatment of waste to assist in recycling have been investigated. Two systems have been considered, slag from the manufacture of stainless steel and bottle glass. With the slag material, it is intended to separate stainless steel from the silicate matrix to permit its recovery. With the bottle glass, the intention is comminution of the material to allow it to be recycled in a more valuable form. Measurements of the efficiency of these processes have been made in terms of the mass of material processed versus the energy input as the parameters of the discharge gap have been varied. In parallel with this work, measurements have been made using pinducer sensors to determine the energy in HPU pulses generated by discharges under identical conditions. Correlations are made between the efficiency of material treatment and the intensity of the HPU pulse measured in the far field. It is hoped that this approach will allow the optimal gap parameters to be determined using pinducer measurements rather than time consuming trials based around materials processing
Discovering Restricted Regular Expressions with Interleaving
Discovering a concise schema from given XML documents is an important problem
in XML applications. In this paper, we focus on the problem of learning an
unordered schema from a given set of XML examples, which is actually a problem
of learning a restricted regular expression with interleaving using positive
example strings. Schemas with interleaving could present meaningful knowledge
that cannot be disclosed by previous inference techniques. Moreover, inference
of the minimal schema with interleaving is challenging. The problem of finding
a minimal schema with interleaving is shown to be NP-hard. Therefore, we
develop an approximation algorithm and a heuristic solution to tackle the
problem using techniques different from known inference algorithms. We do
experiments on real-world data sets to demonstrate the effectiveness of our
approaches. Our heuristic algorithm is shown to produce results that are very

A key to the known larvae of south american Elmidae (Coleoptera: Byrrhoidea), with a description of the mature larva of Macrelmis saltensis Manzo.
A key to identify the known mature larvae of the South American genera of the family Elmidae is provided. The key includes seven genera presently assigned to the subfamily Larainae and 15 genera assigned to the subfamily Elminae. New distributional data for all genera and a checklist of described larvae are also included. The mature larva of Macrelmis saltensis Manzo is described and illustrated for the first time, and compared to other known larvae of the granigera species-group. Distributional notes for M. saltensis increase its known range to the north, this being the first citation of the species for Bolivia. Retrospective revaluation as simple associative learning
Backward blocking, unovershadowing and backward conditioned inhibition are examples of "retrospective revaluation" phenomena, that have been suggested to involve more than simple associative learning. Models of these phenomena have thus employed additional concepts, e.g. appealing to attentional effects or more elaborate learning mechanisms. I show that a suitable representation of stimuli, paired with a careful analysis of the discriminations faced by animals, leads to an account of these and other phenomena in terms of a simple "elemental" model of associative learning, with essentially the same learning mechanism as the Rescorla and Wagner (1972) model. I conclude with a discussion of some implications for theories of learning
Emergent Innovation and Sustainable Knowledge Co-creation. A Socio-Epistemological Approach to “Innovation from within”
Innovation has become one of the most important issues in modern knowledge society. As opposed to radical innovation this paper introduces the concept of Emergent Innovation: this approach tries to balance and integrate the demand both for radically new knowledge and at the same time for an organic development from within the organization. From a more general perspective one can boil down this problem to the question of how to cope with the new and with profound change (in knowledge). This question will be dealt with in the first part of the paper. As an implication the alternative approach of Emergent Innovation will be presented in the second part: this approach looks at innovation as a socio-epistemological process of “learning from the future” in order to create (radically) new knowledge in a sustainable and “organic” manner. Scalar Resonances in Axially Symmetric Spacetimes
We study properties of resonant solutions to the scalar wave equation in
several axially symmetric spacetimes. We prove that non-axial resonant modes do
not exist neither in the Lanczos dust cylinder, the extreme BTZ
spacetime nor in a class of simple rotating wormhole solutions. Moreover, we
find unstable solutions to the wave equation in the Lanczos dust cylinder and
in the region of the extreme BTZ spacetime, two solutions that
possess closed timelike curves. Similarities with previous results obtained for

A Cascade Neural Network Architecture investigating Surface Plasmon Polaritons propagation for thin metals in OpenMP
Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) confined along metal-dielectric interface
have attracted a relevant interest in the area of ultracompact photonic
circuits, photovoltaic devices and other applications due to their strong field
confinement and enhancement. This paper investigates a novel cascade neural
network (NN) architecture to find the dependance of metal thickness on the SPP
propagation. Additionally, a novel training procedure for the proposed cascade
NN has been developed using an OpenMP-based framework, thus greatly reducing
