Simulation of Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM) with Variation of Process Parameters

A previously developed and verified thermal model for Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM) was used to investigate the effects of various processing parameters on the temperature profile in a LOM part during the build cycle. The mathematical model, based on 3-dimensional transient heat conduction in a rectangular geometry LOM part, allows calculation ofthe transient temperature distribution within the part during the application of a new layer as well as during other periods ofthe LOM build cycle. The parameters roller temperature, roller speed, chamber air temperature, base plate temperature, and laser cutting time were independently varied, and the LOM process response simulated. The results were analyzed in order to gain insight into potential strategies for intelligent process control.Mechanical Engineerin

Citizen Soldiers: The North Carolina Volunteers and the War on Poverty

During the summers of 1964 and 1965, more than 300 college students fanned out across the state of North Carolina in a bold campaign to defeat poverty and, as they saw it, to uplift the poor. Korstad and Leloudis trace the history of the North Carolina Fund\u27s Volunteers program, provide an analysis of the contribution that those students made to fighting poverty in the state, and evaluate the impact of that experience on the lives of the Volunteers themselves

A Computational And Theoretical Exploration of the St. Petersburg Paradox

This thesis displays a sample distribution, generated from both a simulation (for large n) by computer program and explicitly calculated (for smaller n), that is not governed by the Central Limit Theorem and, in fact seems to display chaotic behavior. To our knowledge, the explicit calculation of the sample distribution function is new. This project outlines the results that have found a relation to number theory in a probabilistic game that has perplexed mathematicians for hundreds of years
