Comparison of two sampling protocols and four home-range estimators using radio-tracking data from urban badgers Meles meles
Radio-telemetry is often the method of choice for studies of species whose behaviour is difficult to observe directly. However, considerable debate has ensued about the best way of deriving home-range estimates. In recent years, kernel estimators have become the most widely used method, together with the oldest and simplest method, the minimum convex polygon (MCP). More recently, it has been suggested that the local convex hull (LCH) might be more appropriate than kernel methods in cases where an animal’s home range includes a priori inaccessible areas. Yet another method, the Brownian bridge (BB), explicitly uses autocorrelated data to determine movement paths and, ultimately, home ranges or migration routes of animals. Whereas several studies have used simulation techniques to compare these different methods, few have used data from real animals. We used radio-telemetric data from urban badgers Meles meles to compare two sampling protocols (10-minute vs at least 30-minute inter-fix intervals) and four home-range estimators (MCP, fixed kernels (FK), LCH and BB). We used a multi-response permutation procedure and randomisation tests to compare overall patterns of fixes and degree of overlap of home ranges estimated using data from different sampling protocols, and a general linear model to compare the influence of sampling protocols and home-range estimator on the size of habitat patches. The shape of the estimated home ranges was influenced by sampling protocol in some cases. By contrast, the sizes and proportions of different habitats within home ranges were influenced by estimator type but not by sampling protocol. LCH performed consistently better than FK, and is especially appropriate for patchy study areas containing frequent no-go zones. However, we recommend using LCH in combination with other methods to estimate total range size, because LCH tended to produce smaller estimates than any other method. Diffusion and Home Range Parameters from Rodent Population Measurements in Panama
Simple random walk considerations are used to interpret rodent population
data collected in Hantavirus-related investigations in Panama regarding the
short-tailed cane mouse, \emph{Zygodontomys brevicauda}. The diffusion constant
of mice is evaluated to be of the order of (and larger than) 200 meters squared
per day. The investigation also shows that the rodent mean square displacement
saturates in time, indicating the existence of a spatial scale which could, in
principle, be the home range of the rodents. This home range is concluded to be
of the order of 70 meters. Theoretical analysis is provided for interpreting
animal movement data in terms of an interplay of the home ranges, the diffusion
constant, and the size of the grid used to monitor the movement. The study
gives impetus to a substantial modification of existing theory of the spread of
the Hantavirus epidemic which has been based on simple diffusive motion of the
rodents, and additionally emphasizes the importance for developing more
accurate techniques for the measurement of rodent movement.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
Using Radio Telemetry and Geographic Information Systems to Map and Estimate the Home Range Size and Daily Movement Patterns of Female Cheetahs on Namibia’s Commercial Farmland
Fewer than 10,000 cheetahs remain in the wild in Sub-Saharan Africa.Namibia has the largest population, estimated to be 4,000 cheetahs. Habitat fragmentation and prey depletion from human expansion for agriculture have pushed 90 percent of cheetahs to reside on commercial farmland where there is an absence of larger predators, but where there is conflict with the livestock farmers. Radio telemetry was used to investigate the seasonal variation in home range size among nine female cheetahs on commercial farmlands on or near the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Otjiwarongo, Namibia. ArcGIS 10.3 and Geospatial Modeling Environment were used to calculate the home range size. This was estimated for the overall, annual, monthly, and seasonal variants for each individual cheetah. Nine female cheetahs were tracked in this study; six ofthem were rewilded and three of them were wild. The wild cheetahs had a larger home range estimation compared to the rewilded cheetahs. The home range size and average distance moved (km) between GPS locations had no significance between the seasons basedon the statistical program R 3.2.1. These results in combination with further research can help formulate a long-term conservation plan for the remaining and rewilded cheetah population on Namibia\u27s commercial farmland
The home range of the signal crayfish in a British lowland river
The signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana), a native of north-western North America, is now a common resident in some British fresh waters following its introduction to England in 1976 (Lowery & Holdich 1988). In 1984, signal crayfish were introduced into the River Great Ouse, the major lowland river in southern central England, where they have established a large breeding population. This study examines two sites near Thornborough Weir. For the measurement and description of home range a new eletronic microchip system and a modified capture-mark-recapture method were employed. Signal crayfish were marked or tagged to see if they gradually moved away from their burrows. This method proved to be successful for estimating population densities when a section of river is divided into several equidistant linear ”locations”
Home range and habitat use by Kemp's Ridley turtles in West-Central Florida
The Kemp's ridley turtle (Lepidochelys kempii) is an endangered species whose recovery depends in part on
the identification and protection of required habitats. We used radio and sonic telemetry on subadult Kemp's ridley
turtles to investigate home-range size and habitat use in the coastal waters of west-central Florida from 1994 to
1996. We tracked 9 turtles during May-August up to 70 days after release and fou.ld they occupied 5-30 km2 foraging
ranges. Compositional analyses indicated that turtles used rock outcroppings in their foraging ranges at a
significantly higher proportion than expected. based on availability within the study area. Additionally. turtles used
live bottom (e.g .• sessile invertebrates) and green macroalgae habitats significantly more than seagrass habitat. Similar
studies are needed through'mt the Kemp's ridley turtles' range to investigate regional and stage-specific differences
in habitat use. which can then be used to conserve important foraging areas
Development and trial of a methodology for the quantification and evaluation of home composting in Palmerston North, New Zealand : a thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Environmental Management (without major) at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand
Home composting and commercial composting can be regarded as part of the Municipal Solid Waste Management system. Currently, in Palmerston North and more broadly in New Zealand, home composting plays an important, but an unquantified role in waste diversion. In Palmerston North, the quantity of organic waste diverted from landfill via home composting is not captured in the City’s official ‘waste assessment’ or recorded in the ‘waste management and minimisation plan’. Additionally, there appears to be little local social and technical data on why, who, when, what and how well home composting is practised. The aim of this study was to develop and implement a methodology for a mixed-method quantitative-qualitative study for the quantification and evaluation of home composting practices in Palmerston North. The development process for the research methodology drew upon an international literature review of scientific research, a range of municipal best practice guidelines for home composting and referenced elements of the New Zealand composting standard. The data collection for this study involved a combined telephone and door-to-door survey of 300 households (that is, approximately 1% of occupied dwellings, randomly selected from across all 15 suburbs in the City). To support the physical data collection, a novel home composting evaluation tool was also developed and trialled for empirical and quality assurance evaluation. The overall participation rate recorded in the present study (64%) was high and both data collection methods proved to be viable, yielding positive results. 36% of the households who participated in the present study were home composters which could mean that about 10,761 households in the occupied dwellings of the City practise home composting. At the time of the survey, it appears that nearly 4005 tonnes of organic waste was being treated via home composting processes. The results also indicated positive quality assurance of the home composting process and the resulting compost in the City. Whilst most of the study participants have a positive experience towards home composting, nuisance insects, rodents and odour problems were reported as issues. In terms of motivation around current and future home composting practices, a range of support options appears to be available for Councils to encourage and enhance this positive environmental practice
Survival and Growth of American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) hatchlings after artificial incubation and repatriation
Hatchling American Alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) produced from artificially incubated
wild eggs were returned to their natal areas (repatriated). We compared artificially incubated and
repatriated hatchlings released within and outside the maternal alligator’s home range with naturally
incubated hatchlings captured and released within the maternal alligator’s home range on Lake Apopka,
Lake Griffin, and Orange Lake in Florida. We used probability of recapture and total length at approximately
nine months after hatching as indices of survival and growth rates. Artificially incubated hatchlings released
outside of the maternal alligator’s home range had lower recapture probabilities than either naturally
incubated hatchlings or artificially incubated hatchlings released near the original nest site. Recapture
probabilities of other treatments did not differ significantly. Artificially incubated hatchlings were
approximately 6% shorter than naturally incubated hatchlings at approximately nine months after hatching.
We concluded that repatriation of hatchlings probably would not have long-term effects on populations
because of the resiliency of alligator populations to alterations of early age-class survival and growth rates of
the magnitude that we observed. Repatriation of hatchlings may be an economical alternative to repatriation
of older juveniles for population restoration. However, the location of release may affect subsequent survival
and growth
