    Higher-order thinking in foreign language learning

    A project is being conducted in English as a foreign language (EFL), involving eleventh graders in formal and non-formal learning contexts, in a Portuguese high school. The goal of this study is to examine the impact of cognitive tools and higher-order thinking processes on the learning of EFL and achievement of larger processes oriented to action, involving problem solving, decision-making and creation of new products. YouTube videos emerge as cognitive tools in the process. Final results show major differences concerning learners’ achievements. Learners have developed higher-order processes oriented to action, in particular their ability to learn, to transfer the skills developed to different contexts and apply them effectively in EFL communicative situations.     O desenvolvimento económico e social assenta, em grande medida, no conhecimento humano. A forma como as pessoas trabalham e se envolvem requer uma postura de aprendizagem ao longo da vida e de participação. O papel do ensino superior é fundamental, não apenas para estímulo ao desenvolvimento de competências cognitivas, mas também para o desenvolvimento de competências funcionais e sociais. Neste trabalho descreve-se a aplicação de Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) numa turma de Desenvolvimento de Software I num Curso Técnico Superior Profissional para a aprendizagem da programação, verificando-se como os alunos participam e colaboram na construção do seu conhecimento. The way people work and collaborate demand a posture of participation and of life-long learning.     Higher Order Thinking Skills Assessment Towards Critical Thinking on Mathematics Lesson

    The research was intended for analyzing the effectiveness of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) assessment towards critical thinking skills of high school students in Mathematics lesson. The subjects of this study were students XII-IPA class, SMA Negeri 8 Denpasar, the academic in 2017/2018. Sample selection in this study was applied random sampling technique. The research design used was post-test only control group design. The critical thinking of the student\u27s skill was obtained through tests using HOTS assessment. The data were obtained and analyzed using t-test (2-tailed). The analysis results were to show that HOTS assessment could improve student\u27s critical thinking skills in mathematics lesson effectively
