A Survey on Dialogue Systems: Recent Advances and New Frontiers
Dialogue systems have attracted more and more attention. Recent advances on
dialogue systems are overwhelmingly contributed by deep learning techniques,
which have been employed to enhance a wide range of big data applications such
as computer vision, natural language processing, and recommender systems. For
dialogue systems, deep learning can leverage a massive amount of data to learn
meaningful feature representations and response generation strategies, while
requiring a minimum amount of hand-crafting. In this article, we give an
overview to these recent advances on dialogue systems from various perspectives
and discuss some possible research directions. In particular, we generally
divide existing dialogue systems into task-oriented and non-task-oriented
models, then detail how deep learning techniques help them with representative
algorithms and finally discuss some appealing research directions that can

Personalizing Dialogue Agents via Meta-Learning
Existing personalized dialogue models use human designed persona descriptions
to improve dialogue consistency. Collecting such descriptions from existing
dialogues is expensive and requires hand-crafted feature designs. In this
paper, we propose to extend Model-Agnostic Meta-Learning (MAML)(Finn et al.,
2017) to personalized dialogue learning without using any persona descriptions.
Our model learns to quickly adapt to new personas by leveraging only a few
dialogue samples collected from the same user, which is fundamentally different
from conditioning the response on the persona descriptions. Empirical results
on Persona-chat dataset (Zhang et al., 2018) indicate that our solution
outperforms non-meta-learning baselines using automatic evaluation metrics, and

Promoting religious freedom and peace through cross-cultural dialogue
This report contributes to the debate on the international religious freedom agenda and suggests that the simultaneous promotion of religious freedom on the one hand and cross-cultural and inter-religious dialogue on the other can represent a consensual and effective platform to combat intolerance, discrimination, and violence based on religion or belief and to build in the long term a peaceful socio-political environment
Dialogue Act Modeling for Automatic Tagging and Recognition of Conversational Speech
We describe a statistical approach for modeling dialogue acts in
conversational speech, i.e., speech-act-like units such as Statement, Question,
Backchannel, Agreement, Disagreement, and Apology. Our model detects and
predicts dialogue acts based on lexical, collocational, and prosodic cues, as
well as on the discourse coherence of the dialogue act sequence. The dialogue
model is based on treating the discourse structure of a conversation as a
hidden Markov model and the individual dialogue acts as observations emanating
from the model states. Constraints on the likely sequence of dialogue acts are
modeled via a dialogue act n-gram. The statistical dialogue grammar is combined
with word n-grams, decision trees, and neural networks modeling the
idiosyncratic lexical and prosodic manifestations of each dialogue act. We
develop a probabilistic integration of speech recognition with dialogue
modeling, to improve both speech recognition and dialogue act classification
accuracy. Models are trained and evaluated using a large hand-labeled database
of 1,155 conversations from the Switchboard corpus of spontaneous
human-to-human telephone speech. We achieved good dialogue act labeling
accuracy (65% based on errorful, automatically recognized words and prosody,
and 71% based on word transcripts, compared to a chance baseline accuracy of

Deep Active Learning for Dialogue Generation
We propose an online, end-to-end, neural generative conversational model for
open-domain dialogue. It is trained using a unique combination of offline
two-phase supervised learning and online human-in-the-loop active learning.
While most existing research proposes offline supervision or hand-crafted
reward functions for online reinforcement, we devise a novel interactive
learning mechanism based on hamming-diverse beam search for response generation
and one-character user-feedback at each step. Experiments show that our model
inherently promotes the generation of semantically relevant and interesting
responses, and can be used to train agents with customized personas, moods and

A Review of Evaluation Techniques for Social Dialogue Systems
In contrast with goal-oriented dialogue, social dialogue has no clear measure
of task success. Consequently, evaluation of these systems is notoriously hard.
In this paper, we review current evaluation methods, focusing on automatic
metrics. We conclude that turn-based metrics often ignore the context and do
not account for the fact that several replies are valid, while end-of-dialogue
rewards are mainly hand-crafted. Both lack grounding in human perceptions.Comment: 2 page
