    Generalized Poincar\'{e} Half-Planes

In this note, we give some generalisations of the classical Poincar\'{e} upper half-plane, which is the most popular model of hyperbolic plane geometry. For this, we replace the circular arcs by elliptical arcs with center on the xx-axis, and foci on the xx-axis or on the lines perpendicular to the xx-axis at the center, in the upper half-plane. Thus, we obtain a class of generalized upper half-planes with infinite number of members. Furthermore we show that every generalized Poincar\'{e} upper half-plane geometry is a neutral geometry satisfying the hyperbolic axiom. That is, it satisfies also all axioms of the Euclidean plane geometry except the parallelism.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Half-Monopole in the Weinberg-Salam Model

We present new axially symmetric half-monopole configuration of the SU(2)×\timesU(1) Weinberg-Salam model of electromagnetic and weak interactions. The half-monopole configuration possesses net magnetic charge 2π/e2\pi/e which is half the magnetic charge of a Cho-Maison monopole. The electromagnetic gauge potential is singular along the negative zz-axis. However the total energy is finite and increases only logarithmically with increasing Higgs field self-coupling constant λ1/2\lambda^{1/2} at sin2θW=0.2312\sin^2\theta_W=0.2312. In the U(1) magnetic field, the half-monopole is just a one dimensional finite length line magnetic charge extending from the origin r=0r=0 and lying along the negative zz-axis. In the SU(2) 't Hooft magnetic field, it is a point magnetic charge located at r=0r=0. The half-monopole possesses magnetic dipole moment that decreases exponentially fast with increasing Higgs field self-coupling constant λ1/2\lambda^{1/2} at sin2θW=0.2312\sin^2\theta_W=0.2312.Comment: 14 pages, 3 Figure

Growth of fat slits and dispersionless KP hierarchy

A "fat slit" is a compact domain in the upper half plane bounded by a curve with endpoints on the real axis and a segment of the real axis between them. We consider conformal maps of the upper half plane to the exterior of a fat slit parameterized by harmonic moments of the latter and show that they obey an infinite set of Lax equations for the dispersionless KP hierarchy. Deformation of a fat slit under changing a particular harmonic moment can be treated as a growth process similar to the Laplacian growth of domains in the whole plane. This construction extends the well known link between solutions to the dispersionless KP hierarchy and conformal maps of slit domains in the upper half plane and provides a new, large family of solutions.Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures, typos correcte

Cosmological X-Ray Flashes from Off-Axis Jets

    Get PDF
The of the cosmological X-ray flashes detected by WFC/BeppoSAX is calculated theoretically in a simple jet model. The total emission energy from the jet is assumed to be constant. We find that if the jet opening half-angle is smaller than 0.03 radian, off-axis emission from sources at z<~4 can be seen. The theoretical is less than 0.4, which is consistent with the observational result of 0.27+/-0.16 at the 1-sigma level. This suggests that the off-axis GRB jet with the small opening half-angle at the cosmological distance can be identified as the cosmological X-ray flash.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures aipTEX, contribution to the 2003 GRB Conference, held at Santa Fe, N
