Fish oil supplements, longevity and aging

    Get PDF
Fish oil supplementation is of great medical and public interest with epidemiological evidence of health benefits in humans, in particular by conferring protection against heart diseases. Its anti-inflammatory properties have also been reported. Initial results from short-lived mouse strains showed that fish oil can increase lifespan, affecting pathways like inflammation and oxidation thought to be involved in the regulation of aging. Could fish oil and its omega-3 fatty acids act as geroprotectors? Probably not. A new study by Strong et al. challenges the role for fish oil supplementation in aging. Using a large cohort of genetically heterogeneous mice in three sites, part of the Interventions Testing Program of the NIA, Strong et al. show that fish oil supplementation at either low or high dosages has no effect on the lifespan of male or female mice. Although it is still possible that fish oil supplementation has health benefits for specific age-related diseases, it does not appear to slow aging or have longevity benefits

Correction by peptide bioregulators of micro- and ultramicroscopic changes in the pineal gland caused by stress under light deprivation

It has been established, that immobilizing stress causes decreasing of light cell's amount in pineal gland, which are the main source of melatonin production like under usual lighting and like under light deprivation. Light deprivation, that stimulates pineal gland function, also provides activation of pre-melatonin biosynthesis that increased production of endogenous melatonin

Oxidative stress enzymes and mitochondrial bioenergetics in wild Liza saliens exposed to heavy metals

The Esmoriz-Paramos coastal lagoon represents an ecosystem of great physical and ecological significance. However, as a result of industrial, agricultural and antropogenic activities this habitat has been progressively degrading over the last decades. The heavy metal contamination is an important factor to the decline of sediments quality and may adversely affect fish health. In the present work the leaping grey mullet Liza saliens was studied because it is the dominant endemic species in the lagoon. It is a filter feeder and also being a detritus-mud feeder, it is therefore exposed to contaminated sediments

Chiyu extract stimulates antioxidant defense ability in senescence-accelerated mice

    Get PDF
The effect of chiyu extract on antioxidant defense alteration in senescence-accelerated mice (SAM) was examined. Comparison with AKR/N Slc mice, a strain consistent with SAM but exhibiting normal aging, showed a lower glutathione (GSH) level and glutathione/glutathione disulfide (GSH/ GSSG) ratio in the kidney and liver of SAM, whereas malondialdehyde (MDA), a lipid peroxidation product, was increased significantly. Administration of chiyu extract increased the GSH level and GSH/ GSSG ratio, and markedly suppressed MDA production. On the other hand, detection of renal enzymes related to the glutathione redox cycle showed that catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities were largely decreased in SAM, whereas chiyu extract reversed this tendency. The reduced activities of hepatic catalase and glutathione reductase were increased significantly by the extract. These findings suggest that a decline of the antioxidant defense system occurs in SAM, and that chiyu extract may have a beneficial effect in ameliorating oxidative stress or damage.

Prevention of Protein Glycation by Natural Compounds

    Get PDF
Non-enzymatic protein glycosylation (glycation) contributes to many diseases and aging of organisms. It can be expected that inhibition of glycation may prolong the lifespan. The search for inhibitors of glycation, mainly using in vitro models, has identified natural compounds able to prevent glycation, especially polyphenols and other natural antioxidants. Extrapolation of results of in vitro studies on the in vivo situation is not straightforward due to differences in the conditions and mechanism of glycation, and bioavailability problems. Nevertheless, available data allow to postulate that enrichment of diet in natural anti-glycating agents may attenuate glycation and, in consequence, ageing
