Hemodynamics and Endothelial Cell Biology in Cardiovascular Diseases
Atherosclerotic plaques develop preferentially in curved and branching arteries in-vivo.
Lipids and inflammatory cells accumulation in the intimal layer of the arterial wall
is considered as the main driving mechanism in the disease progression. Evidences
suggest that this focal distribution of plaques may result from the combination of
systemic risk factors including high plasma cholesterol, smoking, diabetis, hypertension
or genetic pre-disposition and local hemodynamic risk factors such as low and
oscillatory flows. The exact mechanism of the biological and biomechanical
interactions between the endothelium, blood flow and the growing lesion underneath
still remains unclear.
This thesis is a study on the relationship between biomechanical factors found in proatherogenic
flow and endothelial inflammation. The thesis focuses in particular on the
effect of secondary flows on wall shear stress and mass transport distribution. To that
end, we have combined different techniques from flow imaging, 3D flow
reconstruction, vascular biology and mathematical simulation of biological network.
In particular, shear stress is involved in the regulation of the pro-inflammatory
transcription factor nuclear factor -kB (NF-kB) and the vasoregulator Nitric Oxide. The
role of endothelial Nitric Oxide and wall shear stress on NF-kB activation is still
controversial. We investigated here the hypothesis that NO negatively regulates NF-
kB activation in flow chamber with sheared endothelial cells and using a mathematical
model of the NF-kB-NO pathway.
Understanding the underlying relationship between hemodynamic factors and
inflammatory cells transport to the wall may contribute to the development of better
therapies or interventional practices to treat patients with atherosclerotic diseases

Realistic shell-model calculations for proton particle-neutron hole nuclei around 132Sn
We have performed shell-model calculations for nuclei with proton particles
and neutron holes around 132Sn using a realistic effective interaction derived
from the CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential. For the proton-neutron channel this
is explicitly done in the particle-hole formalism. The calculated results are
compared with the available experimental data, particular attention being
focused on the proton particle-neutron hole multiplets. A very good agreement
is obtained for all the four nuclei considered, 132Sb, 130Sb, 133Te and 131Sb.
We predict many low-energy states which have no experimental counterpart. This
may stimulate, and be helpful to, future experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, to be published on Physical Review
Correlation Functions in 2-Dimensional Integrable Quantum Field Theories
In this talk I discuss the form factor approach used to compute correlation
functions of integrable models in two dimensions. The Sinh-Gordon model is our
basic example. Using Watson's and the recursive equations satisfied by matrix
elements of local operators, I present the computation of the form factors of
the elementary field and the stress-energy tensor of
the theory.Comment: 19pp, LATEX version, (talk at Como Conference on ``Integrable Quantum

Surname studies with genetics
Genetic studies of surnames are briefly reviewed. In particular, such DNA studies can sometimes provide clues to a surname's meaning. A few surnames are being found to include unusually large single families, which are far more populous than computer simulations for monogamous families predict, suggesting that they might best be explained by their getting off to a fast start through polygyny or concubines: Brehon Law in Ireland and medieval Welsh Law were relatively accepting of polygyny. The Plant surname in the Welsh Marches largely comprises an abnormally large single family and this favours the Welsh meaning '[many] children', though various other meanings for this surname have been suggested. The surnames Meates, Meats, Mates, Mate and Myatt in north Staffordshire and Ireland belong to a single family and appear to have derived from the female forename Maiot
