    In eastern Nevada and western Utah is an extensive terrane that has experienced a complex tectonic history of Mesozoic deformation and superposed Tertiary extension. The Mesozoic tectonic history of this area has been the subject of controversy for the past twenty or more years. The debate has centered on whether major Mesozoic geologic structures were due to compressional or extensional tectonic regimes. The goal of our research was to decipher the deformational history of the area by combining detailed geologic mapping, remote sensing data analysis, and U-Pb and K-Ar geochronology. This study area includes the Dolly Varden Mountains and adjacent Currie Hills, located in the semi-arid environment of the northeastern Great Basin in Nevada. Vegetation cover in the Dolly Varden Mountains typically ranges from about 10 percent to 50 percent, with some places along drainages and on high, north-facing slopes where vegetation cover approaches 100 percent. Sagebrush is found at less vegetated lower elevations, whereas pinon pine and juniper are prevalent above 2,000 meters. A variety of geologic materials is exposed in the study area. A sequence of Late Paleozoic and Triassic sedimentary rocks includes limestone, dolomite, chert, sandstone, siltstone and shale. A two-phase granitic stock, called the Melrose, intruded these rocks, resulting in metamorphism along the intrusive contact. Tertiary volcanic rocks cover most of the eastern part of the Dolly Varden Mountains and low-lying areas in the Currie Hills

    The Enrich project was a 12 month JISC project funded as part of the Inf11 Programme (2009-11). It was conducted in partnership by the Library, Research and Enterprise and IT Services – with additional technical support from EPrints Services. This interdepartmental approach was critical to the success of the project and the repository’s long term sustainability as an institutional [not simply Library] service. At its heart, Enrich provided a clear focus for the integration and enhancement of the University of Glasgow’s repository, Enlighten with other institutional systems, including our Research System (for funder data) and our Data Vault (for staff records), lowering barriers to deposit and increasing the range of information held

    Development of durable “green” concrete exposed to deicing chemicals via synergistic use of locally available recycled materials and multi-scale modifiers

    From the economic and social perspectives, the use of waste materials would not be attractive until their costs and quality can satisfy the construction requirements. In this study, a pure fly ash paste (PFAP) was developed in place of ordinary Portland cement paste (OPCP). This PFAP was prepared at room temperature and without direct alkali activation. The samples were prepared using only the as-received class C coal fly ash, water, and a very small amount of borax (Na2B4O7). On average, the PFAP featured 28-d compressive strength of about 36 MPa, and micro-nano hardness and elastic modulus 29% and 5%, higher than the OPCP, respectively. These mechanical and other properties of the PFAP make it a viable “green” construction binder suitable for a host of structural and non-structural applications. Advanced characterization of the raw material and PFAP pastes was employed to elucidate the hydration mechanisms of this “green” binder. The obtained knowledge sheds light on the role of class C CFA in the hydration process and may benefit the expanded use of various CFAs in cementitious materials

    The Institute for Transport Studies (ITS), University of Leeds and the British Railways Board (BRB) carried out a major comparative study of Western European railways in the late 1970s (BRB and University of Leeds, 1979). Follow-up work was carried out by ITS financed by the Social Science Research Council and reported by Nash (1985). It was deaded to revive this work at ITS for a number of reasons: It is over ten years since the last set of comparisons (for 1981) were made at ITS and therefore a review of the changes in costs and productivity may be timely. There has been a number of technical developments that make the use of statistical cost analysis more promising. These developments include the use of more flexible functional forms such as the translog, and the development of comprehensive total factor productivity indices (see, for example, Dodgson, 1985 and, more recently, Hensher and Waters, 1993). There is increasing interest in the organisational structure of railway industries as a result of the 1988 Transport Act in Sweden, the EC directive 91/4-40 and the publication of proposals for privatising British Rail in July 1992 (see, for example, ECMT, 1993). Given the explosion in information technology, there were some hopes that data availability would have improved. (Continues..
